Bill Hader Says It: Chapter Two Is Surprisingly Emotional

Andy Muschietti’s first It movie was as much a coming-of-age film about the real-world horrors of growing up as it was a supernatural spooker about a shape-shifting clown, and it looks like this emotional core is going to be carried forward to the highly anticipated It: Chapter Two.

SNL regular Bill Hader will be taking the reigns from Finn Wolfhard as the adult version of Richie Tozier, and when the star spoke to IndieWire about the sequel, he stressed how the upcoming horror flick is harboring a sensitive side:

“It’s really great. It’s very emotional. The cast is amazing… It’s really scary obviously, but I was surprised at how emotional it was. It’s really a story about these people and this kind of trauma that they all went through.”

Hader’s statement echoes writer Gary Dauberman when he made the similar claim a couple of months ago that the movie’s ending “will satisfy the audience and maybe break their hearts a little bit.” But if your worried that this next film could be watering down the twisted spirit of the source material, the scribe has also assured us that he’ll be bringing some of the more bizarre content from Stephen King’s novel to the screen.

In any case, filming has now officially wrapped on next year’s feature, and to mark this occasion, Hader’s teenage equivalent Wolfhard had a sentimental moment of his own, sharing a cast photo of the young Losers’ Club just yesterday on Instagram. With the movie taking the action forward 27 years to 2016, the primary focus looks to be on series newcomers like Hader, Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy, but you can expect the ‘80s kids to still have some presence in the sequel, and there’s a good chance that this childhood connection is how the film plans to hit its viewers right in the feels.

We’ll see if It: Chapter Two is as scary or as heartbreaking as the team behind it claims when the feature hits theaters on September 6th, 2019.
