‘Deadpool’ artist reveals Ryan Reynolds’s super dedication to poke fun at Hugh Jackman

Deadpool is an extremely aware superhero, so aware that he is actually able to see beyond his own cinematic universe into others and into our real world, often breaking the fourth wall to talk to the audience. One thing the merc with a mouth is a big fan of is making fun of Hugh Jackman and his superhero counterpart, Wolverine. Apparently, Reynolds was extremely dedicated to ensuring these jokes got into the film right from the get-go.

Reynolds and Jackman have been engaged in a lovable pseudo feud for some time now. It seemingly originated from when the actor first played Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine back in 2008, and it didn’t end there. This feud continued with the Deadpool movies and apparently, Reynolds is the reason behind it as storyboard artist, Jay Oliva has shared an image on Twitter to project how determined the Free Guy star was to make jokes at Jackman’s expense.

The image shows the storyboard artwork for a scene towards the end of the film, where Deadpool’s romantic interest lifts off his mask (à la Spider-Man), only to find he has stapled a picture of Jackman’s face to his own. They even used the same picture of Jackman in the film as they originally did in the storyboard.

Not only does Reynolds troll Jackman within the films, he constantly roasts X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a film which was panned by critics and fans. It saw a vastly different Deadpool, who is completely altered and has his mouth sealed shut as he goes up against Wolverine. In fact, this version is so detested that the superhero went full meta in his last outing as the merc with a mouth as he used Cable’s time travelling device to kill the Deadpool in the X-Men film.

Despite their friendship starting with a film Reynolds dislikes so much, the two Marvel actors have a lot of love for each other, with their barbs and jabs often turning into compliments and praise.

As evidenced above, the two put a lot of effort into their fake fights, and the internet loves it. In fact, director Shawn Levy, who directed Reynolds in The Adam Project, Free Guy and will be directing Deadpool 3, is determined to get the duo in a film together, so maybe we can see some of that chemistry on the big screen soon.

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ promo art includes a mustachioed Korg

There’s a lot to be excited about in Thor: Love and Thunder, but what MCU fans are looking forward to the most is being reunited with Taika Waititi’s affable rock monster Korg. Introduced in Thor: Ragnarok and then popping up again in Avengers: Endgame, the peek at him in the Love and Thunder trailer indicates he’ll be showing Thor the first victims of Gorr the God Butcher’s deicidal rampage.

Marvel Studios has further teased his highly awaited appearance with some newly released promo art, which shows off Korg’s dapper new look: he’s clad in barbarian-looking furry armor and sporting a perfectly groomed mustache. Check him out:

It’s unknown whether this promo art has made the leap to live-action, as audiences may wonder why a rock man has started growing hair. Then again, perhaps it’s simply a mossy growth, making it some kind of moss-tache.

Waititi clearly loves voicing Korg so one can expect him to continue playing the character in future MCU projects as well. One hint of a potential appearance came in the trailer reaction video for Free Guy, with Korg appearing alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. This was technically the merc with the mouth’s first MCU appearance, so if the two are friends, we can expect Korg to pop up in 2024’s Deadpool 3.

But first Korg has to survive the cataclysmic events of Love and Thunder. Jane Foster taking up Mjolnir will probably rattle some cages in the new Asgard, while everyone is busy cooking up plans against whatever dark plans Gorr has for the surviving Norse pantheon. Here’s hoping the God Butcher gets at least one stony punch to the kisser on the way.

The great James Bond casting debate begins after early contenders are named

No Time to Die was a fine swansong for Daniel Craig’s James Bond, who will go down in history as one of the most successful versions of the character. But with his tenure now finally at a (very conclusive) end, audiences are wondering who’s next in line to be awarded the coveted license to kill.

Variety recently run an interview with Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli, who confirmed that “it’s going to take some time” to find someone to fill Craig’s shoes. Speaking at the opening night of Macbeth on Broadway, she said:

“It’s a big decision. It’s not just casting a role. It’s about a whole rethink about where we’re going. I’m just here celebrating one of the greatest actors on the planet, Daniel Craig.”

But the article also cites a number of actors who “have been whispered about in relation to the coveted role.” Now it’s worth underlining that Variety’s article doesn’t confirm the names of the actors who are officially in the running to get the part. It merely lists some of the actors — Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill, Idris Elba and Jacob Elordi — who have been talked about as potential future James Bonds.

The first three are popular fan choices, though it’s highly unlikely that they would want to commit to the Bond franchise. While Henry Cavill is committed to multiple seasons of Netflix’s The Witcher, at 49 Idris Elba is probably now too old for the role. As for Tom Hardy, he has refused to share any comments on the possibility. Seeing that we have had multiple movies about a Bond at the end of his career, it is possible they’ll go with someone younger, so of these four actors, Elordi is the most plausible candidate.

Even though being agent 007 is an alluring prospect, playing this role requires a multi-year commitment, strict rules on how you conduct yourself professionally and socially, and ties you into a tonne of marketing campaigns. It’s telling that even with the dangling carrot of millions of dollars, Craig repeatedly tried to quit the franchise.

2022 is also the 60th anniversary of the debut Bond film Dr. No, so chances are good we’ll see an official announcement in early October. While the rumor mills continue spinning, churning out different names for the next elite spy, only time will tell whether the Bond fans actually managed to correctly guess who is destined to lead the franchise.

Review: ‘Dual’ is a melodrama held together by Karen Gillian on powerhouse form

When it comes to human cloning, there have been numerous cinematic journeys undertaken over the years. Blade Runner is perhaps the most famous, while others with a more contemporary edge include The Island and Swan Song. However, writer and director Riley Stearns has taken a more grounded approach to the concept in his latest film Dual.

Headlined by Karen Gillian and featuring Aaron Paul, this present-day take on the idea introduces televised death matches early on, as trained participants take on their clones in government-approved combat. This low rent Hunger Games segue feels appropriately indie in budget, giving Dual its own cinematic identity from the outset. However, the direction soon switches to delve into the realms of relationship drama.

By focusing on Gillan’s Sarah and her relationship with Beulah Koale’s Peter, Dual soon turns into an awkward character study, with smatterings of social commentary. Satirical adverts extolling the virtues of owning your own clone are mildly amusing, but lack subtlety. On a broader level, everyone in the movie’s universe seems incapable of having a sincere conversation, preferring instead to focus on superficial stimuli, rather than directly engaging with each other.  

As a couple, Sarah and Peter barely spend any time together, making interactions unwieldy, and intimacy almost impossible. With stilted conversations and bland responses, it’s clear that this is a relationship on its last legs. Devoid of passion and lacking a sense of direction, her terminal diagnosis ironically injects some essential momentum into proceedings. As these two people get by on emotional autopilot, seemingly incapable of expressing anything close to a feeling, Dual dives into darker waters, exploiting the revelation of Sarah’s condition for dramatic effect.

Gillian is consistently excellent in her duplicitous role, introducing a variety of individual traits which makes each persona distinct. By treading a thin line between unassuming and inventively cunning, each incarnation seamlessly interacts, making these two versions of Sarah somehow more human. By detaching herself and forming a blank canvas, Gillian is able to imbue each facet of her portrayal with an inhuman quality. It’s a behavioral quirk which only becomes more pronounced over time, providing Dual with the propulsion it needs throughout.

In the past, many actors have attempted to perform opposite themselves onscreen and come unstuck, while technology has never made the conceit completely seamless. Exceptions to the rule include Tom Hardy in Legend, while Will Smith’s Gemini Man only confirmed that superior visual effects are nothing without a good story. Dual addresses the two-sided elephant in the room by allowing any bells and whistles to support the narrative, rather than overpower it through the use of needless computer-generated distractions.

Another crucial element worthy of note is Aaron Paul, who has been very selective in his career choices post-Breaking Bad. As Trent, he plays a combat trainer who systematically prepares Sarah for her own battle royale. In these sequences, both Paul and Gillian maintain a deliberately cumbersome chemistry, which complements the tonal choices that have come before, whilst adding a subtle comedic edge.

However, when circumstances change and Sarah goes into remission after 10 months of preparation, another crucial twist occurs, one which changes everything. In that final third, Dual delves further into what it means to be human and what identity really represents in contemporary society, doing so by honing in on some brutal home truths.

Having been created and tasted a little bit of life, Sarah’s double wants to stick around, meaning that someone has to die. A decision which is seemingly made easier by the fact that Peter is attracted to her, while even Sarah’s mother finds this version more appealing. In terms of making a point, this particular element of Dual cuts deeper than most, as nothing stinks more than family favoritism.

Needless to say, this epiphany is not the last on the list from a film with big ambitions. It is so much more than just a staggering central performance from Gillian, with solid support from Paul and others. In the final minutes when all those pennies start to drop, audiences will be left pondering much more than merely the ethical arguments on the surface.

As Sarah considers the life she’ll lead going forward, trapped by routine and responsibilities that no longer feel so attractive, there is more than a modicum of regret simmering beneath the surface. In the final frame, realization turns to blind panic, when she understands that just being human comes with its own set of problems.

Marvel fans are desperate to find out who’s who in the MCU Illuminati

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see Benedict Cumberbatch’s character facing some serious consequences for screwing with the fabric of reality in No Way Home. It appears his spell to force everyone to forget Peter Parker caught the attention of a group of very powerful people — and they’re not happy.

These are the Illuminati. In Marvel Comics, they’re a secret society comprised of Reed Richards, Namor, Tony Stark, Black Bolt, Charles Xavier, and Strange himself, who collectively manipulate world events from the shadows.

The MCU version appears to be more extradimensionally preoccupied, with membership drawn from across the multiverse, including a variant of Patrick Stewart’s Professor X. Now fans are frantically theorizing about who else will be present.

Many are certain Reed Richards is a lock:

Fortunately, we only have a week’s wait to find out for sure. However, with the social media and review embargo expiring early next week, expect spoilers to come in thick and fast on Twitter. These will likely confirm or deny which cameos are in the movie, and though Marvel has been perhaps a little too open in trailers and TV spots, we suspect they’re still holding back some huge surprises.

That said, if Tom Cruise really is in this movie as Tony Stark/Iron Man, people are going to lose their minds.

Andrew Garfield explains what sets ‘Under the Banner of Heaven’ apart from other true-crime shows

Andrew Garfield may have announced he is taking a break from acting, but the Oscar-nominated actor has left us with another spellbinding performance. He stars as Detective Jeb Pyre in the FX on Hulu miniseries Under the Banner of Heaven, based on the book of the same name. 

While promoting the true-crime series in a chat with Entertainment Weekly, he spoke about reading the book a decade ago, as well as the religious extremism that sometimes pushes people to commit heinous crimes. 

I read the book over 10 years ago, and I just loved it. I felt riveted and compelled, and I just find the themes and subject matter so fascinating: how fundamentalism and extremism can lead to enabling men to do horrific acts of violent evil in the name of God and love, and they avoid blaming their own egocentric desire. The delusion was just so fascinating to me.

The uniqueness of this particular story comes from the fact that the series’ antagonists, Ron and Dan Lafferty, believed their crimes were committed as a result of divine revelation, which apparently led them to murder a mother and daughter in Utah in the eighties. 

Garfield leads the series as the detective charged with investigating the murders and begins to question his faith in the process. Sam Worthington takes on the role of Ron, while Wyatt Russel stars as Dan. The first two episodes of Under the Banner of Heaven are now available to stream on Hulu, and the remaining four episodes will air weekly until May 26.

The Jason Sudeikis/Olivia Wilde situation is giving fans ‘Ted Lasso’ vibes

Fans took to Twitter to discuss how Jason Sudeikis‘s life imitated his art when his attorneys served actor and filmmaker Olivia Wilde with legal documents on stage at CinemaCon on April 26.

Deadline confirms that Wilde was handed an envelope containing custody papers during the presentation of her new film Don’t Worry, Darling at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. She opened it on stage but managed to keep calm and continue with the presentation of her new film.

Sudeikis claims he was unaware that his attorneys were planning to serve Wilde with the papers in such a dramatic fashion. His representative says that delivery of the envelope was “solely be up to the process service company involved” and that Sudeikis “would never condone her being served in such an inappropriate manner.”

For some fans, the incident was like a call back to the folksy football coach Sudeikis plays on Ted Lasso, the Apple TV plus dramedy series he co-created and stars in.

One fan felt it was reminiscent of one scene in particular.

Other observers felt that Sudeikis was channeling another character on the show — the spiteful and scheming Rebecca Welton, the ex-spouse of an unfaithful partner who devotes her time to inventing wickedly creative ways to undermine her former mate.

Sudeikis and Wilde have two children together. The two actors were engaged but never married and separated in 2020. 

Don’t Worry, Darling stars Olivia Wilde and her current partner Harry Styles. The film is slated for theatrical release on September 23, 2022.

‘Shazam 2’ makes meta ‘Fast & Furious’ reference to Helen Mirren

The first sneak peek of Shazam! Fury of the Gods has arrived and features a scene between Asher Angel and Helen Mirren with a hilarious meta-reference to the Fast & Furious franchise.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods sees Billy Batson (Asher Angel) face off with the villainous Daughters of Atlas, Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso (Lucy Liu). The trailer shows a scene between Batson and Hespera in which he says he’s seen all the Fast and Furious films, so he knows that family always wins, just as his super-powered family appears on the scene. Mirren stars as the nefarious Queenie in the Fast and Furious franchise.

Germain Lussier of Gizmodo and i09 viewed the trailer at CinemaCon and shared a tweet describing the clip:

The scene with Wonder Woman features a surprising plot twist that sets the tone for Batson’s confrontation with Hespera later in the film.

The teaser was so well received that some attendees are tipping Shazam! Fury of the Gods to become one of the most successful films of the year. Director David Sandberg later took to Twitter to announce that a full trailer is on the way in the not too distant future.

Wonder Woman cameo confirmed for ‘Shazam 2’, but not how you think

A preview of Shazam! Fury of the Gods features a cameo with Wonder Woman and a surprising plot twist.

Per Screen Rant, the clip depicts Shazam (Zachary Levi) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) at a Parisian restaurant, where he tells her that he can’t commit to a relationship with her. The Amazonian rises from her seat and starts to exit, but stops in her tracks, facing Shazam and revealing that she is Merlin, who tells Shazam that the Daughters of Atlas are after him. A dragon is seen landing near the pair, and Shazam eventually realizes he is dreaming.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the follow-up to Shazam! (2019) and continues the story of Billy Batson. In the first iteration, Batson was an ordinary boy who obtained extraordinary powers and could transform himself into a grown-up superhero by shouting the titular name. The sequel sees Billy nearing adulthood and facing a different set of challenges than he did in the previous film, which adds a layer of teenage charm to his dream about a date with Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman fans can also catch a glimpse of her in another upcoming movie in the DC Extended Universe. Selfies posted by Gal Gadot on her social media accounts suggest that the Wonder Woman star will also be making a cameo in The Flash, scheduled for release on June 23, 2023.

However, fans won’t have to wait that long to see Wonder Woman as Shazam! Fury of the Gods is scheduled to premiere just in time for the holiday season on December 19, 2022.

Zachary Levi doesn’t want ‘Shazam 2’ to lose the heart of the original

Shazam! was a movie full of magic with an extra dose of emotion and Zachary Levi doesn’t want to lose that in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Warner Bros. began their CinemaCon presentation with the DC sequel starring Levi who shared the aspects that he felt made the first movie so special. 

“We don’t want to veer from the magic we were able to find in the first movie, balancing action, comedy, drama and heart. That’s a massive part of what people connected to in the first movie.”

Shazam!, released in 2019, was a superhero story that’s really about discovering your true family. Billy Batson is an orphaned child, who is deemed a nuisance for running away from his foster homes in search of his mother, but when he comes to live with Victor and Rosa Vasquez and their five children, he learns the real meaning of family. His already complicated life gets more tangled when he is chosen by the wizard Shazam to possess the power of the gods because of his pure heart.

Billy goes on adventures with his new friend/foster brother Freddy Freeman who helps him discover his new powers. By saying his magical name, a lightning bolt strikes him and he grows into the mighty Shazam. He fights the superpowered Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) who wants Shazam’s powers for himself and the Seven Deadly Sins. By the end of the movie, he realizes that in order to win he needs to rely on his siblings and he shares his powers with them, turning them into superheroes who help him save the day.

In Fury of the Gods, Shazam will battle the three daughters of the Greek god – Atlas Hespera (Helen Miren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu), and the yet-unnamed third daughter played by Rachel Zegler. While the trio will be aided by dragons, harpies, and cyclops in the sequel, Shazam will once again have his superpowered ready to help him navigate the troubled waters.

Many new scenes from the film were shown at CinemaCon, and although the footage isn’t permitted to be posted online, reports have stated that Wonder Woman appears in the sequel but it isn’t the Amazonian warrior we know.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods comes to theaters this Dec. 16.

The internet is still reeling from the news that the guy from Iron Man 2 has bought Twitter. The 2010 movie was Marvel Studios’ first sequel, and demonstrated some early jitters for the MCU, with behind-the-scenes drama resulting in director Jon Favreau ruling himself out of directing The Avengers (though he went on to become an onscreen fixture of the franchise as Happy Hogan).

It remains to be seen what the guy from Iron Man 2 will do with his new purchase, though many Twitter personalities are fearing that there’s going to be a crackdown on criticism of him, or that his desire for free speech will give free rein to the worst people on the internet, but the guy from Iron Man 2 has since clarified his position.

But the proof, as always, will be in the pudding, so we’ll just have to wait and see what the guy from Iron Man 2 will do next. After the death of Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame, the pair won’t be hobnobbing anytime soon, though perhaps the guy from Iron Man 2 could pop up in future MCU productions. He’d make a good fit for a courtroom scene in She-Hulk, or perhaps attempting to advise Riri Williams as she makes her MCU debut in Ironheart.

Debate rages over whether or not ‘Deadpool 2’ has the best cameo ever

Deadpool 2 was a very rare thing in cinema: a sequel that’s a notable improvement over the first installment. Don’t misunderstand, the opener is still a wild ride, but the sequel cranks up the action, features a great foil to the Merc with the Mouth in Josh Brolin’s Cable, and has an excellent cast of supporting characters.

Among the highlights is Deadpool’s short-lived X-Force team, which results in one of the movie’s funniest gags. Recruit Vanisher does exactly what you’d expect, being almost entirely invisible throughout the movie. It’s only when he’s fried by a powerline that we see his true form: Hollywood legend Brad Pitt.

With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness promising more superhero cameos, fans are looking back and are arguing whether Pitt’s appearance in Deadpool 2 is the best to date.

Here’s hoping Deadpool 3 continues this trend, though as yet we don’t know when Ryan Reynolds is slipping back into the red and black suit. The latest we’ve heard is that regular writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese have been brought back to work on the script, with Free Guy and The Adam Project director Shawn Levy at the helm.

Sadly, there’s not even a murmur of a release date. If Deadpool 3 is to come out in 2023, they’d been to begin shooting sometime over the summer, but comments by Levy indicate it’s been quietly bumped back to 2024.

Fingers crossed some firmer news emerges on Deadpool 3 soon.

‘Lightyear’ director says the movie has spinoff potential of its own

With just a little over one month to go until its theatrical release, Lightyear director Angus MacLane is revealing the chance for the film to receive a spin-off of its own. The upcoming movie — which will introduce an origin story for Space Ranger superhero Buzz Lightyear — is the latest installment in the mega Toy Story franchise and will serve as a spin-off to the films that focus on the action figure Buzz Lightyear.

While speaking with Screen Rant, MacLane compared Lightyear to Star Wars when it comes to its open-ended nature of the events within the film, while teasing that a spin-off of the movie is completely possible.

To me, I look at it as what I liked about Star Wars is that it always allowed for the expansion of what the world could be. I think that that open endedness is often what’s most exciting, it’s when you start closing those doors and connecting those things that it becomes less compelling. So our focus right now is honestly finishing this movie, but it’s meant to be this like island of a narrative that is very much we don’t start when Buzz is born. It was very much this thing that you’d imagined stuff before and afterwards, I think connecting it is risky, but you know, who knows?

MacLane has already compared the Pixar film to Star Wars before, and it appears as though Lightyear’s overall influence holds the power to inspire a potential spin-off. Additionally, folks are already pining for Woody — arguably the most significant character in the Toy Story film series — to receive a well-deserved solo film of his own.

Don’t miss Lightyear when it arrives in theaters on June 17.

‘The Northman’ inspires fans to revisit ‘The Green Knight’

Fans have taken to Twitter to rave about The Northman and some of the striking parallels it shares with The Green Knight.

The Northman premiered on April 22, mesmerizing moviegoers with the 10th-century tale of Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård), an Icelandic prince, and his bloody vendetta against his murderous, power-hungry uncle. Like The Green Knight, it is based on an epic poem from the Middle Ages about virtue, violence and vengeance.

The Green Knight is a medieval fantasy film that tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), a knight of the Round Table and nephew of King Arthur, who accepts the Faustian challenge of the mystical Green Knight.

Both films are inspired by two epic legends from the Middle Ages, both are centered on male protagonists who assert their dominance through contests with formidable rivals, and both men are buckling under the weight of complicated maternal influences. In addition to this, both men are beholden to strict codes of honor from which they cannot deviate. As Amleth and Gawain carve out their places in society, they are compelled to seek validation with terrifying displays of strength designed to strike fear in anyone who might seek to challenge them.
