Black Panther Star Lupita Nyong’o In Talks To Join Bond 25

The upcoming Bond 25 is set to serve as the grand finale for Daniel Craig’s run as 007, and it seems that director Cary Joji Fukunaga is hoping to assemble a cast fit for the occasion. We’ve already heard this week that Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek is in final talks to play the villain, and in a new report from Deadline, not only is this claim reaffirmed, but it’s also said that fellow Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o is being courted for a role.

Since nabbing an Academy Award for her feature debut in 2013’s 12 Years a Slave, Nyong’o has attached herself to a number of blockbuster properties, including Star Wars, and more recently, Black Panther. Now it looks like she may soon add James Bond to her resumé, with Deadline reporting that the actress is currently at the top of the Bond Girl shortlist. As for Malek, it’s said that the star is “closing his deal” to play the antagonist, suggesting that he’ll soon officially take his place opposite such returning players as Craig, Lea Seydoux, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris in the 2020 flick.

Though the details on Nyong’o’s potential role have yet to be revealed, one rumor around Malek’s character is that the villain will be a blind man. There’s also been some speculation that the script calls for a North African antagonist, seeing how Malek is of Egyptian heritage and actor Saïd Taghmaoui – who was reportedly eyed for the part – is of Moroccan descent.

In any case, we’ll see if Fukunaga can give Craig a fitting sendoff when Bond 25 hits theaters on April 8th, 2020. In the meantime, you can catch Nyong’o in Jordan Peele’s Us when it comes out on March 22nd, 2019.

Check Out The First Footage From Pokémon The Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution

It seems the legend has returned.

Pokemon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution has unveiled its first footage by way of Twitter (h/t ComicBook.com), and it’s enough to trigger warm, fuzzy feelings of nostalgia.

Pitched as a CGI remake of the original classic from ’98, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is locked in for a Japanese debut this July – hence today’s foreign language trailer to coincide with the ongoing Pokémon celebrations – by which point fans will be able to take a stroll down memory lane alongside Ash, Pikachu, Misty, and Brock as they prepare for the fight of their lives.

Granted, this teaser trailer doesn’t offer an awful lot; if anything, it simply gives us an inkling of the CG graphics that will be present in Pokemon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, which may take some getting used to, given the original anime was limited to 2D back in ’98. Still, as far as 20-year celebrations go, this is shaping up to be a pretty special occasion for the Gen 1 Pokémon – Mewtwo included, who was recently confirmed as the villain of Warner’s live-action Detective Pikachu movie.

July 12th is the date Pokémon The Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is scheduled to release in Japan, though there’s currently no mention of when the CGI remake will make its way west. It’ll likely be some time in 2019, given the Pokémon franchise will soon be firing on all cylinders what with the back-to-back release of Detective Pikachu and Sword and Shield, the newly-unveiled titles for Nintendo Switch.

Rob Letterman and Warner Bros. get the ball rolling with Detective Pikachu in May before Pokémon Sword and Shield close the book on what will be a historic year for the Poké franchise this fall.

The New X-Men: Dark Phoenix Trailer Threw Shade At The MCU

As we all know, X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be the last mainline mutant-based movie to come from Fox before Disney hoovers them up and Marvel Studios gets the rights back to Professor X and his super-powered peers. At this stage, we’re not sure to what extent the film will wrap up the franchise that we’ve been watching for the past 20 years, but at the very least, the recent trailer tells us that the movie won’t resist throwing some shade at Marvel.

In the trailer above, the assembled mutants are captured by some sort of anti-mutant military unit, only being freed when the super-powered Jean Grey besieges the train they’re being transported on. If you tear your attention away from the awesome spectacle and action for a moment though, take a look at the insignia on the sleeves of the soldiers and you’ll notice that they’re labelled “MCU.” You can’t tell us that that’s just a coincidence…

Presumably, the initialism stands for something like “Mutant Control Unit,” suggesting this is some governmental agency dedicated to policing mutants. Interestingly, Deadpool 2 featured a similar body called DMC, so it seems like writer/director Simon Kinberg deliberately decided to revamp the organization in order to make a tongue-in-cheek dig at the rival franchise. After all, these military goons are rounding up and kidnapping the X-Men, which is one way of looking at what Marvel’s doing with the rights to the characters.

At this point, it hasn’t been 100% confirmed that the X-Men will be folded into the MCU, but all the evidence suggests that they will. We know for sure that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will shepherd the franchise from now on and the Russo brothers feel confident that he’ll want one cohesive Marvel movie universe. On the flip side, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy and Sophie Turner don’t seem to think mixing the X-Men and the Avengers would work, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Dark Phoenix Director Says The Film May Be The End Of The Current Franchise

Avengers: Endgame may not be the only comic book movie finale of 2019.

Per EW, director Simon Kinberg has acknowledged the very real possibility that Dark Phoenix will be remembered as the final chapter in this current X-Men saga, before those loveable mutants inevitably revert back to Marvel Studios as part of the Disney-Fox merger.

When, exactly, that reunion takes place is still subject to debate, but for now, Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg is quietly preparing for the end of the X-Men franchise as we know it. That’s not to say this summer’s X-blockbuster will be the very last time we see Jean Grey and Co. on the big screen – far from it, in fact – simply that these characters are likely to be reborn once the Mouse House has sealed its acquisition.

Here’s what Kinberg told EW about the impending merger and its lasting effects:

I truly don’t know. I haven’t had formal talks with Disney. I know [Marvel Studios President] Kevin Feige very well. But we haven’t had formal talks because until the merger is official, they’re not allowed to have those kinds of conversations with the folks at Fox or myself. What’s interesting is obviously I started this movie long before Disney purchased Fox, and I approached the movie knowing that it was the fourth movie with our First Class cast and that the Phoenix story for me is the ultimate X-Men story.

Hailed as the “climax of the franchise,” Dark Phoenix is the closest thing to a one-to-one adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga since The Last Stand disappointed X-fans the world over back in 2006. Can Kinberg’s starry epic make amends for what’s come before? That’s the big question coming out of last night’s trailer, though the director remains confident.

I approached the movie like it was the culmination in some ways — not that there couldn’t be other movies, but I did approach the movie as if, like, if you spent 20 years of living with this family, this is the movie you see the family truly tested, fall apart, and hopefully come back together. There was something about that sense of closure for the family, that sense of test, that sense of loss. It felt like not this is the end necessarily, but this is it for them.

Kinberg concluded:

It is the climax of this franchise. When we did the hair and makeup tests for this movie, I had the Doors song “The End” playing just to set the mood for the actors and the crew. It was this feeling of this is the climax of a lot of stories and a long relationship that we’ve all built up. It felt like it was time at least to give them some huge explosive story that demanded a different kind of resilience from them. I really felt on this one I couldn’t imagine where else to go with these characters after what they’ve gone through in this movie.

Dark Phoenix descends into theaters on June 7th, and only then will we know if the X-Men will be able to contain Jean Grey once and for all.

Twitter announced today that it’s building a new feature that would let users hide replies to their tweets. The feature, noticed first by expert software unpacker Jane Manchun Wong, would bring a drastic change to how users control the conversations they create on the platform. It wouldn’t let a user permanently hide replies, but it would make those replies more difficult to see in the event the original conversation starter wanted to discourage bad-faith or otherwise unpleasant discussions around their tweets.

The company is currently making multiple versions of a “Standard Range” Model 3 that can travel around 220 miles on a single charge. Previously, the most affordable Model 3 started at $42,900 after a February price reduction.

The Standard Range base model will start at $35,000, offers a top speed of 130mph and can go from 0 to 60mph in 5.6 seconds. Epic Games was sued today by the parent of an underage player in California who are claiming that Fortnite Save the World’s original blind-draw loot box mechanics were unfair and deceptive to consumers.

Twitter announced today that it’s building a new feature that would let users hide replies to their tweets. The feature, noticed first by expert software unpacker Jane Manchun Wong, would bring a drastic change to how users control the conversations they create on the platform. It wouldn’t let a user permanently hide replies, but it would make those replies more difficult to see in the event the original conversation starter wanted to discourage bad-faith or otherwise unpleasant discussions around their tweets.
