WB Said To Be Developing Birds Of Prey Spinoffs For Black Canary And Huntress

If the protracted title of Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is anything to go by, then Margot Robbie’s character is set to be the star of Cathy Yan’s upcoming flick. But seeing how this is still a team-up movie, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to hear that the DC feature may end up doing what cinematic universe films are supposed to do and spawn a few spinoffs.

According to sources close to We Got This Covered, Warner Bros. is developing solo movies for Huntress, Black Canary and Cassandra Cain that could be going into production if Birds of Prey proves a big enough hit at the box office. Additionally, it’s said that Rosie Perez’s character Renee Montoya could be getting the same treatment, too, though this possibility is deemed less likely.

For those unfamiliar with the property, next year’s release will see Cassandra Cain, played by the young Ella Jay Basco, in need of saving from crime lord Black Mask, prompting Harley to team up with Renee Montoya, Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary to come to her aid.

Given how many DC features are said to be in development right now – from a Blue Beetle movie, to a Zatanna flick, to that Green Lantern Corps film we keep hearing about – it’s best not to take any of these potential spinoffs as a done deal, but if The Trench from Aquaman can land their own project, then surely at least one of Harley’s new friends can garner enough fan support to go solo, too, right?

Regardless, we’ll find out if any of the team leaves us wanting more when Birds of Prey hits theaters on February 7th, 2020.

Awesome New Art Shows Us Zac Efron As The Next Wolverine

Zac Efron may have permanently shattered his old persona as a Disney Channel heartthrob with his recent turn as serial killer Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile, but in a new post from BossLogic, the fan artist imagines what it would look like if the actor returned to the Mouse House in a very different role.

The image comes in response to last week’s news that Efron has undergone surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament. In the caption, BossLogic writes that he wishes the star “a speedy recovery from his ACL injury,” and to stress this point, the illustration shows Efron as one of the speediest healers of them all, Wolverine, complete with dog tags, facial hair, and those famous adamantium claws.

Earlier this month, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner mentioned that Marvel is looking for a younger actor to fill Hugh Jackman’s shoes as the next Wolverine, and while it could be a long wait before we find out who lands the part, the internet is having plenty of fun speculating.

Lately, for instance, there’s been some less-than-serious talk of Daniel Radcliffe being a candidate for the role after the Harry Potter actor joked about the possibility. Keanu Reeves, meanwhile, has expressed an interest in playing Logan on more than one occasion, though the John Wick star’s age presumably makes him an even less likely candidate than Radcliffe.

Regardless, we’re unlikely to get any official news on the next Wolverine at least until the Disney/Fox deal comes into effect in a few months from now. In the meantime, though, the current incarnation of the X-Men universe soldiers on with the release of Dark Phoenix on June 7th, 2019.

Star Wars Celebration Guest Fuels Theories Of Emperor Cameo In Star Wars: Episode IX

With Lucasfilm being even more stingy than expected on the details of Star Wars: Episode IX, a lot of hopes are being pinned right now on this April’s Star Wars Celebration, which is widely predicted to see the premiere of the first proper trailer for J.J. Abrams’ upcoming trilogy-closer. But if the annual event wasn’t cause for enough hype already, some fans are taking the attendance of Ian McDiarmid as a sign that a certain Sheev Palpatine could be making a cameo in this December’s release.

McDiarmid’s inclusion was announced on the official Star Wars website, which issued the following statement:

“Ian McDiarmid, the actor who unforgettably played the galactic mastermind behind the rise of the Empire, transforming from the manipulative, scheming senator from Naboo into the ghastly cloaked figure of Darth Sidious, will join fans at Star Wars Celebration Chicago this spring.”

While many fans will find this to be exciting enough news in itself, some have gone one further to suggest that McDiarmid’s attendance might be heralding the return of Emperor Palpatine in Episode IX, if only in a brief callback.

To the theory’s credit, a Palpatine cameo certainly sounds like something the famously nostalgic Abrams might try if he found a reasonable enough excuse for it, though we wouldn’t read too much into McDiarmid’s return to Star Wars Celebration. After all, the actor also attended the 2017 version, but the Emperor was still nowhere to be seen in The Last Jedi later that year.

In any case, the site has also announced that McDiarmid will be joined at the event by Brian Herring, who plays half of the puppeteering team that operates BB-8, as well as other creatures and characters in the Sequel Trilogy. You’ll be able to catch this pair and a whole lot more if you attend this year’s Star Wars Celebration, which runs from April 11th to the 15th. After that, we’ll still have a good few months to wait before Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
