A Brie Larson Blockbuster Is Finding New Life On Streaming

For whatever reason, a cursory glance at the internet makes it clear that Brie Larson isn’t the most universally popular actress in the business. YouTube even changed its algorithm to combat the trolls who were downvoting Captain Marvel into oblivion as part of a sustained campaign against the Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster, which didn’t accomplish a thing in the long run when Carol Danvers’ origin story rocketed to over $1.1 billion at the box office.

The online perception of Larson is often directly at odds with her standing in the industry at large, where she’s regarded as one of the most accomplished talents of her generation. Having delivered a string of acclaimed performances, won an Academy Award, directed her first feature film and headlined a billion-dollar blockbuster all before she turned 30, she’s clearly doing more than a few things right.

Before boarding the MCU, Larson dipped her toes into the waters of big budget studio fare with the MonsterVerse’s Kong: Skull Island, which saw her supported by a stacked ensemble that also featured Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly and many others. A thinly-veiled Vietnam parable that just so happened to revolve around a gigantic ape, Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ prequel was an entertaining blast of effects-driven escapism.

As well as offering a companion piece to Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla that was completely different in terms of style, tone and aesthetic, a box office haul of $566 million established the MonsterVerse as a viable and lucrative shared mythology. Kong: Skull Island scored strong reviews from audiences and critics at the time, while it’s now rebounding on HBO Max to sit comfortably among the platform’s ten most-watched titles.

Ben Affleck Rumored To Be Done As Batman After The Flash

One of the biggest talking points surrounding The Flash has been the future of Ben Affleck’s Batman once the multiversal DCEU blockbuster fades to black. After all, the two-time Academy Award winner had already publicly retired from the role, before being enticed back by Zack Snyder’s Justice League reshoots and the Scarlet Speedster’s solo debut.

Ever since he was first confirmed to be suiting up again for director Andy Muschietti’s first foray outside the horror genre, the rumor mill has remained in a state of perpetual overdrive. The latest addition to the systematic succession of scuttlebutt claims that Affleck is “officially” finished as the Dark Knight once The Flash hits theaters in November of next year.

Of course, slapping the world ‘official’ onto something we’ve heard at least a dozen times before without offering any concrete evidence or proof to back it up is a bit of a contradiction, which also means that it remains entirely speculative in nature. While there’s every chance The Flash marks the end of the line for Zack Snyder’s Caped Crusader, we’ve also heard just as many conflicting reports intimating that Affleck is poised to stick around for any number of future projects.

As it stands, then, we’ll call this one a 50/50 shot, which is the best odds you’ll find until Affleck makes his intentions clear by the words that come directly out of his mouth. The fans would love for him to stay on, and it’d be a crying shame if his tenure as Batman ended without his own standalone adventure, but as has always been the case, we simply don’t know with any degree of unflinching certainty what’s in store for him after The Flash.

WB And Legendary Reportedly Developing MonsterVerse Prequels

Had Godzilla vs. Kong disappointed at the box office, then there was every chance Warner Bros. would have pulled the plug on the MonsterVerse. King of the Monsters had disappointed at the box office and fallen flat with critics, while the extensive reshoots and poor test screenings had many folks predicting the worst for Adam Wingard’s supersized smackdown.

In the end, Godzilla vs. Kong comfortably out-earned its predecessor despite having the effects of the pandemic to content with, and a $467 million haul makes it the second highest-grossing Hollywood blockbuster released since the end of 2019. On top of that, a 75% Rotten Tomatoes score puts it roughly on a par with Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island, so it was a major return to form for the franchise.

Wingard recently entered talks to helm the next chapter in the MonsterVerse, but we’re hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us HBO Max were inviting pitches for TV shows set in the Harry Potter universe long before it was confirmed – that Warner Bros. and Legendary are also considering prequels set in the distant past.

The next kaiju spectacular has been heavily speculated to be an updated Son of Kong, and while Skull Island was a prequel, diving thousands of years into human history would be a fascinating idea. Imagine an effects-driven MonsterVerse epic unfolding during the earliest days of the Titans emerging from the Hollow Earth to establish dominance, which could potentially pit them against the ancient Romans, Greeks, Mayans, Egyptians, Vikings or even goddamn dinosaurs. It’d be a fresh spin on the concept, and an awesome one to boot.

Elizabeth Olsen Reportedly Pushing For Scarlet Witch Solo Movie

Not to sound too harsh, but Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff probably wasn’t a lot of people’s favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe character until WandaVision began airing on Disney Plus this past January.

The actress was first announced to have boarded the franchise in November 2013, but it took seven years for her to land a role worthy of her talents, which yielded universal critical and audience acclaim, not to mention that Emmy nomination fans had been clamoring for.

Olsen initially only signed on for two movies and a single cameo appearance, but she’s since re-upped her contract several times to carry her through to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. What the future holds for Scarlet Witch after that hasn’t been made public as of yet, but we’re hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us War Machine was getting his own streaming series long before Armor Wars was announced – that the actress reportedly wants her own solo movie.

As the MCU’s most powerful figure that’s able to traverse the multiverse at will, Wanda is clearly being set up as arguably the single largest driving force behind the first wave of Phase Four projects. If WandaVision isn’t returning for Season 2, and the fractured timelines are still in tatters by the end of the Sorcerer Supreme’s sequel, a standalone Scarlet Witch outing tying up all of the narrative loose ends is a no-brainer on paper, and let’s not forget her comic book connections to a certain team of mutants, either.
