Benedict Cumberbatch Says Spider-Man: No Way Home Will Start Fan Debates
Tom Holland called Spider-Man: No Way Home the single most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made, which is big talk for a blockbuster that we still don’t know a great deal about. Obviously, the trailer was full of jaw-dropping visuals and teases of what’s to come, but in terms of specifics; we remain largely in the dark.
Andrew Garfield has even been going actively out of his way to tell people he’s not in the movie, but nobody believes him, which is an entirely justified reaction when fans hedged their bets on Garfield and Tobey Maguire reprising their respective roles as Marc Webb and Sam Raimi’s Spideys from the second the multiverse was confirmed.
The involvement of Doctor Strange has also generated no shortage of discussion, with the Sorcerer Supreme acting very out of character in the promo, to the extent there’s now a firm belief he’s an imposter. In a new interview with the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Benedict Cumberbatch played coy over the plot, but admitted that No Way Home is set to stir up plenty of debate.
“Yeah, it will be a lot, a lot of fun. There will be a lot of debate about it, I’m sure, but it’s a daring, brilliant concept. It has got great ambition. I haven’t seen it, but by all accounts I think it’s achieved it. And I mean, even on paper, the audacity of it, like, ‘How the hell is that gonna work?’. Also, so excited about the overall opportunity of them exploring those ideas. So yeah, I’ll be really interested to see how it comes out. But I’m pretty certain it’ll be a hit.”
That’s an interesting way to phrase things, one that could be interpreted a thousand different ways. Of course, the very media-savvy Cumberbatch will know fine well that he’s only stoking the fires of speculation. Spider-Man: No Way Home leads directly into the actor’s own Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so the discourse could stem from the lay of the land should the web-slinging epic tear apart the very fabric of reality before the credits roll.

Disney’s Live-Action Little Mermaid Sets Summer 2023 Release Date
By the time Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid arrives, it’ll be the first one of the studio’s re-imaginings to play exclusively in theaters for almost four years. That’s crazy when you think about it, considering 2019 brought four of them and saw Aladdin, The Lion King, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Dumbo combine to earn over $3.5 billion at the box office.
Lady and the Tramp released on Disney Plus in November 2019, Mulan was locked behind the Premier Access paywall last summer, while Cruella was awarded a hybrid release this past May. Next year is expected to bring David Lowery’s Peter Pan & Wendy and Robert Zemeckis’ Pinocchio with Tom Hanks as Gepetto, but they were both confirmed as streaming exclusives a long time ago.
Disney favorite Rob Marshall, who helmed Into the Woods, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Mary Poppins Returns, is directing The Little Mermaid from a script by Jane Goldman and Dave Magee. Shooting wrapped in early July, with the movie now confirmed for a May 26th, 2023 release.
That’s a decent amount of time to wait for a project that’s already in post-production, but you’d have to imagine Disney are playing it as safe as possible when it comes to delaying the next batch of big budget releases, because we’ll be well into 2022 at the earliest before the theatrical industry finally manages to shake off the effects of the pandemic and return to normal.

Black Widow Star Wants To Team Up With Scarlet Witch
Florence Pugh became an instant favorite among Marvel Cinematic Universe fans after making her debut in Black Widow, with the actress’ Yelena Belova bursting onto the screen to come perilously close to stealing the entire movie from under Scarlett Johansson’s nose.
Everybody wanted to see more of Yelena as soon as possible, and they’ll get their wish imminently. The Academy Award nominee was confirmed to return in Hawkeye before Black Widow was even released, and the post-credits scene of Phase Four’s theatrical opener set her up for a misguided revenge mission, with Clint Barton the target.
After that, we can most likely expect Pugh to become an integral part of the MCU, especially when Black Widow director Cate Shortland confirmed the mantle is hers for the taking. In a new interview with FirstPost, the 25 year-old revealed that she’s got her sights set on a team-up with the franchise’s most powerful superhero.
“I’ve always been intrigued by the Scarlet Witch. Just because I really like how equally bizarre she is as well.”
Following the events of WandaVision, everybody wants a piece of Elizabeth Olsen, who’s set to continue down her darker path in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Unlike her surrogate sister, Yelena would definitely consider Scarlet Witch ‘one of the big ones’, and we’ll be eagerly anticipating any interactions between the two.

A Forgotten Tom Cruise Movie Is Blowing Up On Streaming
Tom Cruise doesn’t really tackle sci-fi all that often, but when he does, the results tend to be stellar at the very least. The A-lister has only made a handful of movies set in the genre, but they’ve each been distinctly different and taken a unique approach to the well-worn tropes audiences have become accustomed to over the decades.
Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky was a heady thriller that was equal parts psychological and existential, while his Steven Spielberg collaborations Minority Report and War of the Worlds yielded strong reviews and bumper box office. Edge of Tomorrow is comfortably one of the finest sci-fi blockbusters of the last decade, but Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion often tends to get lost in the shuffle when discussing Cruise’s recent filmography.
A Rotten Tomatoes score of 53% and a $287 million gross is middle of the road by the star’s lofty standards, with the visual polish and heady ideas on display often undercut by a script that’s painfully lacking in several important departments. Cruise is as reliable as ever in the lead, and you can never fault a Morgan Freeman performance where he’s relied on to deliver exposition in those syrupy tones of his, but Oblivion is lacking a certain spark to take it to the next level.
Nobody’s going to take issue with the visuals, which are regularly stunning, nor the impressive sense of scale and world-building on display. That being said, it just isn’t one of Cruise’s best efforts. Still, that hasn’t stopped the 2013 epic from finding a new lease of life on HBO Max, where it’s one of the most-watched titles on the platform.

After that, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers: Endgame is the lengthiest superhero blockbuster via a running time that’s just one minute over the three-hour mark, but no other efforts in the genre have breached that barrier. More movie means less screenings per day in theaters, which in turn results in lower box office takings, so you can understand why the major studios haven’t released the three biggest butt-numbers in their entirety on the big screen.

However, we’re hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery would return in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings long before it was confirmed – that Matt Reeves reportedly wants The Batman to remain much closer to three hours than two as he trims down his assembly cut in the editing suite.
Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises was 165 minutes and became bogged down by frequently glacial pacing, so you’d hope Reeves has a story worth expanding to such an epic scale, otherwise things can comfortably fall into self-indulgence. With six months still to go until release, though, it could be a long time before we find out if The Batman will be on the shorter or longer side of the equation.

Mission: Impossible 7 Star Says Tom Cruise Doesn’t Make Bad Movies
You might not instantly recognize his name, but you’ll definitely know Shea Whigham’s face. The 52 year-old has become one of the industry’s most unsung character actors, showing up in a wide and eclectic array of projects ranging from acclaimed dramas to billion-dollar blockbusters.
Just a sample of his credits include three installments in the Fast & Furious franchise, Machete, The Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle, Kong: Skull Island, Bad Times at the El Royale, Joker, Boardwalk Empire, Season 1 of True Detective, Agent Carter, Fargo and Narcos. During that time, he’s worked with some of the biggest names in the business, and Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible 7 will be added to his filmography next September.
In a new interview with ScreenRant to promote upcoming Jon Bernthal black comedy drama Small Engine Repair, Whigam said the independent shoot wasn’t all that different from Mission: Impossible 7 in many respects, while he had high praise for the movie’s leading man and director Christopher McQuarrie.
“In ways, you think this huge canvas of Mission Impossible would be a lot different from what we did here, and I’m not being facetious in this answer, there’s a lot different obviously, but there’s a lot the same because Cruise and McQuarrie, they’re cinephiles, they’re always chasing story and character and they’re always wanting to know where the pressure lies from the scene before going into the next scene. So there were these creative conversations that we would have ourselves in something as intimate as Small Engine Repair. It’s going to be very good because those guys don’t make bad movies.”
While Cruise does boast a track record of success that’s seen him reign at the top of the A-list for 35 years and counting, Whigham clearly hasn’t seen The Mummy, because he’s definitely appeared in a stinker or two. Based on the quality of Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation and Fallout, though, Mission: Impossible 7 is surely destined for greatness.

Gene Roddenberry’s Son Isn’t Sold On Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek Idea
Quentin Tarantino and Star Trek hardly felt like obvious bedfellows, especially with an R-rating thrown into the mix. For a while, it looked as though the two-time Academy Award winner’s stab at sci-fi was actually going to happen after he continually talked it up publicly, but the chances of it coming together have grown increasingly slim.
The Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs director remains adamant that he’s retiring after his next feature, and while he could feasibly co-write that screenplay with The Revenant‘s Mark L. Smith and have somebody else step behind the camera, Paramount are moving forward with two new Star Trek projects, which would appear to shunt Tarantino’s effort into development hell.
While a lot of Tarantino and Trek enthusiasts will be left disappointed if the 1930s-set gangster film doesn’t see the light of day, one person who wouldn’t be all that bothered is creator Gene Roddenberry’s son Rod. In an interview with Forbes, he admitted that despite being a fan of the filmmaker’s work, he doesn’t believe he’d be the right person to continue his father’s legacy.
“I struggle with that because the way I’m pretty myopic with the way I see Star Trek. I mentioned that I grew up with fans coming up to me out saying how Star Trek inspired them and gave them hope for the future. It’s the optimism and the messaging in there that make Star Trek what it was. I truly believe that. If you create a Star Trek, that is just action; that is not Star Trek, in my opinion. That’s what makes it different than Star Wars, and I love Star Wars, but they can both coexist. And I love Tarantino’s work and the kind of films that he does. I am trying to have an open mind.
I would be curious to read a script on his take. I do not think you could say we’re going to do a Reservoir Dogs Star Trek. I’ll be honest, that doesn’t work for me, but he is a fan, and I think as a fan, he probably understands to some degree that Star Trek has to have some of this messaging. I would be curious, and I would try to have an open mind, but I’m not sure what it would be. I am glad that people are willing to explore that at least.”
That’s an understandable point of view; Star Trek has always been loaded with subtext about humanity, whereas Tarantino’s work is largely characterized by unflinching violence, pop culture references and plenty of creatively foul-mouthed verbiage, none of which particularly suits or reflects the franchise.
