Avengers: Endgame Writers Reveal Deleted Smart Hulk Scene

Few films need as little introduction as Avengers: Endgame, Marvel’s final, all conquering fantasy-crossover extravaganza, and there are few facets to it that superfans haven’t already micro-analyzed into oblivion. Props then to Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely for dropping some morsels of information that fans won’t have heard – alternate story ideas that ultimately went unused, but will no doubt be intriguing for aficionados of the franchise.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Markus and McFeely shone some light on concepts for Endgame and its predecessor Avengers: Infinity War that never made it to production:

Markus : “There was a sequence in [Infinity War] where they went into the places in the Doctor Strange universe called the Mindscape and everyone faces themselves. It was great but had absolutely nothing to do with anything.

When asked how that sequence played out, McFeely elaborated:

McFeely: The Hulk refuses to come out, if you remember, and [in the discarded storyline] they eventually came to a realization or a compromise and he busted out of the Iron Man suit and beats the heck out of this [monster]. That whole Third Act is a march toward losing, and this Hulk scene is a big win, right? It’s a guy solving his problem and being a funny character because now, he’s eloquent. We had to, at the last second, scrap all that, put aside all these scenes that used to have Smart Hulk and then re-shoot the First Act of Endgame, going to Thanos’ country lodge, that used to have the Smart Hulk.

Markus: “We wanted everybody to have this enormous journey in the five year jump [after the Thanos snap], and to really see, in sometimes shocking ways, how the loss had affected them. We hadn’t given Banner [a change] because we had transformed him earlier, and he had nowhere to go. And suddenly by needing to take it out of the first movie, it was the perfect thing.”

Storyboards for these films – epics of preposterous proportions – likely look as sprawling as the finished article, and one can envisage that these fragments barely scratch the surface of potential story destinations they floated. Even without them, Avengers: Endgame clocked in at over 3 hours, perhaps suggesting even firmer editorial supervision was required (Infinity War was a comparatively lean 149 minutes).

As for the ultimate fate of these never-to-be-filmed scenarios? They’ve been consigned to an alternate dimension of an altogether different kind. Fitting, don’t you think?

Doctor Sleep Director Has A Pitch For A New Nightmare On Elm Street Movie

Stephen King’s go-to adaptation director may be branching out into another horror icon’s territory soon enough if he gets his way. Well known for being one of the better directors in the genre these days, Mike Flanagan has apparently been dreaming up ideas for a new Nightmare on Elm Street flick. And now, he’s let everyone know to sleep with one eye open.

We told you earlier this week that Wes Craven’s estate is actively looking for pitches to continue Freddy Kreuger’s murderous exploits in either film, TV or both. Flanagan, taking this news in stride, tweeted today a simple but effective pitch to allow himself to pitch his idea:

Okay, so sure, Doctor Sleep wasn’t the best movie in the world, but Flanagan had a lot to balance there, between two different sources combining into one cohesive – and unneeded – sequel. The good news with a new Nightmare movie is that fans have been waiting for another chance for a Freddy flick since the lackluster reboot nine years ago. Flanagan has the horror credentials, too, with The Haunting of Hill House and Gerald’s Game. So why not?

Sincerely, you could do much worse than to have a guy with a mostly proven track record take a stab at a dead franchise. In fact, I’m surprised more creators haven’t spoken up about this potential opportunity to contribute to the horror canon in a big way. To my knowledge, Flanagan is the first to throw his hat in the ring publicly.  Maybe his bravery will inspire other directors to step up and share their dream journals?

What do you all think, though? Is Mike Flanagan equipped to bring us another Nightmare on Elm Street film, reboot, remake, whatever it’ll wind up being? Or would you rather someone else be handed that tattered gardening glove? I wonder what Scorsese is up to post-Irishman…

Thor Might Appear In Another MCU Film Before Love And Thunder

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, by the process of elimination Thor is now the elder statesman of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iron Man is seemingly gone for good along with Black Widow, although the latter will be seen next year in a standalone prequel, Captain America is retired but may or may not cameo in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the Hulk is still only able to be a supporting character due to Universal still holding the rights to his solo movies, and Jeremy Renner’s highly-publicized personal issues seem to have poured cold water on any future plans for Hawkeye.

That leaves the God of Thunder as the only one of the major Phase One characters able to play a prominent role in the franchise going forward, and following the critical and commercial success that greeted both Thor: Ragnarok and the former King of Asgard’s role in Endgame, fans are eager to see more of Chris Hemsworth in his career-defining part.

Obviously, Thor: Love and Thunder is on the way with Taika Waititi back behind the camera and Natalie Portman returning to the fold and set to wield Mjolnir, but Marvel Studios are said to be keen on bringing the hammer-throwing superhero back to the big screen sooner rather than later.

While there are still hopes that Thor will continue his most recent arc and team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, sources close to We Got This Covered – the same ones who told us a Nova movie is in active development and an Aladdin sequel was in the works, both of which we now know to be true – have told us that Marvel are contemplating the idea of having the character appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, with Hemsworth potentially set to play an alternate version of Thor in one of the many realities that the Sorcerer Supreme is set to encounter in the sequel.

We should stress that is just one of several story ideas being thrown around at the moment and there’s no guarantee that it will actually happen. After all, the project is still in early, early development and things can always change.

That being said, the studio are apparently keen to have at least a few of the MCU’s most prominent names make small cameos in the Doctor Strange sequel. And though Thor isn’t the only one who could pop up, his trajectory has left him able to appear virtually anywhere, and as arguably the biggest name left on the Marvel Cinematic Universe roster, his appearance would certainly generate plenty of buzz.
