Fans are eagerly awaiting a definitive answer to Rey’s parentage in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, with many hoping that her mom or dad will link her into a known family. However, one recent rumor apparently revealed exactly that and it didn’t go down well with the fanbase.
Making Star Wars claimed that J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Episode IX will reveal that Rey’s actually Han Solo’s illegitimate daughter, born out of an affair he had while separated from Leia. It was said that this could be the seed of the reason for why Ben Solo AKA Kylo Ren has such hatred for his father and why he has such a complicated dynamic with Rey.
It doesn’t seem like many are into this explanation, however, as Reddit has been ablaze with fans lambasting the supposed plot point as ruining Han’s character. MSW’s rumor was shared on the site by user SorryNotSpartacus, with another 1000 commenters discussing their thoughts about it – and most of them are angry.
One person felt that it’d be a particularly lousy thing to retcon Han as having cheated on his wife when he died back in The Force Awakens in a tragic, heroic way.
Making a dead Han Solo be involved in an affair during his relationship with the woman he’s loved for god knows how long? An affair that results in the creation of our main character? Sounds like a pretty bad thing to do imo. :/
Another believes it would be a total slap in the face of the loving relationship Leia and Han have been depicted as having ever since the Original Trilogy. Even when they were separated in TFA.
Yes. I’m not even sure I could watch a movie that destroyed Han so severely. Sure he started out a single minded rogue in the OT but by ROTJ he was in love and changed. I could buy him going back to smuggling but even the scenes in TFA show that he still loved his wife dearly. I’m hoping this doesn’t make it in the movie.
Alternatively, it would be a dumb move because it wouldn’t even solve the question of why Rey’s so gifted with the Force, as she wouldn’t be from the Skywalker lineage.
I really don’t like this explanation. The idea of Han cheating on Leia following their marriage still really irks me the wrong way. It also fails to biologically explain how Rey came upon her force powers other then the force chose her, which is exactly the same as what we’re getting now; therefore, this whole bit would be pointless. I’m really hoping this is a red herring.
One Redditor couldn’t resist taking a dig at the recent controversial final season of Game of Thrones, whose creators will soon be making their own Star Wars trilogy.
This sounds like something Benioff and Weiss would do write.
There’s one thing you can say about this theory, though: It’s united the SW fandom like nothing has before.
Impressive. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this fandom in near-universal agreement about anything ever. The hatred towards this idea has managed to unite us all. Well done.
There are very, very few things that could ruin the whole saga for me. This would be one of them. It goes well beyond the sequel trilogy and undoes a lot of the core character development of the OT.
The good news is that Lucasfilm’s Pablo Hildalgo may have proven this rumor wrong, as he pointed out that it’s a fact that Han and Leia only split up five years prior to TFA. So, Han having Rey with another woman 20 years previously just doesn’t add up.
In any case, the truth will be revealed when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th.
