According to reports in the Italian press, Marvel Studios are heading to Italy for another shoot very soon. They seem to enjoy filming in the country, too, having shot scenes for Avengers: Age of Ultron in the Fortress of Bard in the Val d’Aosta and reportedly making use of Venice’s iconic architecture and canals for an action sequence in the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home (hopefully we’ll get a peek at this in the incoming trailer).
Badtaste.it are now reporting that they’re heading to Piedmont to shoot around the castle and historic centre of Racconigi in the province of Cuneo. The description of the scenes that’ve been released translates to “the story will be set during World War I, centering around a huge attack on the city of Sarajevo.” With that in mind, the burning question remains: what film will this be for?
I think Black Widow, The Eternals and Shang-Chi are the only candidates it could be, though I think the latter is too early in production for any location scouting. These scenes could theoretically make sense for a flashback to the history of the Romanoff family in Europe, but that’s a bit of a stretch, as I don’t think it’s been established that the character knows or cares who her birth parents were, as she was raised in the KGB’s Red Room facility. That leaves The Eternals as the most likely choice, then.
As the film’s rumored to be centered around Sersi, who was born in ancient Greece and has survived throughout humanity’s history, maybe we’ll get to see her living as an immortal through the ages, battling her way to the modern day through a variety of timelines. I don’t quite imagine Marvel Studios making a strict period piece set during the Great War, but the events that take place here could still inform what’s to come in the modern day.
