Avengers: Infinity War Almost Had War Machine Sliced In Half

Marvel just loves beating up War Machine. In the recently released art book, Avengers: Endgame – The Art of the Movie, concept artist Phil Saunders reveals that there were alternate plans for the character in Avengers: Infinity War.

Played by Don Cheadle, James Rhodes was set to appear in the Edinburgh battle. The scene features Scarlet Witch and Vision battling Thanos’ Black Order, before Captain America, Black Widow and Falcon rescue the pair. But another version includes War Machine who while fighting the Black Order, is sliced in half.

The book is filled with artwork not seen in the movies and Saunders spoke about the War Machine scene in Infinity War, explaining it as so:

“He was going to be sliced in half by one of the Black Order, and we were going to be shocked until we cut to the scene where he is remotely piloting it. The idea was that he was going to have PTSD from his crash, and so he wasn’t willing to get back in his suit — but he was able to use his prosthetics, attached to this gyroscopic robotic thing, to control the suit remotely.”

It sounds like a great idea on paper. It’s also an interesting angle to the character and would mirror the same conflict Tony Stark endured in Iron Man 3. But if you remember that Edinburgh scene like I do, it’s most remembered as Captain America’s reintroduction. Cap catches the spear and emerges from the shadows while that iconic score kicks in. It’s a great moment from the film and drew applause every time I saw it in the theater.

The energy would disappear once War Machine is cut in two. Not to mention that Saunders believes the similarity with Iron Man 3 and Stark also piloting an unmanned suit made it seem unoriginal.

In any case, following Captain America: Civil War, Kevin Feige and company seemed to abandon War Machine’s storyline entirely. He exists only to support Stark. If there was a character I was sure would have died in Endgame, it would’ve been him. He’s been around long enough for fans to care about but not essential enough to keep in play.. Alas, he was spared a violent fake death and this is why we have editors for movies, right?

Doctor Doom Rumored To Be One Of Black Panther 2’s Villains

Now that Marvel Studios has the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four mythologies back from Fox, it’s assumed it’ll be a priority for them to get Doctor Doom into the MCU ASAP. As one of the biggest supervillains in the Marvel universe, he could make a lot of noise in the franchise. But for the same reason, he could also make his first appearance in many different ways and a new rumor points to him featuring in a movie we hadn’t thought of before: Black Panther 2. 

Charles Murphy has reported that it’s possible Victor Von Doom could serve as the antagonist of the upcoming sequel for Chadwick Boseman’s King T’Challa. His info points to Doom looking to expand his empire by invading parts of Africa, which will ultimately put him at odds with Black Panther when he attempts to conquer Wakanda. Murphy stresses, however, that though this comes from a reliable source, he hasn’t been able to verify it via a second source yet so he’s counting it a rumor for now. We should also mention that while our own sources can’t confirm this either, they do note that if Doom does indeed show up, he wouldn’t be the only antagonist, as Namor is still expected to be one of the film’s villains.

What’s also interesting though is that Murphy notes that the main inspiration for BP2 will likely be Black Panther: Doomwar, the comic book event in which Doom tried to take over Wakanda in order to get at its supply of Vibranium, particularly for its mystical properties. Though the comics storyline features crossovers with the X-Men and Deadpool, Murphy speculates that Marvel would streamline it in order to keep the focus on T’Challa and his allies.

Still, it’s worth wondering whether the Fantastic Four would show up in the film, considering their deep connection to Doom. Black Panther also debuted in an FF comic on the page, so it would be neat to invert that for the MCU. Murphy makes a good point that Marvel will probably want to keep the plot from getting too crowded, but a supporting role or cameo could go a long way. Again, though, this is just a rumor at this stage and will remain as such until we learn a bit more about what Marvel has planned for Black Panther 2.

DC Fans Outraged After Superman Labelled As Not Relevant

When you think of classic superheroes, chances are many of you will immediately think of Superman. He is, after all, considered the first real hero and has become the poster child for justice and righteousness in popular culture. With that in mind, it should surprise no one that fans of the Man of Steel have expressed their outrage after the Big Blue Boy Scout was recently labelled as no longer relevant.

A tweet by Variety this week sparked the controversy, in which they talk about Warner Bros.’ lack of clarity when it comes to the original flying hero, saying discussions have been underway to try and make him relevant again.

One thing you don’t want to do is piss off an entire fanbase in one go and folks definitely weren’t happy about this, immediately taking to the social media site to express their feelings. Many wasted no time in telling Variety what they thought, making their voices heard about how much Superman is, in fact, still a relevant hero in this day and age.

For fans of Superman, his being an immigrant makes him just as relevant today as when he first appeared in the comics, maybe even more so. We’re not going to go down the political route here, but it seems the modern climate we’re currently living in makes the Man of Steel extremely pertinent to our culture.

While the initial tweet has caused a lot of outrage, it’s important to remember that Superman media is still being produced to this day, with rumors that J.J. Abrams is contemplating taking on the next cinematic project. Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but given that the Man of Steel has influenced just about every other comic book hero that’s come along since, it’s hardly surprising that fans are ticked off about this.

Disney Treating Avengers: Endgame As A Serious Awards Movie For Oscar Campaign

We’ve known for a while now that Disney was set to position Avengers: Endgame as a serious awards contender, which is hardly surprising given that the culmination of Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga dominated the cultural conversation for months, as well as becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time.

The Mouse House have put Endgame forward for virtually every major category at the Academy Awards, and while the general consensus is that the Russo brothers’ superhero epic doesn’t have much chance of landing any of the marquee prizes, the sense of scale and technical prowess on display throughout the lengthy running time make it a shoo-in for many of the so-called ‘minor’ prizes like Best Visual Effects, Production Design, Costume Design, Sound Mixing and others.

That being said, Disney and Marvel have put some of Endgame’s massive ensemble forward to be considered for acting gongs, most notably Robert Downey Jr., with the actor’s initial omission from the ‘For Your Consideration’ ballot generating some backlash from fans. No offense to Don Cheadle, Brie Larson, Gwyneth Paltrow or Paul Rudd, but there’s no chance that they’ve got a shot at the Supporting Actor/Actress categories, despite being named on Disney’s shortlist.

Of course, superhero movies generally don’t get much love from the Oscars, with Black Panther becoming the first entry in the genre to ever be nominated for Best Picture, and based on how Disney are marketing the screeners for Endgame, the studio are trying their best to hide the fact that it’s even part of the genre, which you can see below.

Avengers: Endgame is many things, but a serious awards movie it is not. Pretty much everyone on the planet is aware of the movie, and sending out screeners labeled with a generic font and somber black-and-white picture of Robert Downey Jr. isn’t exactly going to convince people that it fits the mold of the usual Oscar-bait fare that hits theaters around this time every year.

You have to give Marvel some credit for trying to hide the genre as best they can, but a movie about a group of costumed superheroes using time travel to save the universe from a CGI purple alien warlord surely won’t be troubling the Oscar frontrunners like The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood when the nominations are officially announced.
