The internet’s week-long pre-mourning of Steve Rogers continues, as actor Chris Evans offered a brief but earnest response to a message from his Avengers 4 co-star Robert Downey Jr.
To recap, earlier this week Evans tweeted a message announcing that he had finished his scenes for next year’s Avengers: Infinity War sequel, while indicating that this would be the final film in his eight-year run as Captain America. Since then, the tweet has prompted a wave of heartfelt responses from Marvel fans thanking Evans for his contributions to the series, and among these sentimental well-wishers was Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr.
After the actor known for playing Tony Stark uploaded an image (below) that likened the Iron Man and Captain America pairing to Buzz Lightyear and Woody from Toy Story, Evans offered a concise and very Rogers-esque response: “This guy….”
Downey Jr. isn’t the only Hollywood action star to bid farewell to Cap, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Ryan Reynolds also commending Evans for his work in these last few days. At the moment, it’s unclear what the future holds for either Evans or his most famous character, but you can bet that Avengers 4 has one emotional finale lined up for Steve Rogers, whether it’s a heroic death or a quiet retirement.
While Chris Evans’ tweet has clearly sent ripples through the Marvel fanbase, another Phase 1 Avenger may have had an even more talked-about, if somewhat less dignified week. On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Mark Ruffalo seemingly dropped a major spoiler when he told audiences the title of Avengers 4. While the announcement was censored on the broadcasted episode, it has since been discovered that the name he divulged was The Last Avenger, which would serve as a neat bookend to Steve’s debut in Captain America: The First Avenger.
Though we’re still waiting to hear official confirmation on that title, it’s clear that we’ll being seeing the ‘last’ of a lot of things when Avengers 4 comes out on May 3rd, 2019.
