Mortal Kombat Animated Movie Reportedly In Development

For some time now, the animation division over at Warner Bros. has earned much respect by churning out one fantastic DC Comics-based movie after another. But soon enough, believe it or not, they’ll likely be given a shot at adapting one of the most beloved franchises in gaming history: Mortal Kombat.

Actually, this shouldn’t come as a shock since WB now owns the studio developing that series, NetherRealm, not to mention how that same team also puts together the Injustice games. If you’re unfamiliar with those, they’re kind of like Mortal Kombat titles starring DC heroes and villains, though that’s an admitted oversimplification.

Being someone who’s enjoyed dishing out Fatalities (but not Babalities) since the early 1990’s, I’m quite thrilled to hear the wheels have begun turning on this one because, let’s be honest, a live action reboot isn’t happening anytime soon.

At this time, no plot synopsis has been given, but Revenge of the Fans have gotten their hands on the voice cast list:

  • Darin DePaul
  • Fred Tatasciore
  • Grey Griffin
  • Ike Amadi
  • Kevin Michael Richardson
  • Patrick Seitz
  • Robin Atkin Downes
  • Steve Blum
  • Jordan Rodrigues
  • Joel McHale
  • Jennifer Carpenter

Mortal Kombat

Unfortunately, which characters those folks will play remains unknown, though it’s fair to assume that Steve Blum and Patrick Seitz will voice Sub-Zero and Scorpion, respectively, because they’ve done so in recent video games.

Should this project find favor with the fanbase, I’m guessing it’ll finally gloss over Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins. Odds are you’re unfamiliar with that one, but it was a direct-to-video feature released in 1995 boasting cheap, repetitive animation, never to be re-issued on any format following VHS. It’s almost as if people want us to forget it exists! Though it can still be found on YouTube…

If I were to hazard a guess, this new Mortal Kombat will find its way to Blu-ray in either 2020 or 2021. Stay tuned as more develops.
