Guardians Of The Galaxy’s John C. Reilly Unsure If He’ll Return To The MCU

The future of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the MCU has been cast into doubt ever since director James Gunn was removed from GotG Vol. 3 over the summer due to a Twitter controversy and all work on the movie was suspended for the foreseeable future. That said, Chris Pratt and co. can likely sleep easy that they still have jobs and will eventually return as the cosmic heroes in time. For the supporting players of the franchise, though, well, it’s another story.

John C. Reilly, for instance, plays Nova Corpsman Rhomann Dey, the friendly Xandarian space chop who aided the gang in defeating Ronan in the first Guardians. There’s always a chance that the character could’ve shown up in the third movie but, since it’s not going anywhere right now, Reilly has no idea if or when he’ll get the chance to return to the Marvel world.

“I don’t know. I’m surprised they decided not to make a third Guardians, but, yeah. I’m not sure! Marvel certainly doesn’t tell me what’s going on in the Marvel Universe. I was just lucky enough to get that job in the first place. It kind of ticked a box for me, you know? ‘Get to be a guy who’s in outer space,’ that’s a pretty cool thing to be able to do.”

On the one hand, Reilly might not be needed back, as Dey could have died off-screen. After all, Avengers: Infinity War revealed that Thanos had decimated Xandar and destroyed the Nova Corps to get to the Power Stone. However, some have theorized that Dey might have been the only one to have survived as, in the comics, the character passes on his Nova powers to human hero Richard Rider AKA Nova. A Nova movie has been rumored, too, so who knows if Reilly will get the opportunity to play “a guy from outer space” once again.

In the meantime, we’ve heard that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won’t be heading into production until 2021, with a shortlist of female directors already having been drawn up to replace Gunn. We’ll keep you updated when more comes in, but tell us, would you like to see Reilly back in the MCU? Sound off in the usual place below.
