Though Marvel Studios is still keeping their cards fairly close to their chest when it comes to the content of the MCU’s Phase 4, we’re slowly starting to piece together a picture of what these next few years will look like, and THR certainly helped matters when they reported that Scott Derrickson is on board to helm Doctor Strange 2.
As well as confirming that the Doctor Strange helmsman will be back for the sequel – along with stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong – the new piece also mentions that Marvel is planning to start production on the film in 2020, with a potential release in May 2021. And while this slot doesn’t seem set in stone just yet, fans have already picked up that the news lines up nicely with a report from several months ago saying that Disney has marked an untitled Marvel movie for release on May 7th of the same year.
If everything goes as expected, then this would make Doctor Strange 2 the fifth release of Marvel’s Phase 4, the first being next year’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, which comes out on July 5th. After that, the next two slots are for May 1st, 2020, and November 6th of the same year, and if the rumors from a couple of months ago are anything to go by, then these dates are meant for Black Widow and The Eternals, respectively. The next release is scheduled to come on February 12th, 2021, and while it’s unclear what’s intended to fill this space, perhaps fans looking forward to Black Panther 2 should be feeling optimistic.
Regardless of what schedule the studio settles on, it certainly looks like there’ll be a lot of MCU films coming our way before Doctor Strange 2 lands in theaters. But with Avengers: Endgame due for release on April 26th, 2019, it’s probably only a matter of months before we see the Sorcerer Supreme on our screens again.
