Gerard Butler Reveals He’s Shooting A Fun, Sexy Sequel Next Year
When you see Gerard Butler‘s name attached to a movie, there’s a 99% chance you know exactly what you’re going to get. Arguably the king of the mid budget action thriller, although Liam Neeson might have something to say about that, the actor unsurprisingly has a string of projects lined up that tick all of the boxes you’d imagine.
He co-stars with Frank Grillo in next week’s Copshop, signed on last year to play Mike Banning for a fourth time in Night Has Fallen, will return in sequel Greenland: Migration, and is currently shooting Jean-François Richet’s The Plane, all of which occupy almost identical genre territory.
In February 2018, it was confirmed that a follow up to Den of Thieves was in the works, the crime caper that drew mixed reviews and earned a shade over $80 million at the box office on a $30 million budget. We’ve heard precious little about the film since, but Butler has now confirmed in an interview with UniLad that production is set to kick off early next year.
“We’re supposed to shoot early next year. We’re Europe-bound, we’re still on the hunt for Donnie who’s now on the diamond district in Marseilles. I go over to hunt him down, but with different intentions than you might imagine. So we’re gonna be in Marseilles, the Alps and London. It’s definitely a more glamorous journey than the last one, and probably a more fun, sexy journey.”
The opener saw Butler as the leader of an elite law enforcement unit tasked with stopping a gang of criminals from pulling off an impossible heist, but the star’s Nick O’Brien found himself in a very different position by the time the credits rolled, which sets up the next Den of Thieves to take the story in a brand new direction. The movie enjoyed sustained success on Netflix after being added to the library in 2020, so there’s clearly an audience eager to see more.

Dwayne Johnson Reportedly Wants Black Adam To Fight Darkseid
Not to offer too broad a generalization to risk the wrath of comic book diehards, but there are plenty of comparisons to be made between DC’s Darkseid and Marvel’s Thanos. Both are all-powerful comic book villains who debuted in the early 1970s, possess chins that could be described as scrotal in nature, and have proven to be such a formidable obstacle that only the combined might of an entire team of superheroes can stop them.
One major difference is their respective big screen fortunes; Josh Brolin’s Thanos emerged from the shadows to live up to his reputation as the Infinity Saga’s end-of-level boss, while we didn’t even see Ray Porter’s Darkseid until Zack Snyder’s Justice League hit HBO Max this past March. In the aftermath, his was even nixed on two fronts when Warner Bros. drew a line under the SnyderVerse and canned Ava DuVernay’s New Gods.
However, we’re now hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us Jared Leto’s Joker was getting a brand new look in the Snyder Cut long before it was confirmed – that Dwayne Johnson reportedly wants Black Adam to prove his mettle as the baddest motherf*cker in the DCEU by taking on the tyrannical ruler of the planet Apokolips.
Ever since the long-gestating project finally came together, Johnson and his collaborators have talked up Black Adam as the Dirty Harry of superheroes, one who doesn’t have a no-kill rule and is every bit as dangerous as his reputation would suggest. If that’s the case, then setting him on a collision course with arguably DC’s biggest bad would definitely be one way of showing it.

MCU Stars Reached Out To Simu Liu Following Shang-Chi’s Success
It’s absolutely a cliche, but you nonetheless get the impression that the core cast members to have been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years are like a family. That even extends to the newest additions to the franchise, as revealed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu.
The actor has experienced a couple of years that have been both meteoric and whirlwind in nature; he’s gone from geeking out over meeting Benedict Cumberbatch when he was first announced as Shang-Chi at 2019’s San Diego Comic-Con to being officially confirmed as the latest member of the Avengers, as well as the leading man of a movie that currently boasts the MCU’s highest-ever audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
As you’d imagine, Liu has been basking in the comic book blockbuster’s success all week, even taking a moment to mock the naysayers who thought Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings would flop at the box office. In a new interview with the Phase Zero podcast, the 32 year-old revealed that several franchise stalwarts have reached out to offer their congratulations.
“It’s definitely felt like a knighting of some sort. Tom Holland reached out, sent me this very enthusiastic voice memo, which just meant the world. Brie Larson reached out. Tom Hiddleston wrote me this massive congratulatory email, which is so great. Tom and I had spoken briefly at Comic-Con. It was a real full-circle moment to hear from him. I mean, it really did feel like people were watching, and in this moment, they were there to celebrate with us, which just meant the world.”

Not everybody is obligated to like all of their co-workers, something we all know fine well, but it’s nice to hear that many MCU alumni have made the effort to get in touch and praise Shang-Chi of the Legend of the Ten Rings. It’s a close-knit group Kevin Feige has put together over the last thirteen years, and we may even be seeing Liu team up with Larson, Holland and Hiddleston whenever that fifth Avengers epic eventually happens.

An Explosive New Action Movie Just Hit Netflix
The high concept action thriller has been a staple of Netflix’s original content for a while, but even by the platform’s lofty standards the last few months have delivered a series of wildly popular and even more entertaining efforts to have dominated the most-watched rankings.
Throughout the summer alone we’ve seen Liam Neeson headline The Ice Road, Karen Gillan go full Kill Bill in Gunpowder Milkshake and watched an aircraft suffer serious vampire issues from the edge of our seats thanks to Blood Red Sky, with today bringing the release of Tokyo-set revenge story Kate.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as the title character, who finds herself poisoned by her enemies and left with just 24 hours to live. Instead of simply accepting her fate, the highly-trained assassin goes on the rampage to seek retribution against those who pre-emptively killed her, and she’s got a teenage girl along for the ride.
In essence a combination of Keanu Reeves’ John Wick and Jason Statham’s Crank, Kate hails from David Leitch and Kelly McCormick’s 87North production company, so we can expect impressive choreography and stylish fight sequences given that the outfit have also been responsible for Charlize Theron’s Atomic Blonde and Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody. Woody Harrelson and Hiroyuki Sanada co-star in the bone-crunching actioner, which is well-placed to generate some impressive viewing figures.
