Captain Marvel’s Success May Mean We Get An All-Female Avengers Movie

They said it would be Marvel Studios’ first outright flop. They said audiences would be turned off by a feminist superhero. They said that there was ‘panic’ inside Disney at the state of the movie. I am, of course. talking about Captain Marvel, which has gone on to utterly silence its many online naysayers by making more than a billion dollars and becoming the 25th highest grossing film of all-time. Now, it’s looking like that runaway success may light a fire under the long-proposed all-female Avengers spinoff.

The project would unite all of Marvel’s female big hitters, bringing together Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, Karen Gillan’s Nebula and Letitia Wright’s Shuri. Hell, why not throw in Mantis, the Wasp and Okoye while you’re at it, too?

Gillan recently recounted how she and her co-stars have all but demanded this movie be put into production, saying:

“Brie Larson was like, ‘We should go up to Kevin Feige and tell him to make an all-female Marvel movie,’ so we marched up there in a group, a whole herd of us, and said that to him.”

Evangeline Lilly was similarly effusive about the pic’s prospects, saying:

“I think I’m being a bit old fashioned and maybe a little bit rigid about this, because if it is an all-female Avengers film, then the sky’s the limit. We can reinvent the wheel. We don’t have to do anything that anyone’s ever done before. We can just make it all up and change the game.”

All this sounds pretty good to me. My only hope is that they don’t pull any punches, and that it doesn’t turn into another 2016 Ghostbusters – both in the amount of online venom it causes and in the general quality of the movie. While we wait to see if this actually becomes a reality, though, you can catch most of your favorite female heroes again in Avengers: Endgame, out this Friday.
