Portland passes strongest facial recognition ban in the US

The Portland City Council has passed the toughest facial recognition ban in the US, blocking both public and private use of the technology. Other cities such as Boston, San Francisco, and Oakland have passed laws barring public institutions from using facial recognition, but Portland is the first to prohibit private use. The ban passed unanimously, according to CNET, CNN, and OneZero.

The new law is actually established as two ordinances. The one prohibiting public use of facial recognition (PDF here) is now in effect, and city bureaus must complete an assessment of their facial recognition usage within 90 days. The ordinance prohibiting private use (PDF here) takes effect on January 1st, 2021.

The Walking Dead Movie Starring Rick Grimes Is Still On The Way

The recent announcement that The Walking Dead‘s upcoming eleventh season will be its last was quickly followed by a reminder that the series is still planned to continue on the big screen. Yes, AMC confirmed that they’re still developing the long-awaited movie starring Andrew Lincoln back in his role as Rick Grimes in collaboration with Universal and Skybound.

It’s the first bit of good news fans have had in a while, as the film seems to be experiencing a harsh development process given that no official photos or trailer footage have been released in the two years since its announcement. Rumors have meanwhile spread about issues happening behind the scenes. The script, in particular, has reportedly been rewritten numerous times due to AMC and Lincoln himself being unsatisfied with previous drafts.

Unfortunately, the company neglected to confirm a release date for the film, which is probably the right move considering the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic and how it can affect production. The Walking Dead’s tenth season finale was delayed from April 12th to October 4th, for example.

Now, the finale comes one week after the season 6 premiere of Fear The Walking Dead and will be followed by a new spinoff show – The Walking Dead: World Beyond – which was also delayed from April 12th in response to the pandemic. Meanwhile, ten more episodes of season 10 will be produced starting in October and are set to air in early 2021, around the start of season 11’s production.

With so many irons in the fire, it seems like we’ll probably be waiting a few more years for The Walking Dead movie. But at the very least, we can rest easy in the knowledge that it is indeed happening.

First Look At Mel Gibson As Santa Claus In Dark Christmas Comedy Fatman

Mel Gibson has slowly been mounting a comeback over the last few years, although at this point, his best chance of regaining his former status as one of the biggest stars in the business is a lot more likely to happen on the other side of the camera.

As a director, Gibson has lost none of his visual or storytelling prowess, as evidenced by his last effort Hacksaw Ridge earning $180 million at the box office and picking up six Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and Best Director, where it walked away with wins for Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing.

As an actor, the 64 year-old has struggled to gain any real momentum lately and has largely been relegated to supporting roles in forgettable genre fare or headlining the occasional hidden gem like Get the Gringo or Blood Father. Lethal Weapon 5 has the potential to deliver Gibson’s biggest hit in a long time if the fifth installment in the franchise ever ends up happening, but he’ll next be seen taking a most unexpected role when he appears as Santa Claus in upcoming dark comedy Fatman.

In what sounds like a much more sinister spin on Netflix’s The Christmas Chronicles with Kurt Russell, Fatman will see a 12 year-old kid hire a hitman to kill jolly old Saint Nick after getting a lump of coal in his stocking. The always reliable Walton Goggins plays the contract killer in what’s shaping up to be a unique take on the standard tropes of the Christmas movie, and you can check out the first image of Gibson as Santa Claus below.

Saban Films recently acquired the distribution rights, although there’s no word yet if it will be released in theaters or head straight to streaming. Based on the concept alone, however, we at least know that Fatman should be arriving before the end of the year.

A Surprising Horror Sequel Is Dominating Netflix Today

The extended Conjuring universe is arguably the biggest brand in horror right now, with the succession of sequels and spinoffs bringing in huge box office numbers and so far largely avoiding the law of diminishing returns that plagues the majority of the genre’s other long-running brands.

To date, the seven installments have raked in over $1.9 billion at the box office on combined production costs of less than $140 million, which also makes it one of the most profitable enterprises in the entire industry. And when The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It arrives next year after being delayed, takings are guaranteed to soar past the two billion dollar mark.

The first spinoff out of the gate was Annabelle, putting The Conjuring‘s creepy doll front and center. It may have earned $172 million globally, but the critical reaction was less than enthusiastic. As a result, journeyman director John R. Leonetti wasn’t invited back for sequel Annabelle: Creation, with rising star David F. Sandberg taking his place instead.

Sandberg had broken out in a big way with his feature debut Lights Out and reinforced his credentials as one of horror’s best up-and-coming talents after helming the Annabelle follow-up, which made more money than its predecessor at the box office and scored the best reviews that the franchise had seen outside of the first two Conjuring movies.

Still, as a film that’s already several years old, it’s a bit surprising to find out that Annabelle: Creation is proving to be a huge hit on Netflix today, where it currently ranks as the ninth most-watched pic on the streaming service on the global charts. What its sudden popularity can be attributed to, that we don’t know, but it just goes to show that subscribers will always want to be scared out of their seats no matter how comfortable they are.
