Even though we’ve been spoiled by the likes of IT and Halloween (2018) in the past few years, it’s actually Sinister that remains my favorite horror flick released in our current decade. Not only was I drawn in by the sharply dressed Bughuul and his love for making home videos, but I absolutely loved the music included. In short, the picture delivered on multiple levels, at least in my view.
Unfortunately, its successor, Sinister 2, made $25 million less than its predecessor at the worldwide box office. As a result, a threequel is no longer on the table. Still, it’s worth mentioning that Blumhouse had been considering crossing over the franchise with Insidious. But given late developments, it looks like that won’t be happening, either.
During a recent Twitter Q & A, Jason Blum himself was asked by a fan if Sinister 3 was somehow still a possibility at the studio. And though he replied with an unfortunate “nope,” his response to someone else who rephrased the question is sure to raise a few eyebrows. Here’s what Blum had to say when asked if Bughuul is returning to the big screen:
“I was thinking small screen. Maybe.”
Taking that at face value, my first assumption is that a Sinister TV series may have been discussed in some manner. Given Bughuul’s vague history and the realization that he’s been corrupting children for thousands of years, there’s certainly plenty of room to explore the possibilities. In fact, this wouldn’t be the first Blumhouse property to get serialized, as The Purge did so not long ago.
If not a TV show, then maybe the term “small screen” could also be applied to an entry in the franchise that won’t be released in theaters. In most cases we refer to these as being “direct-to-video,” but networks such as SyFy can often serve as the means of a world premiere. Take Sharknado, for instance.
Tell us, would you like to see Sinister continue on with a threequel or as a TV series? Or do you have no preference and just hope that it lives on in some form? Sound off in the usual place below!
