MCU Actor Says The Next Captain America May Be Black Or Female

Is it too much of a stretch to say that Avengers 4 is the biggest Hollywood film currently in production? Probably not, but all we can confirm at the moment is that when Joe and Anthony Russo’s untitled sequel does hit theaters, it’ll completely upend the MCU as we know it.

For instance, Captain America star Chris Evans is confident that Avengers 4 will deliver on those sky high expectations when it finally arrives, and though that remains to be seen, one thing we do know is that the movie will very likely be the actor’s final appearance in the MCU. That hasn’t been 100% confirmed just yet, but it seems that Marvel is already on the search for their next Cap. Or at least, that’s according to Frank Grillo.

While speaking with Larry King, the actor – who played Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – revealed that from what he’s heard, the studio may choose an African American or perhaps even a female to take up the mantle after Evans is gone.

“I don’t know, but there’ve been rumors that [the next] Captain America could be African American. It could be a woman. You know? So they’re looking.”

First and foremost, what’s perhaps most interesting about this is that Grillo seemingly confirms that yes, Steve Rogers will be leaving the MCU following Avengers 4. Granted, we all kind of assumed that’d be the case, but with Chris Evans playing coy and Marvel obviously not confirming or denying anything, we weren’t 100% sure that the character would be making an exit next year. Now, however, it looks like we have our answer.

And as for who may take up the mantle after he’s gone, well, if they decide to go the African-American route, the Falcon (Anthony Mackie) is obviously the best choice. I mean, it happened in the comics and he’s a popular pick – along with Bucky – for who fans want to see become Captain America following Rogers’ departure.

All that being said, it’s possible that Grillo simply got his wires crossed or is just speculating here, so we wouldn’t take his word as gospel quite yet. Still, it’s intriguing to think about and you can be sure that whoever ends up taking Steve’s place in the MCU, it’s going to be mighty emotional saying goodbye to him when the Infinity War sequel arrives in May.
