Marvel And Sony Clashed Over Spider-Man: Far From Home Spoiling Avengers: Endgame

The partnership between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures has proven to be a fruitful one, with former Sony head and Spider-Man: Homecoming producer Amy Pascal recently hinting that she’d like to keep their deal going a while longer. Nonetheless, throughout their time collaborating on some major franchise releases, it was inevitable that there’d be some disagreements between the two companies, with Vanity Fair recently reporting that the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home was the subject of one such clash.

After Avengers: Infinity War famously saw Tom Holland’s Peter Parker turn to dust, it could be argued that the very existence of Far From Home is a spoiler in itself for Avengers: Endgame, since the announcement of Spidey’s next outing pretty much confirms that we’ll be seeing his sad fate reversed in the Russo Brothers’ upcoming film. As it turns out, Marvel Studios was very aware of this, but Sony insisted that a Homecoming sequel be released next year, with Vanity Fair explaining the situation as follows:

“[T]he union hasn’t come without its sticky complications: Sony’s insistence that Holland’s second stand-alone film, Far From Home, be released in 2019 threw a wrench in Marvel’s preferred degree of secrecy around Avengers: Endgame, for instance.”

While it’s been argued previously that Far From Home could still be a prequel to Infinity War, both Pascal and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige have mentioned in the past that the film will follow on from the events of Endgame.

Nonetheless, with all the future projects confirmed for the likes of Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Scarlet Witch, it would’ve been pretty obvious to those paying attention that the Decimation victims were coming back even without another Spider-Man flick in the works. With that in mind, it’s pretty hard to hold anything against Sony for not wanting to delay their project just to satisfy Marvel’s spoilerphobia.

In any case, we’ll find out how Peter makes his comeback when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th, 2019, before Spider-Man: Far From Home arrives on July 5th.
