Vin Diesel Reportedly Blocked Dwayne Johnson’s Fast & Furious Return

Now that Fast & Furious 10 has been given an official release date of April 7th, 2023, audiences can start preparing themselves for the beginning of the end. There are only two movies left in the bombastic action franchise, drawing the sprawling story that kicked off 20 years ago to what promises to be an epic and suitably ludicrous conclusion.

Director Justin Lin will be pulling out all of the stops to ensure that he sends The Fast Saga out in fitting fashion, which is no tough task when you consider that the ninth installment sent the gang into space and doubled down on flipping the bird to the rules of physics, gravity and logic. He’ll also have to do it without one major fan favorite after Dwayne Johnson confirmed that his time rubbing shoulders with Dominic Toretto and the family is over.

A Hobbs & Shaw sequel remains in development, though, but Johnson clearly isn’t interested in returning to the main drag. Reading between the lines and hearing his comments during the Jungle Cruise press tour it’s easy to ascertain why, and we’re hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us Han would return in F9 long before it was confirmed – that Vin Diesel was never particularly keen on The Rock being welcomed back into the fold anyway.

Diesel finally got the elusive p.g.a. addendum he’d been chasing for a decade on F9, so the Producers Guild of America clearly determined that his contributions to the development and execution of the movie were substantial. More power behind the scenes tends to lead to greater influence, so it wouldn’t be a shock to discover that the leading man was determined to make sure his arch-nemesis sat on the sidelines for the final two chapters.

Of course, there’s no guarantees that Johnson would have even entertained the idea of playing a part in Fast & Furious 10 and 11, but you’d have to imagine Universal at least tried to nudge things in that direction.

Ryan Reynolds Reportedly Wants Deadpool To Cameo In Other Disney Projects

Disney owns some of the biggest brands in the industry, a list that includes the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Pixar, Walt Disney Animation, Alien, Predator, Die Hard and dozens upon dozens more. Many of those aforementioned properties are known for their crossovers, but so far the Mouse House has preferred to keep things separate.

Ralph Breaks the Internet was a notable exception that featured all sorts of pop culture references and surprise cameos, while there’s countless theories out there that offer detailed analysis on why every single Pixar movie exists in the same narrative space. Easter Eggs are one thing, but full-blown crossovers are an entirely different beast that are very difficult to get approval for, as the team behind Marvel’s What If…? discovered when they pitched Luke Skywalker and the Rocketeer showing up in the MCU’s animated series.

Ryan Reynolds revealed that he’s already been shot down after proposing a short film that would’ve seen Deadpool interview the hunter who shot Bambi’s mother, but we’re hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us Riri Williams would debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever long before it was confirmed – that the actor isn’t planning on giving up the ghost quite yet.

While there’s every chance Disney are just going to keep saying no, it’d be hilarious if any feature films or streaming exclusives featured something as simple yet obvious of Deadpool hiding in the background of a single frame. Looking at how the company treats IP, it’s a long shot to say the least, but it’s also not completely outside the realms of believability.

Sweet Girl Star Wants A Sequel To The Netflix Smash Hit

Looking at how Netflix operates, there was really no other outcome than Sweet Girl rocketing right to the top of the streaming service’s most-watched list. It’s a brand new in-house action thriller with a high concept premise and a proven star in the lead role, which is exactly the sort of criteria that guarantees success on the platform.

The early viewership numbers may have been strong, but the reviews most definitely were not. Sweet Girl holds a weak Rotten Tomatoes score of just 20%, with the movie being heavily criticized for its formulaic plotting, cliched set pieces and poorly-edited action sequences. There is an interesting and unexpected twist late on that takes the third act in a completely different direction that you’d expect, but for the most part it’s standard B-tier genre fare with A-list production values.

However, that hasn’t stopped star Isabela Merced from voicing her desire to return for a sequel. Seeing the actress who played the title character in the Dora the Explorer movie kicking all sorts of ass is pretty jarring at first, but the 20 year-old acquits herself very well. In a new interview, she could barely hide her enthusiasm when asked about her interest in Sweet Girl 2.

“I’m playing empowered characters only. It was so much fun because they got to do a lot of the action scenes and I’ve always loved action movies. This stunt team in particular, they’re called 87eleven and they worked on some of my favorite action movies of all times. So I really felt like, ‘Oh my God, I’m Charlize. Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde‘. Like this is actually happening. It was amazing. I can’t wait. Like maybe there’s going to be a sequel, hopefully there’s time for more action. But like I really hope it’s soon and with the same stunt team, because they were just absolutely amazing and made everything so much fun. I haven’t had so much fun doing my own stunts ever.”

The performances and dynamic between Merced’s Rachel Cooper and Jason Momoa as her father Ray are undoubtedly Sweet Girl‘s strongest suit, with a rote narrative finding itself powered by an unconventional family field trip. It’ll be interesting to see what the four-week figures are, because Netflix could well end up giving the green light to a second installment should fans check out Brian Andrew Mendoza’s feature directorial debut in their droves.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Trailer Reignites Mephisto Speculation

It’s already becoming a running joke among Marvel Cinematic Universe fans to blame Mephisto for everything that’s going on in Phase Four, which all came from months of rumors claiming that the villain would be revealed as the one responsible for manipulating reality around Scarlet Witch in WandaVision.

That thread continued right up until Agatha Harkness was unveiled as the show’s big bad, before the creative team behind Loki went out of their way to guarantee that Mephisto wouldn’t be involved in the Asgardian trickster’s solo series after an early promo stoked the fires once again.

Of course, you can’t keep the devil himself down for too long, and yesterday’s debut of the long-awaited Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer has dredged up the Mephisto chatter yet again. Based on the footage, the web-slinging threequel looks to be loosely inspired by the One More Day arc, where Peter Parker makes a deal with Mephisto to save Aunt May’s life by sacrificing his marriage to Mary Jane, who in turn convinces the baddie to have everyone forget Spidey’s true identity.

Inside the Sanctum Santorum we see Doctor Strange’s headquarters covered in snow and ice. In Dante’s Inferno, the Ninth Circle of the Hell where the devil resides is covered entirely in ice, and in several shots the Sorcerer Supreme is seen without his Cloak of Levitation, indicating that he might be an imposter. It’s a hell of a stretch, but Spider-Man: No Way Home ties directly into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, meaning that nothing can be taken off the table until we know for sure which direction the plot of the former is headed.

Netflix Reportedly Planning The Legend Of Zelda Animated Movie

There have long been rumors that Nintendo and Netflix are collaborating on a The Legend of Zelda project. The exact form it’ll take has been a bit unclear, but a movie and a TV show have reportedly both been discussed. Now, we’re hearing that those options may have been narrowed down, with Netflix opting for an animated movie adapting the beloved video game franchise.

Adapting Zelda for a movie is a tricky proposition. On one hand, the jaw-dropping scenery, epic battles against gigantic monsters, and fantasy action aesthetic should translate easily to a film. On the other, the series prioritizes gameplay over story, to the point where—35 years on from the NES original—series hero Link is still a mute protagonist.

That’s inevitably going to change if Netflix moves forward, and we’ve heard the streaming giant is eyeing Tom Holland to play Link. He’d be a great fit for the part. As long as the team doesn’t do what it did last time Link was voiced, the idea should be fine.

Zelda-TV-SHOW

What will be particularly interesting for Nintendo fans is what era of Zelda this will be set in and whether this movie fits into the canon. The Zelda timeline spans thousands of years and features several split timelines; it currently begins with Skyward Sword and ends with the post-apocalyptic Nintendo Switch hit, Breath of the Wild.

The most fan-pleasing move would be to adapt the classic 1998 N64 game Ocarina of Time, but I’d like to see them go somewhere new and use the movie to tell a story that wouldn’t work as a video game.

Another fly in the ointment is that Netflix is apparently set to make its own move into the video game market. This means the company might end up as business a rival to Nintendo, which could make a Zelda property on Netflix a dicey prospect for the famously cautious gaming giant. But, for now, we can just speculate.

Let’s hope we get an official The Legend of Zelda Netflix confirmation soon.
