Is the threat of AI real or overblown? Craig Mazin and Jason Blum spar over contentious strike issue

Screenwriter Craig Mazin and CEO of Blumhouse Productions Jason Blum sat down to discuss the ongoing strikes and the perceived threat of AI in the industry.

The pair appeared alongside The Matrix co-director, Lilly Wachowski, on the Deadline Strike Talk Podcast which has been covering the writers’ strike since it began over three months ago. The three guest are all pretty experienced within the industry and they bring their own unique takes on the issue.

When asked about whether the WGA are overreaching with their demands, Blum — who’s company is known for highly praised horror films such as The Black Phone and Insidious — pointed to the use of AI. He argues it isn’t as big of an issue as it’s being made out to be. His opinion may be controversial, but he does make some good points about the WGA’s demands regarding the use of the technology:

“The AI thing is in my mind super overblown and everybody is frantic about something that we don’t really understand […] I don’t think you’re doing anyone any favors forcing people to hire people they’re not going to use, I think the worst person who suffers from that is the person who has the job because they’re in a job that no-one wants them to have”

Blum states that he supports the artists behind the strike although he seems to be more on the fence regarding the use of AI. He’s right in the sense that we don’t fully understand AI just yet, should we limit usage of it before we even know it’s full potential? Should studios favor hiring people who may not be needed in order simply to avoid the controversy of looking like they’re taking jobs from the artist?

Of course, Blum’s mindset is that of a producer. Mazin, known for the HBO series, Chernobyl and The Last of Us, has a different take on the matter which makes sense, considering he is a screenwriter, someone whose livelihood could possibly be under threat from the emergence of AI.

“If AI can do the things that I do, […] they’re just gonna get rid of us. But I would say the same thing to the companies which is, ‘guys, if in five years you can have a Craig bot then this doesn’t matter, just give them what they want because, guess what, none of us are gonna be here, there’s not gonna be a writers guild and you’re not gonna be here either.’”

Mazin’s view is more black and white, he believes that if studios continue to use AI then before long there will be no jobs at all in the industry, including the jobs of the studio executives and producers.

“My advice to the studios on that one is just shut up, shut up and just give them what they want because either this replaces us all, or we’re all gonna be laughing about it five years from now.”

Hopefully the outcome of these strikes brings about the latter of Mazin’s two scenarios.

Multiversal expert Doctor Strange finds himself at the center of the fandom’s confusing canonical storm

The lore of the MCU is ever expanding, and as such, it gets harder and harder to keep it consistent and tangible. We all remember the iconic moment in Infinity War when the Sorcerer Supreme looks into 14,000,605 possible outcomes from the Avengers’ showdown with Thanos, and grimly tells Stark that they only win in one. He must have just not got to the alternate timeline where they use the Ant-Man technique. Now, fans are wondering why Doctor Strange didn’t see an outcome similar to the one used by the Illuminati in Multiverse of Madness.

Since then, we’ve seen a couple of parallel universes where Thanos has been defeated, and quite easily might I add. One of these was featured in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as we saw the Illuminati beat Thanos without much fuss. Not only did they do it before he snapped his fingers, but they also won before he even left Titan. So if it was so easy for them, why could Strange only find one way of coming out on top?

This is what one fan has asked on the Marvel Studios subreddit, “Dr. Strange said there was no other way to defeat Thanos, but the alternative Avengers in MoM found another way, how does this work? Is an alternate universe different than an alternate timeline?” This started a discussion between fellow fans on the details of multiverses and alternate timelines.

Most of the explanations seem to provide an adequate reason for why Strange could only find one version of events where the team won the battle. Although there were some other pretty legitimate and hilarious answers.

“He found the one that won at 4:58, so he needed to clock out for the day before he could find a second. Avengers are union.”

Fair enough, good to know that the Avengers have a union, maybe we’ll see them on the picket lines alongside the writers and actors.

You may argue that the team doesn’t matter, the Darkhold is what was used to defeat Thanos, and Strange knew about it at the time. So was there no outcome where Strange was able to get that book and use it? Well, no, by the time he thought to look into the future, Stephen was already trapped on Titan with no way back home. Besides, he wouldn’t have known it’s whereabouts at the time.

“In the universe with the Illuminati the alternate Dr. Strange used the Darkhold to defeat Thanos, but in the movie MCU Agatha Harkness had it.”

On a separate thread, one fan theorized that Strange wasn’t just looking into alternate timelines, but was in fact timeslipping, a concept that has been introduced in Loki season 2.

If that were the case, then it would be a whole other debate, however, most agreed that the Doctor wasn’t timeslipping like the God of Mischief.

Although the second Doctor Strange movie does kind of make Stephen look like a fool for not realizing there was a very easy way to beat Thanos; his logic does seem to hold up. He had no access to the tools and weapons used by 838 Strange, he also had a different team, and by this point in the movie he was already trapped on an alien planet with limited resources.

Not every ‘Star Wars’ supporter is falling over themselves to see the live-action debut of the most-demanded character

In 2003 Bioware released Knights of the Old Republic on Xbox and PC, with it instantly being recognized as one of the greatest Star Wars video games of all time. Twenty years later and it’s still very much beloved, with a recent port arriving on Nintendo Switch and a full-on remake in some stage of development for PlayStation 5.

At the core of this story is the Sith Lord Darth Revan. The character is renowned as one of the most powerful Force users, has a satisfyingly complex backstory and there have long been calls for them to make the leap to live action.

That hasn’t yet happened (despite some Easter Eggs in various media) and now one fan has a great case for why Lucasfilm should abandon the idea. Now, this is slightly spoilery if you haven’t played Knights of the Old Republic, so if you care about the twist in a two-decade-old game maybe look away now:

“One of the big reasons why people enjoyed playing Revan so much is because it was an RPG and they were able to shape their own individual Revan. Think about all the different things you got to choose. Where they Light Side or Dark Side? Did they use one saber, duel wield, or a double bladed lightsaber? Did they ignore lightsabers all together? What gender were they? What armor/robes/masks did they use? Did they romance anyone? Which face did you choose? How did they get past the rancor in the sewers? Did they outwit the sith on Korriban or just go on a killing spree once they were done? Did they do all the speeder races? Etc etc.”

Yup, you play as an amnesiac Revan in Knights of the Old Republic, though you don’t discover this until late in the game. This means that each player’s memory of Revan will be based on the choices they made in the game, so boiling that down into a single character means nobody will see “their” Revan.

Replies agree this is a “lose/lose scenario” with a “slim chance of making most folks happy”. The best suggestion seems to be to tell a story set in the Knights of the Old Republic era but to portray the character as an enigmatic and mysterious figure that can match up with each individual person’s perception of them.

Disney and Lucasfilm are open to this kind of story, so here’s hoping it becomes a reality someday.

James Gunn reveals his first contact with Marvel Studios goes way further back than you might think

These days, James Gunn is sitting at the very peak of superhero cinema. After a barnstorming run of hits with Marvel Studios, he’s jumped ship to the distinguished competition. Gunn is now steering the future of the DC Universe on the big screen for Warner Bros. , with work beginning on the hotly anticipated Superman: Legacy.

But it wasn’t always this way. Over a decade ago, eyebrows were raised when Gunn was announced as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy. Before that, he’d directed two flops: Slither (now a cult classic) and Super, and was known for his screenplays for Dawn of the Dead and the Scooby-Doo movies.

Gunn has spent the weekend answering questions on Threads, and along the way revealed that Marvel Studios were interested in him way earlier than most had assumed:

James Gunn post
Image via Threads

This would have been around 2005-2006, when Gunn made a name for himself as a hot new screenwriter. Clearly, someone over at the studio was a really big fan of 2002’s Scooby-Doo and figured that Marvel Studios needed to tap that magic.

As it turned out, betting on Gunn paid off. The Guardians of the Galaxy movies have taken a little-loved superhero IP and turned it into a billion-dollar smash – just 10 years ago, the notion that obscure Marvel characters like Rocket Raccoon or Groot could be up there with Captain America and Iron Man in terms of popularity would have sounded absurd.

But here we are, and no doubt Warner Bros. will be hoping he’s going to sprinkle a little of that Gunn magic on the beleaguered DCU. Here’s hoping he does, though whatever he turns out has to be an improvement on The Flash, right?

‘Scream 7’ director reveals why he’s the perfect person for the job as he gives thanks for the dream horror gig

One thing that once marked out the Scream saga from other horror franchises is that all its films were directed by the same person, the one and only Wes Craven. Following Craven’s passing in 2015, then, it seemed for a long while there that the series couldn’t go on without him… Until Radio Silence came along and proved that Ghostface still had life in him yet with Scream (2022) and Scream VI. And now the keys to the kingdom are being handed over yet again for Scream 7.

With directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett too busy with a host of other projects, including a Universal horror reboot, it was confirmed this week that Christopher Landon will be taking over the reins for the saga’s seventh installment. Just a glimpse at his resume is enough to see why Landon is the best guy for the job, given that he’s already made four comedically flavored horror movies before (Freaky, We Have a Ghost, and the brilliant Happy Death Day duology).

However, in his thank-you speech reacting to the news on Twitter, Landon gave another reason why he’s so well-qualified for this position. It turns out he’s good friends with his “hero” Kevin Williamson, the one person who’s as much to do with Scream‘s success as Craven. Williamson scripted all but the third of the first four Screams and has been an exec producer on the fifth and sixth.

Image via Twitter

“Just a big-heart-felt thanks to all [Scream] fans for welcoming me into the fold. Horror has been my passion all my life,” Landon shared, before promising that he will honor the three previous directors to helm Scream movies and do them “proud.”

None of the cast has signed on to Scream 7 yet, which is unsurprising given the actors’ strike, but all four members of the current “Core Four” — Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown — are expected to reprise their roles for this closer to the 2020s trilogy.

A $190 million horror franchise in desperate need of a relaunch just got forced back in its grave a while longer thanks to ‘Scream 7’

Horror lovers have finally received the news they’d been eagerly awaiting since March with the announcement that, yes, Scream 7 is happening. It was hardly in doubt that the genre’s most persistently popular franchise was going to get to round out its current trilogy, but it’s still exciting for it be official. Even if the news means that we will have to wait even longer for hopes of a cult favorite slasher series getting the chance to reach number three.

The big surprise to do with the Scream 7 announcement is that Radio Silence filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will not be returning to conclude the trilogy they began with 2022’s Scream. Instead, Christopher Landon is stepping into their shoes. The choice could not be a better one as, apart from coming up through the Paranormal Activity movies, Landon’s four prior horror-comedy movies mark him out as the perfect person to steer the good ship Scream next.

happy-death-day-2u
via Blumhouse

The downside is, though, that we can practically kiss goodbye any hopes of seeing another Happy Death Day film materialize anytime soon. Before he helmed Netflix’s recent We Have a Ghost and the body-swap slasher Freaky, Landon brought us 2017’s Happy Death Day and 2019’s Happy Death Day 2U, a unique blend of a Groundhog Day-style time loop scenario and a Scream-esque whodunnit slasher mystery.

While HDD was a big hit for Blumhouse, unfortunately 2U failed to make as much of a splash so plans for a third film were halted, despite Landon writing a treatment for the third chapter alongside making the second. Nevertheless, Landon, producer Jason Blum, and star Jessica Rothe have routinely maintained their interest in continuing the story of Tree Gelbman ever since. But clearly if Landon is joining Scream, potentially even for multiple movies, then there’s no immediate plans for this to happen.

Happy Death Day is all about its protagonist coming back from the dead over and over, so there’s still hope for the franchise yet. For now, however, its loss is the Scream saga’s gain.

James Gunn secretly confirming Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman comeback months ago leaves DCU haters with egg on their faces

We’d just about got our heads around the SnyderVerse Justice League never returning again, and after the horrors of The Flash maybe that was a blessing, and then Gal Gadot goes and drops a mind-blowing bombshell in our laps. According to the Diana Prince star, she’s still all set to make Wonder Woman 3 over at James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios, despite the breaks seemingly being skidded on that franchise when Patty Jenkins parted ways with the execs over creative differences last December.

If we had been paying closer attention to Gunn’s Instagram comments, however, it turns out we wouldn’t be so surprised by this development. As one fan pointed out on the /DC_Cinematic subreddit, two replies Gunn has made to fans on social media have confirmed he’s been in talks with Gadot about a future for Wonder Woman in the DCU since the very beginning of his tenure in the big chair.

When answering a fan complaining about why he has wiped out the OG Justice League, Gunn clarified that “We didn’t let Gal go.” In another, the DC Studios co-CEO confirms, “Yes, we met with [Gadot] weeks ago.”

So, yes, while Henry Cavill’s Superman is definitely out, with David Corenswet’s Man of Steel flying in, apparently all those claims that Gunn was hell-bent on eradicating the SnyderVerse’s heroes more effectively than Darkseid have been somewhat blown out of proportion. Not that that’s stopped more cynical sorts from saying that they’ll only believe Gadot is sticking around the franchise when they see it.

Who knows, maybe Gadot is playing Lobo, not Jason Momoa?

With Superman: Legacy not kicking off the DCU until its release in July 2025, it naturally will be a long while before we can see Gadot back in her Amazonian armor as Wonder Woman. The good news is, though, according to the words of Gunn and Gadot themselves, this is something they’re working towards. Although you know some folks are going to trust rumors and conspiracy theories more than the actual people involved.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Disney Plus release is already succeeding where ‘Secret Invasion’ failed

Happy Disney Plus release day, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 fans! Coming one week after the Secret Invasion finale disappointed the entire MCU fandom, Marvel has supplied us with a much-needed pick-me-up with the streaming premiere of James Gunn’s recent cosmic threequel, which rounded out the epic arc of the galaxy’s defenders in style. While Guardians 3 opened to lukewarm reviews, leading it to be the lowest-rated of the trilogy on Rotten Tomatoes, its stature has only grown and grown since.

At this point, you’ll hardly find a fan speaking out against it online as Guardians 3 seems destined to go down as perhaps the most universally popular of any Multiverse Saga entry to date… and potentially ever, depending on how the next few years go. A glance at a Reddit discussion of the movie following its Disney Plus date shows how much love there is for the film out there, which comes in sharp contrast to the reception Secret Invasion‘s sixth episode received from the same community just days ago.

New viewers are finding themselves just as blown away by those who caught it on the big screen.

The weakest of the trilogy? It’s the best!

Screenshot via Reddit

Actually, screw that, it may just be the best MCU movie, period.

Screenshot via Reddit

The movie hits just as hard on Disney Plus for those who’ve already seen it too.

Screenshot via Reddit

Clearly, the fact Gunn was allowed full creative control on this one is a real plus. Whereas Secret Invasion director Ali Selim has admitted he was given specific instructions about the finale by Kevin Feige.

Screenshot via Reddit

Now Gunn’s hopped over to DC, do we have to wait until Black Panther 3 for another film of this caliber?

Screenshot via Reddit

Oh, and fair warning, folks, if you cried the first time around, you will cry again.

Screenshot via Reddit

While it would obviously have been unfair to have expected Secret Invasion to hit the same kind of dramatic heights as the closer to a trilogy we’d been following for almost a decade, just how much this movie engaged fans on an emotional level speaks volumes about the recent show’s total failure in drumming up a strong investment from the audience.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s continued success presents a couple of lessons for Marvel to learn from: don’t hamper your creatives with MCU world-building requirements and always put emotive storytelling first. Whether it takes these tips on board, though, remains to be seen.

Leaked production details on Jonathan Majors’ return as Kang may just confirm what Marvel experts have been expecting

Although Kang‘s reign of terror has really only just begun, and we have a lot left of the Multiverse Saga (for better or for worse) still to come, Marvel lovers can’t help but keep one eye on the not-so-distant future as the MCU barrels towards its next big crossover event movies, 2026’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars. At this point, it’s far too early for any plot details to come out, but perhaps the latest leak at least allows us to make one big inference that’ll please comic book readers.

Following Jonathan Majors’ role as Victor Timely in Loki season two, the next confirmed re-appearance for the MCU’s current big bad is these Avengers movies, but while Kang Dynasty isn’t quite ready to go before cameras just yet, we do now know the film and its sequel’s working titles. It’s been confirmed that Marvel’s codename for these highly spoilerphobic productions is “Apple Pie 1” and “Apple Pie 2.”

These working titles may seem totally innocuous, but they likely have ties to a Carl Sagan quote from his seminal Cosmos TV series: “If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.” In the context of Marvel, this likely refers to Kang the Conqueror’s aims to tear down the universe and rebuild it as he sees fit. In this way, then, the codenames may just offer our first clue as to how these films will draw from the source material.

secret wars
Image via Marvel Comics

In the original 1984 Secret Wars storyline, the Beyonder kidnapped various heroes from Earth and relocated them to Battleworld, a realm of his own creation, in order to force them to fight for his amusement. Meanwhile, in 2015’s event of the same name, a new Battleworld was introduced, this time being the merged vestiges of Earth-616 and Earth-1610 (aka the Ultimate universe) after the two realities are caught in an Incursion.

Going by these loaded “Apple Pie” titles, it seems likely that Kang will reshape reality to create a Battleworld of his own, one that’s perhaps made up of Earth-616 (or 99999) and other cinematic Marvel universes, allowing for crossovers galore. But, just like the best deserts, we’re going to have to wait to enjoy the calorific goodness of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.

Marvel’s most embarrassing timeline goof yet forces Disney Plus users to watch ‘Quantumania’ painfully early

Disney Plus is the hub for (practically) all things MCU, so the streaming platform’s handy-dandy ordering of every Marvel Studios movies in timeline order is a great aid for users looking to work their way through all the films in a way that best suits the ongoing narrative. Well, at least, it is in theory as, in actuality, Disney Plus’ MCU timeline is full of flaws. Trust us, there’s a much more accurate way to watch the MCU in chronological order.

To demonstrate how wayward the streamer’s watch order is, one subscriber took to the r/MarvelStudios sub to share a major goof they’d spotted. As the screenshot reveals, Disney Plus accidentally placed Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the opener to Phase Five, in the midst of Phase Three, bizarrely slotting it in between Black Panther and Spider-Man: Homecoming. I mean, I guess there could be something to getting Ant-Man 3 out of the way early, like an unwanted chore you can’t avoid, but that’s just ridiculous.

Screenshot via Reddit

To clarify why this placements makes so little sense, Black Panther and Spider-Man: Homecoming are set shortly after the events of Captain America: Civil War, which takes place in 2016. Quantumania, meanwhile, occurs long after The Blip is concluded in Avengers: Endgame, in 2025, almost a full decade later. Presumably, Ant-Man and the Wasp is supposed to be in this position instead, as that also takes place following Civil War.

An alternate MCU viewing order based on a qualitative system, that squeezes the franchise’s least-enjoyable entries among some of its very best to soften the blow, could actually be a good idea, but that’s probably not what Disney Plus was intending here. If Quantumania comes before Homecoming in the chronology, then Kang’s definitely been messing with the timeline again.
