Ever since it was first announced that Joaquin Phoenix would be starring as the Clown Prince of Crime in the upcoming Joker movie, fans have been keen to offer their own menacing interpretations of how the renowned actor could look in the trademark makeup. What’s more, now that we’ve actually seen our first footage of Phoenix in full Joker mode, some artists are taking this less as a sign to stop speculating and more as an opportunity to create even more foreboding imagery.
Just take this new artwork from BossLogic for example, which takes the teaser trailer’s fleeting shot of Phoenix in clown-face and makes it that much darker. While the official footage saw Arthur Fleck smiling in a way that you could almost mistake for friendly, this fresh reworking gives Phoenix a much graver expression. Perhaps taking inspiration from The Dark Knight, the Joker makeup is also given a few smudges and cracks, while the red painted eyebrows are no longer visible.
It’s hard to say at this point how Phoenix’s Joker will differ from the many live action versions we’ve already seen on the big and small screens, but a lot of fans seem pretty content with the overall look of the character. From the sound of things, you can expect this to be a grittier, more down-to-Earth, and character-based outing than your average comic book flick. Taking place in a separate timeline from the DCEU, where Jared Leto still holds onto the Joker title, the movie will hopefully benefit from the creative freedom of a work that doesn’t have to function as one piece in a larger franchise.
