Ghostbusters 1 And 2 Getting 4K Release With Never Before Seen Footage

Do you remember that very odd moment in a montage in the middle of Ghostbusters where it appears that Dan Ackroyd is having some kind of sexual encounter with a ghost floating above his bed? It’s been raising eyebrows ever since the film’s release, with fans of the movie poring over old scripts to try and figure out what it was intended for.

Now known as the “Fort Detmerring Ghost,” the scene consists of Ray and Winston investigating a haunting at an old military fort. Ray ends up trying on an old officer’s uniform, before a ghost appears and uh… well. Let’s just say “bustin’ makes you feel good.”

Long considered lost on the cutting room floor, the footage has now been located and is coming to a new Steelbook 4K/Blu-ray release, together with a plethora of neat special features.

Here’s what’s in store:

GHOSTBUSTERS

  • 6 Rare & Newly Unearthed Deleted Scenes, including the long-requested Fort Detmerring scenes!
  • Raw takes for the Central Park bums sequence
  • 1984 ShoWest Exhibitor Reel, featuring Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd pitching an early reel of footage to theatrical exhibitors.
  • Full Ghostbusters TV Commercial from the film
  • Ghostbusters TV Commercial Outtakes
  • “A Moment With the Stars” – original press kit featurette
  • Original Domestic Teaser Trailer
  • Original Stereo Audio for the Feature (Blu-ray only)
  • Fan Commentary featuring Troy Benjamin and Chris Stewart (Interdimensional Crossrip podcast), Ashley Victoria Robinson (Geek History Lesson podcast) and Sean Bishop (Ghostbusters prop replica expert), moderated by Ghost Corps’ Eric Reich

GHOSTBUSTERS II

  • Commentary featuring Director Ivan Reitman, Star/Co-Writer Dan Aykroyd and Executive Producer Joe Medjuck
  • “The Oprah Winfrey Show: Cast of Ghostbusters II” – June 1989
  • Full Ghostbusters II Theatrical EPK
  • Rare Unfinished Teaser Trailer – featuring the full commercial from the film!
  • Original Stereo Audio for the Feature (Blu-ray only)

It looks like a pretty full release. The only notable absence I see is the excellent DVD commentary for Ghostbusters featuring Ivan Reitman, Harold Ramis and Joe Medjuck. Perhaps there’s some kind of rights issue holding it up?

Whatever the case, one thing a lot of cinephiles will be keeping an eye on is the quality of the transfer. Hopes are high for the 4K release, especially as there’ve been some dreadful home versions of Ghostbusters in the past. The original 1999 DVD was a decent job, but the 2005 DVD and 2009 Blu-ray pretty much butcher the film if you care about color-grading. Things picked up a bit with the 2014 Blu-ray release, but if this is intended to be a definitive Ghostbusters release, you can be assured fans will be picking over the restoration with a fine toothcomb.

Regardless of how the transfer turns out, I still really want to check out these special features. Finally seeing Fort Detmerring will be awesome, and I’m also curious about what the other deleted scenes for the first movie are going to be. We’ll find out on June 11th, when the double feature Steelbook edition hits stores. And who knows, maybe there’ll be a Ghostbusters 3 easter egg tucked away in there, too?

Kumail Nanjiani In Talks To Join The Eternals

Following on from last week’s news that Angelina Jolie is poised to star in The Eternals, THR reports that Kumail Nanjiani is now in talks to join the cast of the upcoming MCU flick.

The Pakistani-American actor is perhaps best known for his work in comedies like HBO’s Silicon Valley and The Big Sick, the latter of which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Nanjiani also has some experience in major franchise fare, including the upcoming Men in Black: International. While details on his Eternals role are currently under wraps, it was recently reportedly that Chloe Zhao’s film will begin shooting in London this September, so here’s hoping that further details are just around the corner.

The THR piece also doubles down on the recent rumor that Jolie is set to play Sersi, a more outgoing Eternal who relishes moving amongst humankind. In a previous report, the outlet mentioned that the film will feature a love story between the heroine and Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy.

As it stands, Marvel Studios has offered no comment on these recent casting reports, and is unlikely to do so at least until after Avengers: Endgame has brought the saga’s current era to a close. In the meantime, the rumor that the film will feature the MCU’s first gay lead is proving persistent. A report from last week, for instance, even suggested that the actor might be cast in the role of Marvel Comics hero and frequent Avenger, Hercules.

There’ll be plenty of time for confirmation on these claims before The Eternals arrives in theaters in the final quarter of 2020. In the meantime, you catch Nanjiani in Men in Black: International, which is set for release on June 14th.

Here’s Princess Leia’s Original Hologram Speech From An Early Draft Of Star Wars: A New Hope

The first ten minutes of Star Wars: A New Hope is one of the most iconic openings in cinema history. From the giant Star Destroyer invading the entire screen, right through to the first appearance of Darth Vader and Princess Leia recording a plaintive cry for help and blasting an escape pod down to the deserts of Tatooine.

The message she sends was, up until the prequels, one of the only hints we had of what was going on in the years before A New Hope. Now, though, Redditors have once again been poring over a draft of the script dated July 6th, 1976 (freely available online if you want to see it) and have turned up Leia’s original speech, which reads as follows:

General Kenobi, years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars. Now, he begs you to help him in his struggle against the Empire. I regret I am unable to present my father’s request to you in person, but my ship has fallen under attack, and  fear my mission to return with you to Alderaan has failed.

I have fed information vital to the survival of all free planets into the memory of systems of this R-2 unit…my father will know how to retrieve it. You must see this droid safely delivered to him on Alderaan. This is our most desperate hour … You must help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you are my only hope.

As you can see, it’s not radically different, but there are a few crucial nips and tucks that make the whole thing pop a bit more. I’m particularly interested in that final line where someone (I presume Lucas himself), tightened things up by removing “You must” and just having “Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you are my only hope.” It’s a small change, but alters the line from Leia simply ordering Obi-Wan to assist her into a desperate plea. It’s also neat to see “all free planets” get narrowed down to “the Rebellion.”

Plus, any mention of the Clone Wars prior to the prequels is always interesting. Back in the day, Star Wars bulletin boards would hum with discussion of what these mysterious Clone Wars actually were. To be honest, I doubt George Lucas had much of an idea himself, but it certainly sounds cool. And just imagine, what if those clones.. attacked!

Turns out Amazon buying Eero wasn’t the startup success story we thought

When Amazon bought mesh Wi-Fi router company Eero, our first reactions were of exhaustion, consternation and concern: why couldn’t a tiny company with an excellent privacy-minded product be left to its own devices, instead of getting snapped up by the big data giant from Seattle?

Now, we know why. Mashable reports that Amazon paid just $97 million for Eero, far less money than the $148 million it reportedly raised as a startup. That’s something you don’t do unless your business is in trouble, and it means Amazon may have actually saved Eero from a different fate.

The Verge can confirm that $97 million number, by the way, as well as many of the others in Mashable’s story — we’ve seen similar documents, and we believe they’re the real...

‘Old Town Road’ proves TikTok can launch a hit song

Lil Nas X at TikTok headquarters.

Montero “Lil Nas X” Hill’s parents were concerned when their son dropped out of college eight months ago to pursue a career in rap; as the country trap star told Time Magazine, his parents succinctly pointed out there are millions of rappers already crowding the scene. Hill didn’t listen. He had to compete with up-and-coming rappers on streaming services like SoundCloud and Spotify, but Hill had a secret card up his sleeve — a meme and TikTok.

“I promoted the song as a meme for months until it caught on to TikTok and it became way bigger,” Hill told Time. “I was pretty familiar with TikTok: I always thought its videos would be ironically hilarious. When I became a trending topic on there, it was a crazy moment for me. A lot of people...

Former Senate staffer admits to doxxing five senators on Wikipedia

The man who edited Wikipedia with several senators’ private phone numbers and addresses has pleaded guilty to computer fraud and other offenses. Jackson Cosko, a former employee of Senator Maggie Hassan, was arrested last year on suspicion of doxxing five members of Congress. He’s now admitted to breaking into Hassan’s office after being fired, stealing data that included personal contact information, then posting that information online during Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing.

Cosko worked as a computer system administrator for Hassan, but he was fired in May of 2018. According to a plea agreement, he retaliated by using a key from another employee (who was later fired) to break into his old workplace at...

What brain-bending magic tricks can teach us about the mind

Pick a card, any card, and you might feel that you’re in control when you pull the queen of hearts from a magician’s deck. But magicians have strategies that force their audience’s choice — from packing the deck with identical cards, to fanning out the deck with just the right timing so that the choice becomes all but inevitable.

This illusion of free will is one of the many illusions and magic tricks that Gustav Kuhn, a magician turned psychology researcher at Goldsmiths, University London, describes in his new book Experiencing the Impossible: The Science of Magic. Published in March by The MIT Press, the book explores the ways in which magic tricks and illusions can teach us about our brains. Kuhn takes the reader into the...

Ecobee appears to be quietly making its first video camera

Maybe the company known for its smart thermostats isn’t just a smart thermostat company. In newly leaked photos obtained by Dave Zatz of Zatz Not Funny, Ecobee appears to be working on its first indoor video camera. The photos of the camera show a prominent, conical stand and four lights that flash yellow or blue. The shape of it looks vaguely like a smart speaker.

The camera would actually be Ecobee’s second new product outside of its smart thermostats. Its first was a light switch that can double up as an Alexa speaker, which it released last year. There’s evidence that Ecobee could eventually expand into other smart home devices as well. In 2018, Amazon poured millions from its Alexa Fund into investing in Ecobee. It’s possible, given...

5G is still just hype for AT&T and Verizon

AT&T and Verizon had big 5G-related announcements this week: AT&T published speed test results that seemingly validated its “5G E” LTE network as the fastest around, and Verizon launched its 5G network in parts of Chicago and Minneapolis. But both of these announcements underscore just how much of a mess 5G is right now. AT&T’s results appear to be skewed in the company’s favor, and Verizon’s rollout seems slapdash, with poor coverage even in the areas that Verizon promised.

These are just the latest headaches for 5G, which has been marred by delayed rollouts, limited hardware tests, conflicting standards, political wrangling, and more. With telecom companies rushing to be first, odds are the mess of 5G will only get worse as the...

Hidden Google Play info on new ‘Pixel 3a’ phones suggests a ‘midyear’ release

We’ve been hearing for months about the pair of Google’s new midrange Pixel 3 devices coming out this year, and now a Redditor (via 9to5Google) has unearthed even more information about the handsets that points, more than ever, to a summer release date. Thanks to the Google Play Console, the software that allows Android developers to manage apps submitted to the company’s mobile marketplace, the Redditor was able to pull out two new device profiles for codenamed “bonito” and “sargo” phones, widely assumed to be the new midrange Pixel 3 devices.

More telling is that these phones are listed as “midyear experiences,” indicating that Google intends to launch them sometime soon, perhaps at its I/O developer conference in May. At a higher...

Fortnite is copying Apex Legends’ best feature with new ‘reboot van’ coming next week

Epic Games’ Fortnite might be the industry-leading battle royale game, but the developer behind the game is still taking smart cues from competitors. Starting next week, Fortnite will introduce what Epic is calling “reboot vans,” or places where players can bring their teammates back to life if they’ve been knocked out of a match for good. The feature is a direct copy of arguably the best feature of competing battle royale hit Apex Legends, which launched two months ago with so-called respawn beacons that let you revive your teammates.

The feature, which first leaked back in late February, is designed to alleviate what is perhaps the most frustrating element of battle royale games today, which is losing a teammate early on and having to...
