Just today, a report started making the rounds that the bulk of directors being eyed for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are female, and now we’re getting word from SuperBroMovies of some of the names up for consideration.
One of the most famous filmmakers on this list is Jane Campion, creator of the acclaimed series Top of the Lake and director of 1993’s Academy Award-winning The Piano. For a talent you’d more closely associate with franchise fare, however, there’s also S.J. Clarkson, whose résumé includes episodes of Jessica Jones, as well as the upcoming Star Trek 4. In other words, she’s a stranger to neither Marvel nor space travel.
Also on the list is Dee Rees, who’s been earning plaudits this decade for dramas like Mudbound and Pariah, and has recently been working with the likes of Anne Hathaway, Willem Dafoe, and Ben Affleck on her next film The Last Thing He Wanted. Rees has previously claimed to be a big fan of Black Panther, so it’s not unthinkable that she’s now looking to make her own mark in this cinematic universe. Michelle MacLaren, meanwhile, is a listed name best known for her work on TV shows like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and The X-Files.
Though we have no official confirmation that any of these filmmakers are being considered to take over the project, this wouldn’t be a bad list for Disney to choose from. What’s more, with Marvel Studios previously voicing their commitment to bring more female directors on board, it’s pretty plausible that the team would be using the vacancy left by James Gunn as an opportunity to follow through on this commitment.
All that being said, whoever ends up landing this spot might not be able to get to work for quite some time, with another recent report alleging that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 isn’t scheduled to begin production until 2021.
