They are Amazon and Netflix. One provides quarantined Americans with all their necessary provisions, including basic needs and luxury items. The other delivers the entertainment that allows them to endure these periods of unprecedented boredom.
Where movie studios and cinemas languish because social distancing guidelines prohibited them from producing movies and prevented audiences from coming together to watch them, Netflix and other streaming services are enjoying a period of unprecedentedly low competition. Such lack of competition has proven good for business, as Netflix alone gained over 10 million subscribers during the second quarter of 2020.
In context, that is a record-breaking number, even for a record-breaking company like Netflix. It translates, for instance, to a revenue of about six billion dollars in total as well as a net income of $1.59 per share. Despite the surprising success the company has endured this quarter, though, it isn’t getting its hopes up for the next as it expects to gain a mere 2.5 million additional subscribers.
“We live in uncertain times with restrictions on what we can do socially and many people are turning to entertainment for relaxation, connection, comfort and stimulation,” Netflix tried to explain the victory in their quarterly shareholder letter. Here, too, however, the company cautions for a disappointing future.
“We expect less growth for the second half of 2020 compared to the prior year,” the letter goes on to say. “As we navigate these turbulent circumstances, we’re focused on our members by continuing to improve the quality of our service and bringing new films and shows to people’s screens.”
Those 10 million new subscribers are even more significant considering the ever increasing amount of new streaming services entering the market. Where once Netflix needed only to compete with HBO and Hulu, now the company must also content itself with foes like Disney+, Peacock, and of course HBO Max.
The movie industry was hit hard by the coronavirus and the social distancing guidelines which governments and communities have employed to check its spread. Not only are most films produced using large crews that work together in tight, enclosed spaces, they are also typically enjoyed by equally massive crowds which gather in similar environments.
Although some American theater chains have proposed plans to reopen, others remain silent. With more and more states seeing a surge in infections, a second wave of quarantine also appears to be more likely than ever before. All of these elements combine to create the worst possible scenario for cinemas, which one expert now suggests could remain closed until as late as next summer.
Doug Creutz, an analyst working for multinational investment bank Cowen and an influential player in the field of finance, recently changed his rating on the stock for The Walt Disney Company with this exact thought in mind. His lack of faith in the entertainment business sets an example for other investors, promising some financial trouble for the media conglomerate and its various competitors.
As far as Creutz is concerned, the adverse effect which the pandemic has on Disney’s theme parks, ongoing productions and above all theater distribution channels paints a picture that is disheartening to say the least.
“With the spread of COVID-19 having accelerated in the U.S.,” he told THR, “we expect a prolonged impact.” “We now expect domestic theaters to be largely closed until mid-2021, in part because we don’t think studios will be interested in releasing their largest movies into a capacity-constrained footprint.”
Although Disney managed to score itself a fairly big win with its recently-launched streaming platform, whose recent acquisition of the Broadway musical Hamilton has got the internet under its influence, Creutz couldn’t care less. As long as the company cannot produce new content – which was and remains its greatest strength, especially when compared to powerhouses like Netflix – business isn’t looking too good.

There’s a point in the career of many movie stars when they decide to go back to the well that made them a success in the first place. Sylvester Stallone did it with Rocky and Rambo, Harrison Ford with Star Wars, Blade Runner and the upcoming Indiana Jones 5 and Keanu Reeves is currently in that stage.
He has Bill & Ted Face the Music and The Matrix 4 coming at some point and now he’s shown interest in revisiting Constantine. The director of that film, Francis Lawrence, recently revealed that he’s spoken to Reeves about a sequel and says that the actor would “love to do another” one. Meanwhile, producer Akiva Goldsman is also onboard.
The original film came out in 2005 and despite a February release, it still managed to earn $230 million off of a budget north of $100 million. While not spectacular, it’s still respectable. Warner Bros., however, didn’t see a financial future moving forward so a sequel never came about. That being said, Constantine is a pretty good movie thanks to terrific world-building, a menacing undertone and Reeves’ noir-style performance.
The character has remained in the public conscience over the years, too. A TV series of the same name starring Matt Ryan came out in 2014 and he eventually made his way to Legends of Tomorrow, where he’s quite popular.
In a post-Snyder Cut world, anything can get made with a certain amount of support behind it. Keanu Reeves is currently in the business of doing sequels and while Constantine doesn’t carry the same level of cache as some of his other franchises, there’ve been constant whispers and reports of Warner Bros. cooking something up for us behind the scenes. Let’s hope they formally announce it soon.

On Thursday, DoorDash announced that it’s introducing on-demand delivery services from Walgreens to provide “everyday essentials” to your doorstep. Customers in Atlanta, Chicago, and Denver can now order over 2,300 items from the pharmacy chain, including over-the-counter medication, groceries, snacks, and beauty products. DoorDash and Walgreens did not mention whether users can also have their prescription medication delivered, so you’ll probably still need to go to the store for that.
DoorDash says it plans to expand to other cities with “major markets” this summer, including Cincinnati, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, Sacramento, and Seattle.

NASA has once again delayed the launch of its new powerful space observatory, the James Webb Space Telescope, mostly due to disruptions stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently slated to fly in March of 2021, the massive telescope is now scheduled to launch on October 31st, 2021.
The Government Accountability Office, or GAO, had already predicted this delay. NASA came up with the new date after doing an extensive review to see if the March 2021 timing was actually possible.
