With the rise of deepfakes, Hollywood has not shied away from using technology to de-age its actors, with varying degrees of success. But where other media companies seem to fail, Marvel thrives, consistently bringing to our screens de-aged characters that don’t look like trash.
The latest evidence of such a feat is Secret Invasion, which showcased much younger versions of Nick Fury in episodes two and three. Instead of getting another actor to play the role, the Disney Plus show followed in Captain Marvel‘s footsteps, by digitally de-aging Samuel L. Jackson once again. What makes matters even more impressive is the fact that Fury is only one example in Marvel’s list of successfully de-aged characters, and fans are taking notice.
With everyone in agreement, Marvel enthusiasts then took to figuring out why exactly Fury’s de-aging is one of the best out there. Besides the obvious reasons — like giving VFX artists a proper amount of time to work their magic, and avoiding the use of deepfake for complex action scenes — there’s also the important detail of there being plenty of existing footage of Jackson in various stages of life. All that paired with the likelihood of makeup being used in combination with VFX allow Marvel to stand out from the competition when it comes to this particular subject.
Secret Invasion may be under a lot of fire for its confirmed use of A.I., but this is proof that not all of the show’s use of technology is a bad thing. When used by humans, digital advancements can lead to wonderful results.
