What the Covington Catholic debacle tells us about the internet today
On Friday, a conflict at the Lincoln Memorial captivated the country, moving quickly from viral tweets to the national news. Three groups — Catholic schoolboys in Make America Great Again hats, indigenous rights activists, and black nationalists — collided at the Capitol, and the ugly confrontation that followed has dominated the national conversation since.
What you take from the story will vary depending on how you identify, your politics, and what you make of the attending video footage. Most likely, you’ve made up your mind about it already.
My own feeling is that wearing a MAGA hat broadcasts a strong allegiance to a racist president and his racist policies, and to swarm around a Native American elder and block his path is to menace...

Most Americans accept that climate change is real and worrying
Most Americans are worried about climate change, and many think the government should fight it, according to the results of two independent polls released this week. The surveys suggest that Americans are finally warming to the scientific consensus about climate change: that it’s real, it’s happening now, and that we are causing it — but the big question is whether that will be enough to spark real political change.
One of the surveys, called Climate Change in the American Mind, comes out of a collaboration between Yale and George Mason University. It probes how a random sample of more than 1,100 people feel about global warming — such as whether they’re worried about it, for example, and whom they think it will harm. The other survey,...

Microsoft is trying to fight fake news with its Edge mobile browser
Microsoft has started warning users of its Edge mobile browser about untrustworthy news sites. The software giant has partnered with NewsGuard to provide warnings in its Edge browser for iOS and Android, and this functionality has been added this week as an optional setting. NewsGuard was founded by journalists Steven Brill and Gordon Crovitz, and rates sites based on a variety of criteria including their use of deceptive headlines, whether they repeatedly publish false content, and transparency regarding ownership and financing.
Microsoft first started offering an optional NewsGuard browser extension for Edge on the desktop version of Windows 10 last year, but the move to build this directly into the mobile version suggests the company...

Viacom acquires Pluto TV streaming service for $340 million
Viacom has acquiredought Pluto TV, the free ad-supported streaming service, for $340 million in cash. The service, which has around 12 million monthly active users, will operate as an independent subsidiary within the company, and will retain its existing CEO. Pluto TV currently offers around 100 ad-supported channels and a library of on-demand content, both of which can be viewed for free without a subscription.

As well as earning money from its existing back-catalogue through serving ads, Viacom is also hoping that Pluto TV will serve as a new way to promote and market its...

Xiaomi’s folding phone is the best we’ve seen so far
Xiaomi’s folding phone has been revealed in a teaser video from the company. Unlike other foldable phones we’ve seen recently, this certainly looks a more practical use for the technology.
Xiaomi doesn’t provide many details about its foldable phone, but Bin reveals the device in the video is simply an engineering model. Bin does note Xiaomi has conquered “a series of technical problems such as flexible folding screen technology, four-wheel drive folding shaft technology, flexible cover...

Amazon pulls its Echo Wall Clock due to connectivity issues
Just a little over a month after shipping its first Echo Wall Clocks, Amazon is pulling the product over connectivity issues. The Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern first tweeted about the delisting and The Verge has since independently confirmed it. In a statement, an Amazon spokesperson said, “We’re aware that a small number of customers have had issues with connectivity. We’re working hard to address this and plan to make Echo Wall Clock available again in the coming weeks.”
The clock’s listing is still live on Amazon, but it now reads “currently unavailable.” It’s unclear when exactly it’ll be back in stock or how extensive of a fix Amazon needs to apply; it could be a few weeks, like the company says, or the issue may run deeper and...

Drone sighting briefly halts flights to Newark International Airport
A flying drone has paused operations at a major airport once again — and this time, it’s in the United States. All inbound flights to Newark International Airport (EWR) were halted due to a drone sighting, an FAA spokesperson confirms to The Verge:
At approximately around 5 PM we received two reports from incoming flights into Newark that a drone was sighted at about 3500 feet above Teterboro, New Jersey. At that point, flights arriving into Newark were held for a short duration. Since then, and with no further drone sightings, arrivals have been resumed. However we still have a ground stop in place at other airports departing for Newark until a backlog of arrivals can be cleared. We expect that to be lifted soon.

AOC’s latest curved gaming monitors offer the important features at an appealing price
AOC launched two new 27-inch curved gaming monitors today as additions to its premium line. Curved monitors might still be an added expense that makes gaming more immersive for some and seems pointless for others, but AOC’s new offerings today expand the market a bit. More importantly, they deliver fast refresh rates, quick response times, and other gaming-centric features.
The AG273QCG is a gaming monitor with a 2560x1440 Quad HD screen boasting a refresh rate of 165Hz, 1ms response time, and support for Nvidia’s G-Sync. It costs $650 and is available from Amazon and Newegg. The other monitor, the AG273QCX, has a VA panel and shares the same screen resolution with a slightly lower max refresh rate of 144Hz. (The response time is still...

Netflix becomes first streaming company to join the MPAA
Netflix has become the first streaming service to join the ranks of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) Tuesday, Hollywood’s most powerful lobbying group, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It’s the first time an internet-based, non-studio has been granted membership to the 97 year-old trade association which represents six legacy Hollywood studios — all of whom endorsed the streaming company’s new membership.
“On behalf of the MPAA and its member companies, I am delighted to welcome Netflix as a partner,” MPAA’s CEO Charlie Rivkin said in a statement. “All of our members are committed to pushing the film and television industry forward, in both how we tell stories and how we reach audiences. European startup Starship Technologies is bringing its six-wheeled delivery robots to a college campus in Virginia. The company announced Monday that George Mason University will allow students to use their meal plans to have select food and drink orders delivered by the robots.
Starship says it’s providing George Mason with at least 25 robots, and orders from Blaze Pizza, Starbucks, and Dunkin’ will be available at the start. More will be added in the “coming weeks,” and each order will cost $1.99 extra.
The delivery bots can carry up to 20 pounds worth of goods, and they’ve been tested in various cities around the world over the last few years, often in partnership with services like DoorDash or Postmates. Starship’s robots are able...

Twitter is rolling out a new web interface, including an emoji button
Twitter has started to roll out a new interface for its web users that includes several key features, like a newly designed emoji button.
The most important changes are tiny shortcuts to make tweeting easier. A large, dedicated button in the tweet box makes it easier to add an emoji, an updated trending section appears on the right-hand side of the page, and little aesthetic updates make it easier to see who’s involved in a conversation. These changes, alongside the way Twitter’s desktop version has condensed from three columns into two, should make it easier to both read and send tweets.

NASA is replacing one of the astronauts on Boeing’s first crewed flight to the space station
NASA is replacing one of the astronauts assigned to fly on the first crewed test launch of the CST-100 Starliner, a capsule being developed by Boeing to take passengers to the International Space Station. NASA announced today that astronaut Eric Boe will no longer be flying on the mission due to unspecified “medical reasons.” Instead, NASA astronaut E. Michael “Mike” Fincke will take Boe’s place.
Boe was assigned to this flight in August of 2018, along with eight other astronauts taking part in the inaugural missions for NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. (In fact, Boe’s been involved with the program for the last three years.) Through this initiative, two private companies — SpaceX and Boeing — have been developing capsules to ferry...

The Dark Knight Fans Remember Heath Ledger On The Anniversary Of His Death
On January 22nd, 2008, Heath Ledger passed away after taking a fatal mix of prescription drugs, and on the eleventh anniversary of his death, fans of The Dark Knight took to social media to remember the actor and his most celebrated role.
Though the casting of Ledger as Bruce Wayne’s most famous adversary was met with heavy fan backlash when the news was first announced, it became all too clear that these objections were premature once Christopher Nolan’s film made its way to cinemas six months after Ledger’s passing. And in these last 24 hours, the social media outpouring makes it evident that the star still holds a special place in hearts of many a filmgoer:
On #OscarNoms day, we remember Heath Ledger who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as The #Joker in 2008’s #Batman film The Dark Knight.

11 YEARS without Heath Ledger "The Dark Knight"
pic.twitter.com/diV8PEVlEN
— olga ferrão (@AglloMuniz) January 22, 2019
With The Dark Knight hitting its tenth anniversary last year, 2018 saw several of Ledger’s friends and associates reflect on his turn as the Joker. Maggie Gyllenhaal, for instance, recalled her first time seeing her co-star immersed in character when she spoke on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, arguing that it’s rare to see a performance in a big budget action movie that manages hold your attention amidst all the “explosions and huge stunt scenes.”
The Dark Knight co-writer Jonathan Nolan, meanwhile, told The Hollywood Reporter back in August that neither he nor the studio really “got” why his brother wanted Ledger for the role, but Christopher Nolan “just stuck to his guns,” arguing that “It was a question of not giving the fans what they’re asking for but what they want.” Needless to say, the fans were ultimately pretty thrilled with the Joker they got, and Ledger’s take on the character has continued to influence comic book villains and screen psychos ever since.
