Chris Evans Reveals What Appeals To Him The Most About Playing Captain America

Though Captain America has proven to be one of the most popular players in the MCU, there was always the risk that viewers would fail to connect with such a principled do-gooder, especially back in the early 2010s when audiences were still yearning for dark and moody superheroes of the Christopher Nolan variety. Nonetheless, it seems that this righteous streak remains Steve Rogers’ most appealing quality to the man who’s been playing him for these last eight years.

In the new book Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years, actor Chris Evans is asked what interests him the most about playing Cap, prompting the star to reflect on the character’s early days in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger.

“Steve Rogers is a man who wants very much to do good and serve his country in World War II,” Evans explains. “but he’s been rejected from the Army for having asthma and other health challenges.”

Evans goes on to recall the character’s formative journey, observing how Steve was first granted his Super Soldier abilities because of his moral integrity and willingness to help.

“He is injected with a serum that turns him into Captain America – and Dr. Erskine knows Steve won’t take advantage of the gift of power and will always protect the weak.”

Since this first installment in the Steve Rogers saga, the character has remained at the heart of the MCU, though with Avengers 4 set to bring the franchise’s Phase 3 to a close, it’s a popular prediction right now that the Avengers: Infinity War sequel will serve as Evans’ final film in the role.

This raises the question of who, if anyone, might inherit the Captain America title, and while Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson have often been singled out as candidates, the fact that these two friends of Steve’s are pairing up for their own TV show arguably casts doubt on them taking the mantle next. And while Frank Grillo recently relayed rumors that the next hero to pick up the shield could be black or female, the star of Captain America: The Winter Soldier has been known for his unreliable intel as of late.

In any case, if Marvel Studios does in fact have a new Captain America lined up, there’s a good chance that we’ll find out about it when Avengers 4 comes out on May 3rd, 2019.
