Chris Pine Breaks Down His Emotionally Powerful Wonder Woman 1984 Scene

When it was announced that Chris Pine would be returning for Wonder Woman 1984, there was a mix of confusion and excitement from fans. The actor had been one of the first movie’s undoubted highlights, but not only was Steve Trevor killed off in the third act as he made a heroic sacrifice play, but even if they’d retconned it to have him survive then he’d be 66 years older, and Star Trek‘s Captain Kirk is far too handsome to be slathered in old age makeup.

However, after the blockbuster sequel was released on HBO Max and into theaters on Christmas Day, a lot of people wished the creative team had come up with something much better and a whole lot less creepy. Having wished for Steve to return via the Dreamstone, Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince gets a shock when the love of her life turns up but has inhabited another man’s body.

Once the initial surprise of seeing a dead World War I pilot assume the physical form of a random dude wears off, Diana does what anyone would do in the same circumstances by immediately brushing off the fact that Steve’s hijacked someone else’s life, presumably sent their consciousness off to purgatory and commandeered their flesh by having sex with him.

The plot point has generated more than a little backlash, but despite the questionable setup, it does yield one of Wonder Woman 1984‘s most emotionally powerful moments when Steve convinces Diana that finally letting him go is the right thing to do, and in a recent interview, Pine admitted that it was a difficult scene to shoot.

“We shot that off of Pennsylvania Avenue. We shot that that day when we did part of that huge, week-long sequence running down Pennsylvania Avenue, and her running down and then her lassoing up. We did it in stages, and we went behind this pillar and did the scene. It’s a really hard scene to do, especially when there’s a lot of other action and stuff to do in the rest of the day, and certainly really emotional for her. And Patty’s just very good about making sure we have the space to really figure out the scene and make it authentic, and then really pushing us as actors to get there, and not accepting anything less than absolute truth. It really was a credit to Gal for being so emotionally open and Patty for being such a stickler.”

Two great performances from the stars in the moment along with the sense of loss and pain marked against Diana’s desire to do the right thing give the scene plenty of impact, it’s just a shame we had to get their by such bizarre means in the first place.

Mulan Sequel And Spinoffs Reportedly In The Works

2020 was a wild ride to say the least, and at the start of last year, nobody could have predicted that Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan would have turned out to be one of the most controversial movies released. Admittedly, the seeds of discontent had been sown when calls were made to boycott the blockbuster after star Yiu Lifei publicly endorsed the Hong Kong police, but it ended up coming close to starting an international incident.

The studio had already gone out of their way to appease the Chinese censors, removing beloved dragon sidekick Mushu entirely so as not to offend local audiences and cutting something as innocuous as a kissing scene in order to please the strict censorship board, but thanking the Xinjiang province in the credits turned out to be a massive mistake in hindsight, with the region in the midst of facing allegations of human rights violations.

State media banned all coverage of Mulan to try and stifle the discontent and Mouse House CEO Bob Chapek was called out by a U.S. Senator, only for the martial arts epic to bomb at the Chinese box office anyway, and it topped out at a soft $70 million globally, although Disney Plus Premier Access sales are widely believed to have brought in a huge amount of revenue.

The ending of Mulan seemed to leave the door wide open for sequels as well, but given the backlash and poor commercial performance, it appeared unlikely to happen. However, insider Daniel Richtman now claims that a feature film follow-up and several spinoffs exclusively for streaming are in the works. Of course, this has yet to be corroborated by Disney themselves, and the family-friendly company will no doubt be keeping their cards close to the chest until the furor has blown over before planning their next move. But Richtman has a strong track record for inside intel and as of now, there’s no reason to doubt him.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness Is Reportedly A Straight Up Horror Movie

One of Marvel Studios’ most famous tricks is trying to convince people that each of their movies operate in a unique genre setting, when in reality the vast majority of them simply tend to slap a different coat of paint on the same familiar plot, story and character beats, but they boast just about enough individuality and plenty of entertainment value, so audiences let it slide.

If you’re looking for a hero with daddy issues then you’ve got Tony Stark, Thor, Loki, Star-Lord, Gamora, Nebula, Wasp and more to choose from. Fancy a comic book blockbuster where the good guy faces off against an evil mirror version of themselves? Then check out the entire Iron Man trilogy, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man or Black Panther to name but a few.

The point is, the formula has proven so successful that there’s very little need to deviate from it too heavily, with all 23 installments to date also featuring the requisite amount of witty comebacks and snappy quips. However, insider Daniel Richtman claims that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be veering into full-blown horror territory, or at least as far as you can push it in a PG-13 family friendly franchise like the MCU.

Sam Raimi’s background in horror would certainly make him the ideal candidate, and he directed one of the genre’s best ever PG-13 efforts in Drag Me to Hell, but it remains to be seen how far Kevin Feige would be willing to push those particular boundaries, especially with young children making up such a huge part of the fanbase.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will no doubt have its fair share of freaky moments, but it probably won’t stretch the limits of the rating as far as something like A Quiet Place, Lights Out or Insidious did, all of which were PG-13.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Reportedly Returning For New Kindergarten Cop Movie

If you don’t count the Terminator franchise based on the loophole that he’s technically a different version of the Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 in each of the five movies he’s appeared in, then outside of his winking self-referential cameos as Trench in the Expendables series, Conan the Barbarian is the only character Arnold Schwarzenegger has played more than once.

That’s not from a lack of trying, though, with countless failed attempts made at sequelizing his biggest hits over the years, including the fabled King Conan. The action icon has turned down every Predator movie that’s been produced since the 1987 original, True Lies 2 fell through when James Cameron decided to focus his efforts on painstakingly leading the technological advancement of cinema instead, potential follow-ups for Commando and Total Recall were also nixed, and Eddie Murphy joining Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito in Triplets never made it out of development hell.

Kindergarten Cop

However, insider Daniel Richtman is now claiming that Arnie is returning as John Kimble for a Kindergarten Cop sequel, which would presumably gloss over the fact that we already got one, with Dolph Lundgren stepping in for the dire 2016 VOD effort. No further details are offered, but the former Governor of California recently made a surprise appearance in an online reunion featuring the child stars of the movie, which was organized to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the smash hit family comedy.

The nostalgia factor would no doubt be more than enough to power another Kindergarten Cop to box office success, but the formula would need freshening up. Schwarzenegger is 73 years old now, so maybe they could turn the tables and have him and a bunch of unruly retirement home residents running amok until someone shows up and whips them into shape.

Jared Leto Reportedly Wants Zack Snyder To Direct Joker Solo Movie

The Snyder Cut of Justice League is guaranteed to be a massive success when it hits HBO Max in March based entirely on the huge built-in audience who have been patiently waiting for years to see the director’s original vision for the DCEU epic. However, there are question marks over how interested more casual viewers who haven’t been tracking the project’s tortured development will be.

After all, you’d imagine more than a few people would balk at the idea of sitting through a four-hour version of a movie that was panned by critics and bombed at the box office the first time around, especially when Snyder as a filmmaker tends to divide opinion. His signature aesthetic and visual flourishes excite and irritate in equal measure, and then there’s his penchant for overindulgence.

There’s a reason why the extended editions of Watchmen, Sucker Punch and Batman V Superman are all vastly superior to the theatrical releases, because Snyder struggles to rein in his impulses with the studio looking over his shoulder. However, one constant throughout his career is that his actors always speak very highly of him.

Jared Leto only boarded Justice League for the reshoots and won’t appear in the Snyder Cut for more than a couple of minutes, but insider Daniel Richtman now claims that the Academy Award winner wants the 54 year-old to helm a solo Joker movie. Of course, such a project hasn’t been announced yet and Leto isn’t committed to anything despite the huge amount of rumors and speculation sweeping the internet, but you’d imagine that he signed a multi-picture contract when he boarded the DCEU for Suicide Squad.

Most of these deals tend to be for three movies, too, so theoretically after Justice League there could be one left, and Warner Bros. might look to capitalize if his Joker gets a much better reception the second time around.

8 New Movies Hit VOD This Weekend, Including Liam Neeson’s Latest Thriller

Every Friday brings the weekly slate of new arrivals on VOD, but pickings are pretty slim today. Obviously, it’s the first day of 2021 and there are going to be an awful lot of sore heads around the world from the celebrations, as muted as they were legally mandated to be. But the biggest titles have been hitting the various streaming services on offer, and nobody wants to release their movie when the majority of audiences are otherwise occupied.

Indeed, the surprisingly polarizing Wonder Woman 1984, Pixar’s latest emotional roller coaster Soul, Robert Rodriguez’s hugely popular family friendly superhero film We Can Be Heroes and season 3 of Cobra Kai will be dominating the conversation for the foreseeable future, and as a result, there are only eight debutants on VOD this weekend.

The biggest of the bunch is the latest in the long line of Liam Neeson action thrillers, with Honest Thief boasting the unique premise of a career criminal who’s desperate to turn himself in but ends up being framed for a murder he didn’t commit. The workmanlike effort doesn’t break any new ground, but should be appealing enough to fans of the veteran star, and you can check out the full list of newbies below.

  • A Mind Like Still Water
  • Shadow in the Cloud
  • Honest Thief
  • The Last Shift
  • Two Ways Home
  • The One You Feed
  • Lowdown Dirty Criminals
  • Zombie Bro

Honest Thief

If Liam Neeson doesn’t float your boat, then Chloe Grace Moretz headlines what’s easily the most bizarre new movie of the week in Shadow in the Cloud, with the 23 year-old playing a World War II pilot on a top secret mission who ends up forced to deal with a mischievous gremlin trying to sabotage her aircraft in a wild genre mashup co-written by Hollywood exile Max Landis. Like we said, slim pickings this week, but you never know, there might be something that tickles your fancy.
