An outrageous horror comedy sequel might just be a masterpiece for those with the right mindset
If you’re going to craft a sequel to a horror comedy that was so over the top it bordered on the ridiculous, and then slap an even more preposterous suffix onto the end, then there are a set of expectations that demand to be met. For better or worse, Piranha 3DD made the grade and then some.
Alexandre Aja’s remake of the cult favorite upped the ante when it came to sun, sea, sand, sex, and blood, which proved to be a recipe for success after it tore strips off the box office and ended up winning surprising levels of acclaim given its wildly excessive nature and penchant for turning the dial up to 11, then leaving it stuck there.

Marvel fans waste no time in pointing out that Wakanda, just like Chicago, was created by white people
Black Panther is quite rightly considered a hugely culturally important movie for the African diaspora. It’s written and directed by Ryan Coogler, boasts a stacked cast of incredible Black actors, and leans heavily into Afro-futurist aesthetics. Soon after its release, critic Natasha Alford summed it up in The New York Times as “a master class in what it means to be proud of who you are”.
But it perhaps shouldn’t be forgotten that, despite all the above, Black Panther and Wakanda were created by two Jewish New Yorkers, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. This is being called out on social media after a post unfavorably comparing Chicago to Wakanda:

At least one person thinks Ana de Armas deserves the Best Actress Oscar, which is something
Pedro Almodóvar is a self-professed fan of Andrew Dominik’s incredibly controversial Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, starring Ana de Armas. After praising her performance back in May of last year, when most of the world had yet to watch and chastise the film, the acclaimed Spanish auteur is doubling down on his love for the actress’ take on the blonde bombshell, following her Oscar nomination.
De Armas’ Oscar nod caused quite the uproar among the film community, not necessarily because of her performance, but because many believe a film like Blonde shouldn’t have been given any kind of recognition. The Netflix picture, based on the eponymous biographical fiction novel by Joyce Carol Oates, has been criticized for offering an exploitative depiction of the Hollywood icon. For Almodóvar however, there is no doubt about it – de Armas deserves the Oscar.

James Gunn gets a very non-governmental response after bowing to congressional pressure over the DCU slate
Just when you thought the demands for James Gunn to unveil the first wave of DCU projects couldn’t get any louder, the United States government has decided to get involved. Or at least, one of its members.
Long Beach congressman Robert Garcia took it upon himself to threaten The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker creator with an official hearing if the announcement wasn’t made by the end of the month, which just so happens to be the end of tomorrow. Needless to say, being accosted by Washington captured the filmmaker’s attention.

Tobey Maguire bravely defends Marvel’s consistently inconsistent pre-MCU output
It goes without saying that the Marvel Cinematic Universe changed the trajectory of cinema in its entirety and not just the superhero genre, but it’s not as if comic book adaptations were on life support prior to Iron Man reinventing the game.
Stephen Norrington’s Blade, Bryan Singer’s X-Men, and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man are pinpointed as the three most pivotal movies in reigniting a genre that was in real danger of fizzling out at the turn of the millennium, but the downside is that Hollywood decided to rush virtually every recognizable character into development as quickly as possible to capitalize.

‘Suicide Squad’ director had a completely different plan in mind for Harley Quinn and the Joker
Unless he actually gets given the opportunity to prove the doubters wrong by releasing his original cut of the movie, David Ayer’s career will continue to have the shadow of Suicide Squad‘s negative reception hanging over its head.
The antihero ensemble blockbuster may have made a killing at the box office, but it’s also the lowest-rated installment in the history of the DCU, and has largely been swept under the rug in the aftermath. We’re closing in on seven years since the filmmaker’s comic book adaptation was taken out of his hands and completely overhauled in post-production, and yet he’s still batting away accusations that he was the one responsible for the film’s poor quality.

“For us, Uncharted was insanely successful — Uncharted 4 was one of our best selling games — and we’re able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we’re done. We’re moving on.”

The Andrea Riseborough conspiracy thickens after claims her surprise nomination may have been illegal
Just when you thought it was safe to take off that foil hat in the aftermath of the recently-announced nominees for the upcoming Academy Awards, the Andrea Riseborough conspiracy has evolved into the realms of illegality.
After a grassroots campaign that saw her win the backing of a suspiciously large number of high-profile industry figures, the To Leslie star sneaked in at the last second to secure a surprise nomination in the Best Actress category. While it’s undoubtedly an incredible performance, it didn’t take long for the internet to suspect something sinister was afoot.

A superior slasher splits opinion on whether it’s overlooked or a firmly established classic
When it comes to some of the internet’s more irritable nuances, there are few more reliable hotbeds than r/horror; the subreddit is rife with clickbait titles, reactionary bait, “unpopular” opinions, “hot” takes, and a general disregard for the sentiment of the community, which can be either a virtue or a vice depending on the subject.
One post recently managed to capture the best and the worst of all of the above by bringing a discussion of The Hitcher to the table. The film, widely panned by critics upon its release in 1986, including some palpably venomous words from Roger Ebert, found new life years later as a cult classic, and while it didn’t quite receive the reappraisal that John Carpenter’s The Thing did, one user has argued that it’s more than deserving of such recognition.

What do you get when Jennifer Lopez, Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Coolidge and a bunch of other celebrities head off on a paid vacation and make a movie at the same time? Normally, you’d be right to say, “A late-career Adam Sandler picture,” but this time you’d get Shotgun Wedding.
Lopez’s latest dip into rom-com waters is a dumb, but fun time. There’s a rollicking adventure, attempts at romance, and plenty of beautiful scenery for anyone looking to pass an hour and change, but not a lot of substance at the heart of it all.

A record-breaking blockbuster that laughed in the face of bad reviews uncovers hidden treasure on Netflix
Everyone knows at this stage that universal acclaim isn’t an indicator of any movie’s chances of box office success, but there is a hint of irony to 2017’s blockbuster action comedy Kung Fu Yoga setting a smattering of records when it’s a distinctly mid-tier globetrotting adventure.
After exploding out of the gate to haul in a mighty $258 million globally – the overwhelming majority of which admittedly came from home territory China – writer and director Stanley Tong’s culture clash escapade became the highest-grossing comedy film ever released in the country until it was eventually overtaken by Never Say Die.

Bruce Campbell is understandably curious about a real-life ‘Book of the Dead’
Legend has it that it was written by the Dark Ones. Necronomicon ex Mortis, roughly translated as the “Book of the Dead.” The book served as a passageway to the evil worlds beyond. It was written long ago. When the seas ran red with blood…
The Necronomicon is at the heart of the Evil Dead franchise, a diabolical tome that summons demons that various people just can’t help reading aloud. Star Bruce Campbell, who plays the chainsaw-wielding Ash Williams across multiple movies, TV shows, and video games, can attest that chaos usually follows.

Review: ‘Teen Wolf: The Movie’ is a swan song for fans who feel short-changed
With the imminent arrival of spinoff series Wolf Pack, a feature length version of MTV’s Teen Wolf: The Movieseeks to close out one whilst introducing another on Paramount Plus from on Jan. 26. Whether this is entirely necessary depends upon your perspective since the Jeff Davis (Criminal Minds) creation had already run for six seasons and concluded in 2017.
With an opening salvo that includes overly dramatic rainstorms, emblematic silver bullets placed on polished surfaces, and the release of a malevolent spirit – Teen Wolf gets off to a promising start. With the emergence of other familiar faces including Dylan Sprayberry’s Liam Dunbar, Ian Bohen’s Peter Hale, and Holland Ruben’s Lydia Martin – this slice of MTV nostalgia makes its intentions clear from the outset.

Review: ‘Missing’ turns up with an appealing Zoomer update to the noir thrillers of the past
Missing is a movie that is far better than it should be. It takes place entirely through the point of view of the various cameras – phone, computer, security – that monitor and record the characters all day every day. Teen screen addict June “Junebug” Allen’s mother Grace has gone on a 10-day getaway to Colombia with her new boyfriend. When Grace goes missing, June finds herself using every app on her laptop to unravel the mystery of her kidnapping while never leaving the comfort of her bedroom.
On its face, Missing is a Zoomer version of popular 1980s moralistic thrillers like Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct, in which the action is precipitated by a hero’s fatal flaw, leading to an emotionally manipulative-but-satisfying climax.

The worst-reviewed entry in an iconic blockbuster franchise is a lot more popular than its reputation suggests
The DNA of the entire buddy cop genre as we know it can be traced directly back to Shane Black and Richard Donner’s Lethal Weapon, which played a substantial part in establishing many of the tropes that define any movie or TV show that revolves around a pair of bickering law enforcement officials.
The first two installments won rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, before the law of diminishing returns eventually set in. In terms of its Rotten Tomatoes score, Lethal Weapon 4 is comfortably the worst-rated installment of the quartet, but is it really as disappointing as its reputation suggests?

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ star recalls disastrous James Bond audition
James Cameron clearly sees something others don’t in Sam Worthington. After Avatar became the highest-grossing movie of all time he went on to appear in a bunch of middling action movies, though he’s back on top after returning to Pandora in the smash-hit Avatar: The Way of Water.
Worthington will reprise the role in the three upcoming Avatar movies, with Jake Sully clearly determined to bring the fight to the human invaders and lead the Na’vi to victory. But, if a mid-2000s audition had gone better, he could have had a very different career. In an interview on the Fitzy & Whippa podcast, Worthington explains that he auditioned to play James Bond in Casino Royale, though it didn’t exactly go to plan:
