Amber Heard Fails To Get Johnny Depp Defamation Lawsuit Thrown Out

The courtroom battles between warring ex-spouses Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are far from over, and even though the former Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts star lamented the industry’s decision to boycott him, the actor has scored a significant win in the latest chapter of the never-ending saga.

Two years ago, Depp launched a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Heard, who not only responded with a $100 million counterclaim, but sought to have the initial action against her dismissed based on the fact Depp came out on the losing end of his libel trail opposite British tabloid The Sun.

The Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom actress moved in April to have the case thrown out due to the outcome in the libel proceedings, believing she was well-positioned to succeed after he also lost out on trying to have the verdict overturned on appeal. As you can read below, Fairfax County Chief Judge Penney Azcarate released a statement outlining her decision to disagree.

“The Court is not persuaded by Defendant’s argument that Plaintiff had a full and fair opportunity to litigate the UK Action. Defendant was not a part in the UK action and was not treated as one, because she was not named a defendant, she was not subject to the same discovery rules applicable to named parties. In fact, Defendant could not have been a named defendant to the UK litigation because her allegedly defamatory statements were made after the UK action commence. Defendant argues she was in privity with The Sun because they both had the same interest in the case. However, for privity to exist, Defendant’s interest in the case must be so identical with The Sun‘s interest such that The Sun’s representation of its interest is also a representation of Defendant’s legal right,”

That’s an awful lot of legal jargon to sift through, but the long and short if the situation is that it’s a win for Johnny Depp, and his second in a matter of weeks after a New York judge decreed that he could conduct a determination on whether or not Heard actually donated part of her $7 million divorce settlement to the American Civil Liberties Union as she’d claimed.

There’s yet another war brewing between the former couple that’s set to kick off in Virginia beginning April 2022, and while Depp will no doubt be buoyed by scoring two small victories in quick succession, based on what’s unfolded so far, it would be safe to assume that the end is still nowhere near in sight.

Jurassic World: Dominion Director Reveals Hilarious Dinosaur Request

The first two installments in the Jurassic World trilogy both introduced a brand new hybrid dinosaur into the mix, specifically designed and engineered by Dr. Henry Wu and his team. Naturally, the Indominous Rex and Indoraptor ended up going rogue and killing an awful lot of people, but that’s hardly going to dissuade the franchise’s erstwhile villain from trying it all over again.

The ending of Fallen Kingdom set Colin Trevorrow’s Dominion on a unique narrative path, now that dinosaurs are roaming the wilds and presumably making things very difficult for everyone and everything around them as they look to return to the top of the food chain for the first time in 65 million years.

That’s set to result in an all-star lineup of Jurassic Park and World talent being assembled, with returning stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard being joined by the original trio of Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, who aren’t here to simply show up for a fan-baiting cameo and then disappear from the story.

Plot details remain under lock and key for now, but Tevorrow recently took to social media and revealed that he keeps getting pitched a brand new hybrid dinosaur by none other than Phil Lord, one half of the filmmaking duo behind Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The LEGO Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and more, which you can check out below.

While it’s very unlikely that Trevorrow will give Lord what he wants, it’d be pretty funny if he did, not to mention a turn up for the books if Jurassic World: Dominion‘s brand new reptilian adversary was played entirely for laughs instead of terrorizing the human cast.

Amazon’s Welcome To The Blumhouse Returning In October With 4 New Movies

Having already conquered the big screen by gaining a reputation as one of Hollywood’s premiere hit factories, Blumhouse have expanded into the world of streaming exclusives via a partnership with Amazon that’s set to continue shining a spotlight on some of the horror genre’s rising stars.

The initial quartet of Welcome to the Blumhouse movies arrived last October, with the first pair debuting on October 6th and the other two premiering a week later. Admittedly, reviews were hardly enthusiastic all across the board, but as an experimental anthology series it’s definitely worth continuing, especially when fans around the world love to devour as much content as humanly possible throughout the spookiest month of the year.

The good news is that Welcome to the Blumhouse is back in October, with four new features boasting a mix of recognizable names and unknowns. Bingo Hell and Black as Night will both arrive on October 1st, promising wildly different explorations of standard horror tropes.

The former finds a senior citizen protecting her neighborhood from an evil force that’s taken over the local bingo hall, with Gigi Saul Guerrero co-writing and directing, and the latter follows a revenge-fueled teenager battling vampires in New Orleans, with Maritte Lee Go directing from a script by Sherman Payne.

A couple moving to a migrant farming community in 1970s California experience terrifying visions in Ryan Zaragoza’s Madres starring Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s Tenoch Huerta, and Axelle Carolyn writes and directs The Manor, where a stroke victim finds herself convinced a malevolent entity is killing the residents at the titular nursing home.

That’s four brand new movies with enticingly high concepts and intriguing premises, setting up the return of Welcome to the Blumhouse as something to keep an eye on.

Ryan Reynolds Credits His A-List Friends With Free Guy’s Success

Box office chart-topper Free Guy was largely marketed and sold on the back of its high concept presence and the undeniable star power of Ryan Reynolds, but the leading man and producer isn’t rushing to take all of the credit for Shawn Levy’s video game-inspired blockbuster opening well above industry expectations.

As you’d expect from a project that’s so reliant on pop culture to drive its narrative, Free Guy features more than a few celebrity cameos, both obvious and very sneaky. Just some of Reynolds’ A-list buddies to either appear onscreen or lend their vocal talents to the movie include Channing Tatum, Tina Fey, John Krasinski, Dwayne Johnson, Hugh Jackman and Chris Evans, the latter of whom sent the internet into meltdown with his incredulous response to a Captain America reference.

While Reynolds was heavily involved in every aspect of Free Guy, ranging from development and writing to scene-stealing and even recruitment, he’s more than happy to credit the success of the critically acclaimed action comedy to his bevvy of superstar buddies, as you can see below.

There isn’t a cynical bone in Free Guy‘s body, so Reynolds isn’t lying when he says it’s a movie all about friendship. Sure, there are some digs at consumer culture, the gaming community and Hollywood’s relentless desire to mine a valuable IP for all that it’s worth, but at the end of the day it boils down to a heartwarming reflection on making the best of what you’ve been given and sharing the experience with the people closest to you, even if it helps that Reynolds’ inner circle just so happens to include Black Adam, Wolverine and Captain America.

Emma Stone Reportedly Already In Talks For Cruella 3

It was literally less than a week ago that Emma Stone was confirmed to have signed on the dotted line to reprise her scenery-chewing and showstopping turn as the titular Disney villain in a Cruella sequel, but a new rumor claims that the Academy Award winner is already circling a deal for a trilogy-closing chapter.

That’s about the extent of the information made available, so it’s unclear whether it’s an entirely different set of negotiations or Cruella 3 factored into Stone’s contract for the second installment, but one thing we do know for sure is that the star and executive producer is set for a significant bump in pay after reportedly leveraging Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow lawsuit to her advantage when she sat down to hammer things out with the Mouse House.

For a long time, Disney didn’t show much interest in sequelizing or franchising the production line of live-action remakes, with the exception of Jon Favreau’s Jungle Book being announced for another outing that swiftly vanished into the ether of development hell, never to be heard from again.

Johnny Depp may have returned for Alice Through the Looking Glass and Angelina Jolie headlined Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, but those were two exceptions to the rule that significantly under-performed at the box office compared to their predecessors. However, something has clearly changed now that Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin follow up and Barry Jenkins’ sequel to Favreau’s The Lion King are both in development alongside Cruella 2.

An episodic Beauty and the Beast spinoff for Disney Plus has finally gained some momentum, too, so it’s all systems go for the remake empire to continue expanding at a rapid rate.

Doctor Strange 2 Star Says She’s Proud To Be America Chavez

So far, the cast announced for Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is almost entirely comprised of either stars returning from the first movie or franchise veterans, with one notable exception.

The major new addition to the ensemble alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s title hero, Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, Rachel McAdams’ Christine Palmer, Benedict Wong’s Wong and Chiwitel Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo is Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, the fan favorite first introduced into the comic books in 2011.

Not only is Miss America a key part of the Young Avengers, a squad all but certain to make their MCU bow during Phase Four looking at the sheer volume of past and present members of the roster now established in the mythology, but the character is also Marvel’s first Latin-American LGBTQ+ superhero.

That honor isn’t lost on the young actress, and while she wouldn’t say too much during a recent interview on the red carpet at Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ world premiere for fear of giving away spoilers, Gomez could barely contain her excitement at being chosen to bring America Chavez to life.

“Well I can’t say too much, especially since Kevin Feige is like right there. But what I can say is that I’m very excited for the movie to come out, and I’m just really excited for people to see my work on screen. I mean I really put so much work into it and I’m really, really, so proud of it. And I’m just excited for it to come out. I’m just excited to be here, number one! And I’m such a fan of Marvel in general so being here is just like, I’m just shaking being here and being invited!”

One of Miss America’s key abilities is inter-dimensional travel, and given the title of the movie, it might be safe to assume that those powers could come in handy during Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is poised to continue upending the MCU as we know it following Loki‘s Season 1 finale, which brought the concept of alternate realities crashing into the Sacred Timeline. It’ll be a key role, and more than likely a recurring one that sets Gomez up as one of Marvel’s most prominent new heroes.

Former James Bond Director Reveals His Thoughts On The Franchise’s Future

When it comes to rebooting James Bond for a new generation, nobody’s done it better than Martin Campbell. In fact, he even managed to do it twice, and both times delivered a globetrotting espionage blockbuster that debuted the latest incumbent of the tux in the most spectacular fashion possible, right from the opening scene.

Having proven his chops with 1995’s Goldeneye that kicked off the Pierce Brosnan era, Campbell was once again drafted in to provide a safe and experienced pair of hands when Daniel Craig was bringing 007 back to basics as a hard-edged rookie agent in Casino Royale. In each instance, audiences knew they were in for something special before the elaborate credits sequences had even started.

Craig’s final outing as cinema’s most iconic secret agent is still awaiting release, with No Time to Die having been delayed for eighteen months as a result of the pandemic. During that time, Amazon acquired MGM and generated a ton of speculation about where Bond goes from here, although producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli have reiterated their commitment theatrical exclusivity.

As someone who knows a thing or two about Bond, Campbell was asked in a recent interview what he thought the future may hold, and he believes Eon might just hit the pause button on the franchise.

“I think, at the moment, the studio is determined to get the one that’s been sitting on the shelf for a year and a half, whatever it is, to get that out. And, normally, Bond’s cycle is two years or three years. Every two years, it used to be a new Bond would come out. I think with Daniel Craig going, I think with the one that they’ve got on the shelf that I think is coming out the end of October, I’m not sure, but they’ve given a date for it and they’ve had two false starts already.

So I think they’ll get that out and then they’ll just take a big deep breath and it’ll probably be maybe another three years before the next one comes out because they have to cast a new Bond and that takes some breaking in. And it has to be scripted and everything else. So, now that Daniel’s gone, of course, where do you go with it? That’s the other question.”

The next step for James Bond is going to be a pivotal one in the wake of the Amazon/MGM deal, especially when a new leading man is being sought to fill one of the industry’s most coveted roles. It’s a curious time to be a 007 supporter, that’s for sure, but there’s just as much uncertainty as excitement.
