All hell breaks loose in today’s new teaser trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, Warner and David Yates’ magical sequel that’s about to plunge Newt Scamander into 1920s Paris, where he must seek out some new allies in order to thwart the growing threat of Grindelwald and his fascist ways.
Doing so will require a little help from Albus Dumbledore, arguably one of the most popular Potter characters and a fitting mentor to the young, untrained Newt Scamander. By the time The Crimes of Grindelwald begins, Jude Law’s wizarding titan is still holding his place as Hogwarts’ Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, and looks out on his students over those iconic half-moon spectacles.
There is still one point of contention, though. Leading up to release, Dumbledore’s sexuality has consistently made the headlines, with director David Yates stating that his fantastical sequel will largely overlook what is undoubtedly a crucial characteristic for the would-be Hogwarts headmaster.
Since then, Yates has elaborated on the issue, before ensuring fans that The Crimes of Grindelwald will at the very least allude to Dumbledore’s sexuality. Which is better than nothing, I suppose, even if it marks another missed opportunity for equal representation.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald zooms into theaters on November 16th and will expand Warner’s Wizarding World that little bit more. There’s still plenty more to come, of course, what with another three Fantastic Beasts movies cramming up the pipeline between now and 2021.
It seems the brewing war between the wizarding and non-wizarding worlds has only just begun…
