Rian Johnson Reportedly Walks Away From His Star Wars Trilogy

Rian Johnson is not one to rest on his laurels.

After The Last Jedi and its billion-dollar success story at the box office, it’d be perfectly understandable if the director wanted to take a break from blockbuster movies, considering how much of a time commitment they are. But Johnson had other plans, and so too did Lucasfilm.

Yes, as you’ve surely heard, the director’s supposed to be working with the studio on a totally new Star Wars trilogy set to feature original characters and therefore remain independent from that other trilogy in the works that’s coming to us from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the current showrunners behind HBO’s Game of Thrones. But that’s just it.

You see, while the movies from Weiss and Benioff are locked in and confirmed at this point, there’s always been a sense of doubt in regards to Johnson’s films and now, it seems that there was a good reason for that, as just like the rumors told us last year, the director’s trilogy has been cancelled.

According to SuperBroMovies, who’ve spoken to multiple sources, Johnson is no longer developing the pics and has walked away from Lucasfilm to focus on other projects of his. An exact reason for why he departed wasn’t given, and the studio hasn’t commented on the situation yet – and probably won’t for a while – but it’s thought that the backlash to The Last Jedi has them feeling a bit uneasy about handing Johnson three more movies to make.

Alternatively, it’s possible that Rian just didn’t want to have to deal with all the hate online that he’s had to put up with for well over a year now and so, has decided to walk away from the franchise completely. Whatever the case might be, it’s not like he doesn’t have anything else to work on.

Currently, he’s putting together Knives Out, which surprisingly isn’t a movie about the backlash he received for Star Wars: The Last Jedi but is instead a crime drama starring Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon and Jamie Lee Curtis.
