X-Men Producer Wanted To Make An X-Women Movie

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner has been involved in the X-Men film series right from the start, having helped guide the cinematic universe through some varied, sometimes risky territory over the years. But with the producer set to walk away from the property as Disney takes the reins, it seems there’s at least one more project that she wishes she’d been able to make.

Speaking to Decider at the Television Critics Association’s 2019 winter tour, Donner mentioned that she wanted to make an X-Men movie led by female mutants:

“I frankly wanted to see an X-Women movie. I didn’t get it through. But I think that would be cool. I think — not to have no guys in it, you have to have guys in it — but to make instead of Charles and Magneto at the helm it’ll be whomever. Kitty Pryde and Illyana [Rasputin]. Something like that.”

Regardless, it seems that “X-Women” will be just one more idea that Fox will never be able to bring to the screen. Indeed, a report from last month listed a series of previously planned projects – from Gambit to Doctor Doom to Kitty Pryde – that had allegedly been scrapped as the franchise transitions over to Disney. And while Donner herself has since clarified that it’s really up to the Mouse House whether these film still get made, you can imagine that Marvel Studios will have plans of their own for many of these characters.

At the same time, we certainly can’t rule out the possibility of Kevin Feige some day giving the go-ahead to an all-female X-Men flick. After all, the producer himself mentioned last year that he believes the majority of superheroes in the MCU will soon be female. What’s more, we’re already seeing these words being put into action with the release of the franchise’s first female solo movie Captain Marvel, which is set to be followed next year by a Black Widow film.

In any case, it’ll likely be at least a few months before we get some official clarification on Disney’s plans for X-Men, but in the meantime, Donner’s female-led Dark Phoenix is set to hit theaters on June 7th, 2019.
