A new piece from Deadline assesses the female-heavy future of superhero cinema, and amidst the various insights on DC and Marvel’s current plans is the mention of Zatanna as one of the characters in line to get her own standalone outing.
Though the article offers few details of what’s in store for this magician and occasional Justice League member, it seems that talks have been happening at Warner Bros. to give this heroine her own movie. For those unfamiliar, Zatanna is a descendant of Leonard da Vinci in the comics who works as a successful stage magician before she happens to develops some actual powers while investigating the mysterious disappearance of her father, Giovanni Zatara.
With Supergirl and Batgirl also said to have projects in the works, it seems that the success of last year’s Wonder Woman has opened the floodgates at Warner for female superhero films. In fact, DC is already looking to be the first franchise to release two female-led comic book movies in a single year, with Wonder Woman 1984 and Birds of Prey both scheduled for release in 2020.
The Deadline report comes on the heels of the yesterday’s announcement that Blue Beetle has a film in development at DC. Focusing on the Jaime Reyes version of the character, the Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer-penned picture is set to be the first major superhero movie led by a Latino character. Evidently, the bosses at Marvel Studios aren’t the only ones aiming to offer more diverse representation in their superhero output.
Anyway, though this Zatanna flick looks to be a long way off from arriving in theaters, it’s nice to see some further evidence that Warner is starting to take chances on some of DC’s less familiar figures. Stay tuned for further details.
