Avengers: Endgame did as good a job as could it within its 3 hour runtime of wrapping up as many dangling threads from the past ten years of the MCU as possible, but there might’ve been a couple of loose ends that entered your head after leaving the theater. For instance, where the heck did Sharon Carter go? Last time we saw Agent 13, she shared a kiss with Steve Rogers, teasing a romance to come. But in Endgame, Steve elects to go back in time and stay with Peggy Carter (Sharon’s aunt).
It turns out that Sharon actually did feature in very early drafts of the script for the movie, but her role didn’t seem to last very long before it was excised due to being inessential to the plot. During a fascinating in-depth interview with Yahoo, writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus were asked about the various romantic relationships that didn’t get closure in Endgame and the latter revealed that the movie could’ve explained how Steve’s relationship with Sharon fell apart. “We had first drafts where Steve was living with Sharon Carter and it wasn’t going very well,” he said.
McFeely then chuckled as he remembered the idea, citing that it was likely Marvel Studio president Kevin Feige who ruled out the subplot for pacing reasons. “And those are the moments when Kevin comes in and goes ‘what the hell are you doing?'” the writer joked.
Unfortunately, the scribes don’t explain why the domestic situation between Steve and Sharon wasn’t going well but, given the decision Cap ultimately takes at the end of the movie, we can theorize that Rogers knew deep down that he was living with the wrong Carter and Peggy was the real love of his life.
In any case, while she might not’ve shown up in Avengers: Endgame, or Avengers: Infinity War before it, rumors suggest that Emily VanCamp could reprise her role in Disney Plus’ Falcon and Winter Soldier TV series. Hopefully that’ll provide an on-screen explanation for what happened to her and Steve.
