Cruella Dominates Nielsen Streaming Charts After Leaving Premier Access

Many of Disney’s live-action remakes based on the back catalogue of animated classics leave a lot to be desired, but Cruella actually managed to exceed expectations. An origin story for the 101 Dalmatians villain had lingered in development hell for a decade, with many people questioning why such a tale even needed to be told.

As it turned out, all the movie needed was two powerhouse performances from a pair of Academy Award winning actresses, a soundtrack full of instantly recognizable needle-drops, some jaw-dropping costume design and an attitude that was about as punk rock and anarchic as we could reasonably hope to expect from the Mouse House.

By any measurable metrics, Cruella was a huge success. Critics deemed it worthy of a 74% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences clearly enjoyed it a whole lot more, rating it a mighty 97%. It earned $233 million at the box office and brought in $20 million from Disney Plus Premier Access in through its opening weekend alone, so it’s little wonder we’re getting a sequel.

Since being removed from behind the paywall and added to the platform’s library, Cruella dominated the Nielsen movie charts for the week ending August 29th. Emma Stone’s scenery-devouring star vehicle was streamed for 815 million minutes, almost 300 million minutes ahead of Jason Momoa’s Netflix action thriller Sweet Girl in second.

Tom Hardy Shares New Poster Asking Fans Not To Spoil Venom: Let There Be Carnage

As if it wasn’t clear enough already, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is set to feature some huge reveals and revelations that could have a seismic impact on both Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The internet was buzzing about the symbiotic sequel’s credits scene without even knowing what it was, while Tom Hardy politely yet firmly asked the audience at a preview screening to refrain from giving the game away on social media. Let There Be Carnage finally comes to theaters on Friday, so if you don’t see if on opening day then you’re best staying off Twitter altogether if you want to avoid spoilers.

Continuing the theme, the leading man, producer and co-writer took to his Instagram account and posted a brand new poster specifically designed to encourage fans that their mouths are much better off kept shut, as you can see below.

Sony announced that tomorrow is Venom Day, so it’ll be interesting to see what the studio has in store for a celebration of all things Eddie Brock just four days before Let There Be Carnage hits the big screen. At least we can guarantee that it’ll be spoiler-free, with Hardy sending a message to his 7.3 million followers in no uncertain terms.

Vin Diesel Says Riddick 4 Is Closer Than We Think

Vin Diesel is nothing if not determined to keep the Riddick franchise alive by any means necessary, even if we’ve only managed to get three feature films out of the equation in the space of 21 years. That’s not a great return, but another outing for the intergalactic convict is always lingering at the back of his mind.

One of the tank top enthusiast’s favored habits is to continually talk up new projects, before failing to mention them again for the longest time. We saw it twice last year when he teased a sequel to The Last Witch Hunter and major Bloodshot news, and yet we’re still waiting to hear the latest updates.

Riddick 4 is in a very similar boat; Diesel said the script was complete in July 2019, and three months later he revealed shooting would begin the following year. When that didn’t happen, he claimed in May 2020 the screenplay was almost ready, and then didn’t offer anything else for a full year until dropping a tease this past June.

As you can see below, the action star is back at it again, revealing via Instagram that Riddick 4 is apparently much closer than we think.

Riddick

It’s been eight years since the last installment, and in that time the leading man has blown plenty of hot air without actually presenting anything tangible. Maybe this is the time Riddick 4 finally comes together, because Diesel will need another franchise to keep him busy once his Fast & Furious tenure draws to a close.

Daniel Craig Reveals He Almost Turned Down James Bond

The casting process for determining the next James Bond always generates plenty of headlines, even when there’s already somebody in the role. For years we’ve been hearing about potential successors to Daniel Craig, something that started from the second it was announced that No Time to Die would be his final outing as 007.

Once the Pierce Brosnan era drew to a close, the decision was made to rebuild Bond from the ground up and wipe the slate clean with a reboot, which made the choice of leading man one of the franchise’s most important ever. Hugh Jackman famously turned it down, while both established and future stars like Clive Owen, Sam Worthington, Dougray Scott, Ewan McGregor, Rupert Friend and Antony Starr were either considered or screen-tested.

At this stage, everyone knows that the final two came down to Craig and 22 year-old unknown Henry Cavill, with the former winning out after it was deemed the latter was a touch on the young side. However, Craig revealed in an interview during the BAFTA: Life in Pictures event that he considered declining the opportunity.

“I just said I can’t, I mean; I think you got the wrong guy. People used to say, ‘Oh you must have always wanted to be James Bond’. I went well, yeah, as a kid I kind of thought about it. I wanted to be Spider-Man as well, but I just thought it was never going to happen. I just realized I’ve been working with these people, some of them for nearly thirty years because there’s a lot of people I just worked with in the film industry. It’s just always about the team and you know, Barbara makes an atmosphere on set where we’re a family.”

It worked out very well for both parties in the end, though, with Craig steering James Bond to record box office figures and widespread enthusiasm from critics and fans. No Time to Die will be looking to send him out in a blaze of glory, and then the search begins anew.

Eternals Gets R-Rating In Russia For Featuring Same-Sex Relationship

Kevin Feige explained at great length why Deadpool 3 was the only one of the two dozen Marvel Cinematic Universe projects currently in development that would come burdened with an R-rating, but that doesn’t mean the rest of the franchise’s output can’t push the boundaries of PG-13 to the limit.

Anyone who knows anything about Moon Knight will be aware that Oscar Isaac’s solo series isn’t going to be all about sunshine and rainbows, while The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was slapped with the equivalent of an R-rating in many overseas territories. As per Metropolitan Media, Eternals has been deemed suitable only for audiences of 18 years or older in Russia, but there’s a rather troubling potential reason behind the decision.

The MPAA awarded the upcoming cosmic epic a PG-13 for “fantasy violence and action, some language and brief sexuality”, so why have the Russians determined that 17 year-old’s can’t see the movie? Unfortunately, it’s all to do with the LGBTQ+ representation in the story, with Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos the MCU’s first openly gay superhero.

The 18+ rating is given to content marked as “prohibited for children”, and the Power Rangers reboot was deemed worthy of the branding for the sole reason that it implied Becky Gomez’s Trini was gay. Russia enacts a law to protect youngsters from being exposed to queer themes or anything that contradicts ‘traditional’ family values, so they won’t be allowed to see Eternals for that reason.

Tom Holland Reportedly Wants $20 Million To Re-Sign As Spider-Man

Once Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters in December, Tom Holland will no longer be under contract to play the web-slinger for either Marvel Studios or Sony, even though he’s admitted that he’ll happily stick around for as long as he’s wanted.

The actor signed a six-picture deal when he first landed the role, allowing him to star in three solo movies and a trio of Marvel Cinematic Universe crossovers. Looking at the plans Sony have in store for their own shared mythology, which they recently rebranded with the superhero’s name front and center, Holland’s bargaining power is in a very strong position when he opens talks over a renewal.

After all, MCU fans would reject another recasting of the iconic character, and Sony have put all of their eggs in the Spider-Man basket. We’re now hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us Trevor Slattery was returning for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings long before it was confirmed – that Holland reportedly wants $20 million to re-up his deal, and you’d imagine he’ll probably get it.

$20 million for however many films plus profit participation points and box office milestones would make him a very wealthy young man indeed, a far cry from the relatively paltry $250,000 he received for Captain America: Civil War. That being said, his upfront Spider-Man salary jumped to an estimated $5 million for his most recent outings in Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame and No Way Home, so he’s hardly been working for pennies.

Iron Man Villains Reportedly Returning For Armor Wars

As you’d expect from a project that revolves around Stark Industries technology falling into the wrong hands, which forces his best friend into action to reclaim it and save the day, the shadow of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man is going to touch every corner of Disney Plus series Armor Wars.

Don Cheadle recently confirmed that shooting on the Marvel Cinematic Universe show isn’t going to start until next year, which means that there’s plenty of time and even more opportunity for the rumor mill to continue throwing all sorts of hypothetical characters, cameos and plot details into the mix.

Insider Daniel Richtman is the latest to weigh in, offering that several familiar foes from the Iron Man trilogy could make their presence felt in Armor Wars. That’s about the extent of the information made available, though, so it’s a little flimsy. That being said; there’s absolutely no reason why it wouldn’t become a reality.

Obadiah Stane may be dead, but his son Zeke has been touted for his MCU debut in Armor Wars, while Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings brought back Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery, and Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer is a name to have come up more than once. The only real issue is that focusing too heavily on the Tony Stark legacy would shift the spotlight away from Rhodey, so we shouldn’t expect the action-packed adventure to be a trip down Iron Man memory lane when there’s a standalone story to be told first and foremost.
