Marvel’s Eternals Movie Has Found Its Director

So much focus has been placed on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its immediate future – think Avengers 4 and Spider-Man: Far From Home – that not many people have stopped to think about the MCU of yesteryear.

And we’re not referring to Captain America: The First Avenger, nor are we speaking about the ’90s nostalgia underpinning Captain Marvel; rather, we draw your attention to The Eternals, an ancient race of superpowered aliens that predates the current MCU by a couple of million years.

A live-action movie is already in the works, after Marvel Studios brought Matthew and Ryan Firpo on board to hash out a script. It’s still early days, mind you, but now the project has taken yet another big step forward, with Variety reporting that Chloe Zhao has been selected to direct the film, after she found herself earning much acclaim for Sundance darling The Rider.

Of course, plot details and the like still remain tightly under wraps, but after seeing Infinity War, it’s not too difficult to figure out how the Eternals may fit into the wider MCU. I mean, aside from the inclusion of Titan, Thanos’ homeworld which was home to one race of Eternals, the movie also name-checks an important member of the species from the comic books.

If you’ll recall, when the Mad Titan meets Red Skull on Vormir, as he searches for the Soul Stone, the fan favorite villain immediately identifies him as “Son of A’Lars.” A’Lars, for those who don’t know, is Thanos’ father in the source material. More commonly known as Mentor, he’s also the founder of the Eternals colony on Titan.

Of course, there’s nothing to say that Josh Brolin’s character would even show up in Marvel’s Eternals movie, but the seeds have clearly been planted and with two writers and a director all now on board, we imagine we’ll be hearing more on the project in no time at all.

Here’s Your First Look At The New Chucky In Child’s Play Reboot

If you required more proof of Hollywood being a strange place, one need not look any further than the confusion surrounding the Child’s Play franchise.

Seeing as how last year’s Cult of Chucky is still very much fresh in our memories – a film that I really dug, mind you – it’s quite surprising to see the brand branching into so many directions. I mean, it made sense for creator Don Mancini and company to continue the enduring saga as a TV series, but it’s the other stuff that’s left me scratching my head.

You see, while Universal is free to pursue the TV show and more movie sequels of their own, MGM is committing to a reboot of the franchise, which has just unveiled its first look at the reimagined icon. Seen below, we’ve been granted a teaser for the new Chucky, courtesy of Orion Pictures’ Twitter page.

From the look of it, this alternate take on the killer doll shares visual similarities with its predecessor, though it seems like it just stepped right out of a MAD Magazine parody. Still, it’s hard for both myself – and likely the aforementioned Mancini – to get past the notion of Chucky being repackaged as an out of control artificial intelligence.

To be honest, I can see this image garnering both positive and negative attention – but perhaps more so on the negative side because longtime fans seem to be standing alongside Mancini and actor Brad Dourif, who won’t be lending his pipes to this iteration.

For better or worse, we’ll bring you all developments regarding the Child’s Play reboot as they surface. So, as always, keep watching this space for more.

Fahrenheit 11/9 Review

Years ago, Michael Moore sat at the same table as Donald Trump when they were both scheduled as guests on (of all people) Roseanne Barr’s daytime talk show. Knowing what we know today, the implausibility of that image is amusing, but Moore wasn’t laughing. Trump, nervous to face Moore’s imminent firestorm of a debate, refused to be a part of the interview until the controversially outspoken filmmaker agreed to tame himself. Moore agreed and traded his pressing questions for cheap jokes. In voiceover, he tells those of us watching Fahrenheit 11/9 that he was shocked to learn that Trump enjoyed his first film, Roger & Me, which steamrolled over General Motors then CEO Roger B. Smith. Trump then said, “I hope he never does one about me.”

Nobody would want to be on the receiving end of one of Michael Moore’s investigations, but after watching his latest explosive movie (the poster of which features the President teeing off into a mushroom cloud), you’ll understand why Trump was particularly wary. At its core, 11/9 is a compilation of anger, not directed entirely at the country’s current administration, but which certainly attempts to answer the most popular question of 2016: “how the f*** did this happen?”

It turns out the answer is not as simple as Hilary over Bernie, or the obsessive media coverage, or even the Russians. Moore bulldozes his way through the events of that election night – “the sure thing” – and what led to it, painting a picture not of a tyrant slipping into power, but rather of a society that threw the banana peel down. The republicans are to blame. The democrats are to blame. Beyond that, we’re told once again that the largest political party in the country are non-voters. Conservatives, liberals, protestors, counter protesters, bigots, and even Gwen Stefani are all points-of-interest on Moore’s extensive timeline.

There was a bitter taste in my mouth as I watched journalists and celebrities laugh at the idea of a “President Trump.” I remember laughing with them, jokingly stating that the one good thing that would come from a Trump victory would be the deactivation of his Twitter account…

Moore did warn us back then not to dismiss “Real America,” the silent majority of the angry working class who are portrayed in a not so glamorous light here. He reminds us early on that he made that warning, and in doing so, separates himself from the rest of the nation’s accused. To me, it felt cowardly, but I suppose that’s the problem with “everyone’s at fault” proclamations: in their nature, no one is qualified to make them.

But regardless of that tiny paradox, Moore manages to effectively display and elaborate upon his disgust, which is also directed at the water crisis continuing to face his hometown of Flint, Michigan. The city’s water is famously polluted with a deadly amount of lead. It’s a years-long scandal riddled in political corruption that has yet to positively settle. Moore’s method of addressing the issue is by first popping into Governor Rick Snyder’s office to conduct a citizen’s arrest. When that fails, Moore hops into a water truck and sprays the governor’s lawn with the poisonous water served to his people.

If the giant, toxin-spraying hose didn’t give it away, Moore is quite the showman – I guess that’s why Fahrenheit 9/11 leads the all-time documentary box office by a margin of over $40 million. However, 11/9 feels much more urgent; with this film, he campaigns alongside President Obama (who Moore also calls into question) in marketing the upcoming midterms as the most important in our lifetime.

Though 11/9 has an abundance of “America is doomed” moments, Michael Moore seems conflictingly convinced that there are certain Americans who can pull us out of this hole. Hope points towards the younger generations of political activists, including congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as well as the very much active Parkland shooting survivors, all of whom were unable to vote in 2016.

The scenes dedicated to these young leaders and Flint’s polluted water are intoxicating; they make up the bulk of the film’s strength. As a not particularly political person, I was shocked to see how much more there was behind the familiar headlines.  The Trump parts are less poignant; Moore is aware that a solely Trump tale would add little to the conversation.

With that said, President Trump and his constituents are surely not going to appreciate Fahrenheit 11/9 – I expect to see an array of angry tweets here shortly. One rather predictable sequence sets up a comparison not lost on many Americans. We are told that there are no perfect comparisons in history, but I shuddered when I learned that the Nazi Party didn’t win the popular vote either. I doubt I’ll be the only one.

Joker Director Shares New Footage Of Joaquin Phoenix In Full Makeup

Director Todd Phillips has shared another sneak peek of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck – better known to you, I and the people of Gotham City as the Joker.

Only this time, there’s a twist; it’s an official video that superimposes footage of Phoenix’s demented trickster on top of the mundane Arthur, and it’s all set against “Laughing” by The Guess Who. How very appropriate.

It’s also… strangely unsettling? For one, the camera gradually zooms towards Joaquin Phoenix’s titular protagonist as his lips curl into a sinister smile, only for said grin to drop in the blink of an eye. It’s subtle, but it plays into the character’s psychotic tenets, and it’ll be fascinating to watch an actor of Phoenix’s stature flit between one mindset and the other at the drop of a hat.

Said to be more of a character study than anything else, we know Joker has assembled a who’s who of Hollywood talent, including Robert De Niro and Deadpool 2‘s Zazie Beetz, the latter of whom is said to be playing a romantic interest to the disheveled Arthur. This is an origin story, remember, so expect to find out how Batman’s greatest adversary came to be when the lights go down next fall. Principal photography is now underway, too, so get ready for a whole host of updates from Todd Phillips’ Instagram feed.

Joker has been penciled in for a release on October 4th, 2019 and is said to be completely unaffiliated with Worlds of DC. It is, by definition, a standalone, self-contained story, and this early peek at Phoenix in costume is radically different from Jared Leto’s own interpretation of the Clown Prince of Crime, which was all style and no substance.

That Cryptic Avengers 4 Photo Has An Intriguing Infinity War Connection

A couple of days ago, Avengers 4 directors Joe and Anthony Russo took to Twitter with a cryptic new set photo and the accompanying caption: “Look hard.”

Naturally, the fans were mobilized to piece together the potential meaning of this image, sometimes drawing such strange and unlikely conclusions that you had to wonder if the filmmaking brothers were just messing with our heads. That being said, one Twitter user may actually be onto something when they observe how the partially obscured device to the far left of the photo bears a striking resemblance to a prop seen in the background of the recent Avengers: Infinity War.

This mysterious machine is located in the headquarters of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and your guess is as good as ours on what part it could play in next year’s release. Lord knows, fans are certainly going to try figuring this one out, and while we seriously doubt that the Avengers casually have a time machine or a gateway into the quantum realm lying around, you can bet that the theorists will find some way of working the prop into some of the more popular pre-existing predictions.

We’re still many months off from finding out what the Russos actually have in mind for Avengers 4, but we’ll likely receive a few answers in the upcoming Captain Marvel. Infinity War teased Carol Danvers as the last great hope for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it’s all but certain that she’ll have some important role to play in the final fight against Thanos, alongside the few established heroes who survived Infinity War.

It all comes together in Avengers 4, which is set to bring Marvel’s Phase 3 to a close, while hopefully telling us what that big engine thing does, when it hits theaters on May 3rd, 2019.

The Symbiote Feeds On Humans In New Venom TV Spot

Contrary to whatever hatred the naysayers have to spew, I’m still very much looking forward Venom because everything I’ve seen pertaining to it is so badass. The iconic logo may be absent from the titular anti-hero’s chest, sure, but I’m positive that I can work past the omission. After all, Dolph Lundgren didn’t rock the skull in 1989’s The Punisher, yet I’m able to appreciate that offering as a decent 80’s action film.

Getting back to the subject of Eddie Brock’s solo outing, I can’t help feeling spoiled by all the content hitting the web as of late. In this week alone, we’ve been treated to a featurette and the first full clip taken from the upcoming film that further hint we’ll be in for one hell of a viewing experience. And if that weren’t enough, a new TV spot has begun circulating as well.

Seen at the top of this article, the promo that’s been titled “Eats Humans Alive” continues showcasing the stunning action and visual effects that this flick is sure to boast. And as the tagline implies, the symbiote apparently does satisfy its case of the munchies at some point.

Still, it’s worth noting that we’re not to expect some sort of all-out gorefest because, don’t forget, the theatrical cut has been granted a PG-13 rating. As a result of that, chatter has begun making its rounds suggesting that the reasoning behind this is so that an eventual crossover with Spider-Man can come to fruition, but we’ll just have to wait and see with that one.

Less ultra-violence notwithstanding, you’ll be able to count me among those flocking to their local cinema in a matter of weeks. Plus, it’s very likely that an unrated cut will be released on home video in the not too distant future, so we’ll probably get to see what the symbiote is like with the gloves off anyway.

Marvel Studios Co-President Just As Confused By Avengers 4 Photo As We Are

If, like us, you threw your hands up and admitted defeat after poring over Wednesday’s ominous Avengers 4 teaser photo, you’re not alone; Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito has gone on record to admit that he simply “can’t figure out” what’s going on in the snap (not that one), prompting renewed cries for Joe and Anthony Russo to unveil the film’s title.

Of course, that’s assuming the Russo Brothers were actually teasing the top-secret Avengers 4 title, and not something else related to the sequel’s equally mysterious plot.

We know to expect the first-look trailer sometime before the year’s end – particularly now that Captain Marvel‘s blistering first trailer is already out in the wild – and we imagine the title announcement won’t be too far behind. Hell, it may well occur sooner than we think, after Wednesday’s teasing snapshot fueled rumors that ‘Endgame’ was back on the table, despite the Russo Brothers categorically denying previous rumors.

So it seems the Russos really aren’t taking any chances when it comes to Avengers 4 – unless Louis D’Esposito is just playing along in order to throw everyone off the scent.

Either way, aside from ‘Endgame,’ other titles that have been ruled out include ‘Annihilation,’ ‘Disassembled’ and ‘Infinity Gauntlet,’ and that’s despite Zoe Saldana name-dropped the latter during a red carpet event for Avengers: Infinity War. Again, this is further proof that right now, there are only a select few individuals privy to the Avengers 4 title, as Joe and Anthony Russo fight to maintain some semblance of mystery and intrigue for their 2019 epic.

It’s due for release on May 3rd and is widely considered to be the culmination of Phase 3. Buckle up, folks, we’re in for quite the ride.

Spotify is testing personalized song recommendations in official playlists

Spotify is testing out personalization for its editor-curated playlists, according to a report today from Hypebot. In one named example, songs that Spotify’s algorithm believed a user would like were mixed into a hand-curated workout playlist. A source independently confirmed the test to The Verge.

The test appears to only be showing for select users and on mid-tier playlists. Whether Spotify plans to roll this out as a permanent feature is still to be determined — the company runs tests all the time for groups of users. But having Spotify’s algorithm shuffle in songs individualized for each user on playlists could be one way to keep the content fresh, as most playlists are updated by curators on a weekly basis.

Nintendo lets terminal cancer patient play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate early

Chris Taylor, like any Nintendo fan, is hyped to see that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is shaping up to be mashup fighter of epic proportions, but unlike most of us, the 21-year-old is not sure he’ll live long enough to see the Switch game on store shelves. Taylor has terminal cancer and has been given months to live, so his friends started a social media campaign to get Nintendo’s attention.

Over the last week, Smash Bros. fans on Twitter and Reddit have lobbied Nintendo to let Taylor play Ultimate before he passes; these posts have gotten thousands of signal boosts from fans who were touched by Taylor’s situation.

Apple-owned sleep tracker Beddit is eliminating cloud service support

Beddit, the sleep tracking product acquired by Apple last year, will no longer support cloud service, as spotted by 9to5Mac. The news was announced in an App Store update for Beddit, which says that new users will no longer be able to use Beddit Cloud, and existing users have access until November 15th.

The company’s Beddit 3 Sleep Monitor is a sensor-equipped strip that slides under your bedsheets to track movements through the night. Marvel gets first woman of color director for The Eternals

The Eternals, a tale of cosmic beings created by Jack Kirby in the 1970s, now has a director: Chloé Zhao, a Chinese filmmaker who is known for working on indie projects, says The Hollywood Reporter. It will mark the first time that a woman of color has directed a film for the superhero studio, which has largely relied on white men to helm its films.

Sennheiser and Magic Leap are partnering to develop spatial audio products

Sennheiser is getting involved in the augmented reality space. The headphone and audio gear company announced today that it’s partnering with Magic Leap to develop spacial audio accessories for the AR headset’s platform.

It’s specifically joining the “Works with Magic Leap” certification program, which is basically just Magic Leap’s way of ensuring that accessories and tools work as they’re supposed to when interacting with its headset. Sennheiser also hinted that it might have more news to share during Magic Leap’s LEAP conference taking place in Los Angeles next month. Amazon’s new Echo Auto — a $50 credit card-sized box that sits on your dashboard and brings Alexa to your car — is a lot of things at once. It’s a relatively cheap way to smarten up a car that might not have a snazzy infotainment system. It’s a new beachhead for Amazon in the automotive world, which the company has focused increasing attention on over the years. The Walking Dead developer Telltale hit with devastating layoffs as part of a ‘majority studio closure’

Telltale Games, creators of episodic adventure games like The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, and Batman: The Enemy Within, laid off approximately 250 employees today as part of what the company is calling a “majority studio closure.” According to multiple sources The Verge spoke with, employees were let go with no severance.
