Ant-Man And The Wasp Director Sees A Future For Cassie Lang

Exactly how far ahead does Marvel Studios plan their stories? Though Abby Ryder Fortson of Ant-Man and the Wasp fame just turned ten last March, a statement from director Peyton Reed has got some fans speculating that the groundwork is already being laid for the actress’s own superhero saga.

The quote in question comes from a bonus featurette for the home release of Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne’s latest outing, in which Reed suggests that Ant-Man’s daughter Cassie could have a prominent future in the franchise.

“Well, I think one of the things that we’ve set the seeds for in both movies — and I think particularly in Ant-Man and the Wasp — is Cassie Lang, Scott’s daughter. In the comics, she goes on to be a hero in her own right, so I love the idea that in this movie we see that moment where she covers for Scott and stands up to the FBI agent. We see a little bit of her father’s personality in her. I’m intrigued to kind of see what the future holds for Cassie.”

From the sound of things, Reed may not have a specific plan in mind for the character, but the comics certainly offer some ideas. In the Young Avengers books, for instance, Cassie joins the titular team under the persona of Stature. Another name she’s been known to go by is Stinger, but either way, she generally exhibits much the same size-changing powers as her father. Of course, we have no real evidence that the movies will be taking the same route, but assuming the MCU still has a good few years left in it, surely this isn’t beyond the realms of possibility.

Though it’s unclear whether Cassie survived the universe-wide purge that concluded Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp did show us the unfortunate fate of Scott’s various colleagues. Just as Hope temporarily lost her mother to the Quantum Realm, Cassie’s father is himself stranded in this mysterious place, but you can expect Ant-Man to make a return when Avengers 4 comes out on May 3rd, 2019.

The Conjuring’s Ed And Lorraine Warren To Return For Annabelle 3

Much like its fellow Conjuring Universe production The Nun, the Annabelle movies don’t always fare well with critics but they manage a lot better at the box office – so much so, in fact, that Warner are even releasing the untitled Annabelle 3 over a year before the franchise-founding Conjuring series has been given its third instalment.

Speaking of which, this trilogy-making flick has also nabbed the leads from The Conjuring, albeit in supporting roles. Yes, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will be returning once more as Ed and Lorraine Warren respectively, though the focus of the film – other than the demonic doll, of course – will be their ten-year-old daughter Judy, played in previous features by Sterling Jerins.

Deadline’s report confirms earlier claims that Annabelle 3 will be the Night at the Museum of horror films, in that the feared figurine will be wreaking havoc one frightful evening when she awakens the evil hibernating in the Warrens’ Artifacts Room. With the parents out of the house, Judy and her teenage cousin babysitter will be forced to fend for themselves. It seems that this ever-expanding cinematic universe is still finding ways of exploring new ideas while keeping the Warrens as the beating heart of the saga.

For another example of how this franchise plans to stay fresh, it was previously reported that The Conjuring 3 will be moving away from the the haunted house format of the first two entries. What exactly the movie will be offering in its place remains to be seen, but that flick is scheduled to hit theaters on September 11th, 2020.

In the meantime, Annabelle 3 will be bringing the franchise back home when it comes out on July 3, 2019

New Birds Of Prey Plot Details Tease What Harley’s Up To

As of earlier this month, the core cast of DC’s upcoming female team-up movie Birds of Prey is complete, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smolett-Bell and Rosie Perez joining the comic book universe alongside Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn as Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya, respectively.

Previous leaked story details have told us that the gang will be joining forces to rescue Cassandra Cain – one of the Batgirls from the source material – from the clutches of Gotham-based crime boss Black Mask. Thanks to Mario-Francisco Robles of Revenge of the Fans, we now have even more plot details on Birds of Prey, though as with any report like this, we’d advise taking it with a grain of salt.

To start with, though, RTF reveals where the characters are at when the film begins. Laurel Lance AKA Black Canary is a singer who moonlights as a crime-fighter, Helena Bertinelli AKA Huntress is an assassin formally employed by Black Mask who now wants him dead after discovering he killed her family and Harley will be attempting to fly solo after splitting with the Joker (who apparently won’t appear but will still be referenced). Finally, Montoya is a GCPD cop who’s on the trail of Huntress and Harley, two of the most wanted women in the city.

As previously stated, they’ll be brought together by the hunt to save Cassandra from Black Mask. Roman Sionis is apparently grooming Cain to be his new “perfect assassin” now that Huntress has turned against him. According to RTF, Cassandra’s portrayal is akin to X-23’s in Logan – she’ll be a deadly teen who’s gifted at killing, but not so much with making conversation.

From what we understand – spoilers ahead – the Birds will reportedly succeed in rescuing Cain before the third act, which will revolve around Black Mask getting his revenge by sending his men to take on the team. Robles writes that he’s also heard that Birds of Prey could feature an “epic cameo,” but he’s not revealing who that is until he’s confirmed it with his source to make sure it’s genuine.

Cathy Yan’s movie is expected to go before the cameras on January 15th ahead of its release on February 7th, 2020, and as soon as we learn more, we’ll let you know.
