In the world of social media, where the craziest and most unreasonable of opinions can get international exposure, sometimes it can be hard to pick up on a user’s jokey tone from their written words alone. Perhaps that’s one reason why so many fans have yet to work out that directors Anthony and Joe Russo have not actually fired Mark Ruffalo from Avengers 4.
Earlier this month, the star publicly admitted that he accidentally dropped some major spoilers on the Avengers: Infinity War sequel during his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, prompting the Russo Brothers to tweet him the message, “Mark, you’re fired.” It was a joke that the filmmaking pair recently continued when they sent the Hulk actor a reminder that he’s “still fired.”
While this crushing fake news left Ruffalo speechless, plenty of fans were all too ready to get mad on Bruce Banner’s behalf, and while you might be willing to give some of these users the benefit of the doubt, it’s clear that not everybody has grasped that this online back-and-forth is all meant in good fun.
@MarkRuffalo they really fired you for that crap, that's such bull. What the hell. Do they not pay attantion to how much Holland almost slipped up and has, but yet 1 mistake for you and they fire you? That's screwed up

This is literally impossible. Marvel is going to lose millions of dollars by firing you. You’re the best hulk that there is and firing you over something so petty is childish.

No no, they can’t fire you, you ARE the hulk, the BEST hulk ever, tell them that
— Kelly (@KellywWilliams3) October 17, 2018
You’re still petty, Russo’s.

Though the episode of Fallon aired with the spoiler bleeped out, audio-savvy Marvel fans have since uncovered that the actor referred to Avengers 4 as The Last Avenger. The legitimacy of this ‘spoiler,’ however, remains up for debate, with the rumored name of Avengers: Annihilation getting a lot more traction in some online circles. When exactly the title will have its official unveiling is unclear for the time being, but with the highly anticipated trailer expected to drop in the next month or two, there’s a good chance that the two major reveals will arrive simultaneously.
There’s still much to be learned about Avengers 4, but at least two things are clear: the film will be hitting theaters on May 3rd, 2019, and Mark Ruffalo has absolutely not been fired.
