Fans of Star Wars are sharing their ideas for a comedy take on the classic sci-fi franchise.
The discussion took place in the r/StarWars subreddit, where fans participated in a hilarious thought experiment devised by aptly-named user –TheForce–, who asked them to pitch a jocular version of the iconic films.
Though Robin hasn’t yet appeared in the DCEU, the character has still played a very important role in the overarching story. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice showed that Batman keeps a defaced Robin costume in the Batcave, which has been defaced by the Joker with “Jokes on you Batman!”.
It was later confirmed that this was the DCEU Dick Grayson’s suit, who was kidnapped and tortured to death by the Joker and Harley Quinn. Batman later got revenge, smashing the Joker’s teeth out and ruining his smile before capturing him and Harley. But, as we saw in Batman v Superman, the death of Robin clearly sent him on a dark path that he only recovered from after finding a new ‘family’ in Justice League.
As a globetrotting spy saga with a preference for outlandish gadgets, one-liners, sultry femme fatales, and convoluted plots that more often than not tend to involve a villain with a physical deformity who dwells in an underground lair, the James Bond franchise has hardly been lauded for its realism or prescience over the last 60 years.
However, fans have started singing the praises of 1997’s underrated Pierce Brosnan effort Tomorrow Never Dies, which was initially dismissed as an inferior successor to the all-time great 007 adventure GoldenEye when it first hit theaters. At the time, Jonathan Pryce’s media mogul Elliot Carver wasn’t deemed a top-tier Bond baddie, but Redditors are pointing out just how far ahead of its time Roger Spottiswoode’s action blockbuster turned out to be.
It was inevitable that Vivarium was going to split opinion down the middle when it was released for mass consumption in March 2020, with the first reactions emanating from the premiere at the previous year’s Cannes Film Festival hinting that the surrealist sci-fi psychological horror wasn’t going to be for everyone.
Sure enough, that discord has been reflected in the reactions from critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, Vivarium holds a stellar 72 percent score, but users have downvoted it to a less than impressive 38 percent. On Metacritic, the two sides of the divide are in disagreement once again at a respective 64/100 and 5.2/10, while almost 60,000 IMDb votes have settled on a 5.8/10.
Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy remains one of the most monumental achievements in filmmaking, with the director delivering three back-to-back classics that combined to form one of the greatest big screen sagas ever told, and each installment ended up dripping in critical and commercial acclaim. Sadly, The Hobbit was little more than a pale imitation.
Stretching slim source material into two blockbuster fantasy epics was a tall enough task for original director Guillermo del Toro to accomplish, but when the decision was made to expand The Hobbit into a trilogy of its own when production was almost underway, Jackson had his back against the wall.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is stacked from top to bottom with icons, fan favorites, and cult heroes, but not everyone instantly warms to each new face introduced into the world’s biggest and most popular franchise.
Perhaps the best example to date is Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, who spent her first six and a half years as little more than a background player, before the double whammy of WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness transformed Scarlet Witch into one of the MCU’s most popular figures.
Usually, it’s pretty easy to determine what movies can justifiably be deemed indisputable failures, but the normal logic most definitely doesn’t apply to James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
On paper, the hybrid of sequel and reboot was an unmitigated disaster, failing to recoup its mammoth $185 million budget in theaters. To put that into perspective, The Suicide Squad topped out at $168 million globally after its theatrical run had drawn to a close, whereas David Ayer’s opener had netted $133 million through its first three days in the United States alone back in 2016.
Cult classic sci-fi horror Event Horizon has been back in the headlines recently after celebrating its 25th anniversary, and Paul W.S. Anderson’s box office bomb is arguably more popular after a quarter of a century than it’s ever been.
The filmmaker’s original cut left the top brass at studio Paramount aghast at the gnarly body horror they’d just witnessed, with the theatrical release markedly different from what Anderson had in mind for the existential terror. After being ignored by paying patrons and falling well short of recouping the $60 million budget, Event Horizon went on to become something of a phenomenon on home video.
Rodrigo Prieto, the Mexican Director of Photography behind some of the most acclaimed films of the last few decades, has confirmed his involvement in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, directing special words of praise towards producer and star of the film Margot Robbie.
According to Mexican news outlet Milenio, at the launch of Netflix’s new Que México Se Vea campaign, which will bring Mexican cinema to the forefront of the streaming giant, Prieto, the Oscar-nominated Director of Photography known for his work in Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain as well as his extended collaboration with Martin Scorsese, shared some insight on his contribution to Barbie.
Aug. 11 marked the 39th birthday of the God of Thunder himself, Chris Hemsworth, with his wife Elsa Pataky sharing a sweet Instagram post to mark her spouse’s big day. And in doing so, the Australian actress revealed her own sneaky cameo role in Hemsworth’s most recent Marvel blockbuster, Thor: Love and Thunder.
Pataky, recently seen headlining Netflix actioner Interceptor, posted a bunch of quirky pics featuring her husband. If you scroll along to the third image in the post below, you’ll find a black-and-white behind-the-scenes photo from the set of Love and Thunder. Yes, that was Pataky looking totally unrecognizable as the Wolf Woman that Thor locks lips with in one scene.
The Duffer Brothers are comparing the success of the widely praised Stranger Things to another smash hit release — Top Gun: Maverick.
The fourth season of the supernatural horror and the Tom Cruise-led blockbuster may have both dropped on May 27, but that’s not the reason the showrunner duo is comparing the two. In an interview with IndieWire, Matt Duffer shared that the pair greatly admired the “good, simple story” of Top Gun, which is all the filmmakers have loved to do over the years.
When it comes to the world of Star Wars and the ambitious narrative that resides at its heart, George Lucas never cared much for the concept of obstacles, all he ever saw were solutions and explanations that only made the canon more expansive, even down to the injuries that the cast sustained outside the set.
Recently, the fandom has dug up an old interview from Episode III – Revenge of the Sith that explains how Lucas, in all of his precedented cunning, immediately came up with a way to work Aussie actor Rohan Nichol’s shaving cut into the story. Unfortunately, since Captain Raymus Antilles only appears for a brief few seconds towards the end of the movie, a lot of fans have probably even missed the fact that his face was all slashed up in a few places.
The wizarding world of Harry Potter is a rich and interesting one, loved by millions of readers and moviegoers across the globe. Of course, no matter how good the world-building is, if it doesn’t have characters we love coming back to, then there is no point, and in this case, one of those characters has given many a good chuckle.
Ron Weasley is the second youngest of the Weasley family and has grown up under the shadow of his impressive older brothers and trouble-making twins. It seems that in order to cope with the chaos of his family, Ron has built himself a fairly robust sense of humor, one that has alleviated more serious moments and brought a smile even in the darkest of times.
With the Infinity Saga firmly in the rear-view mirror, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now barreling forward while still keeping one foot rooted firmly in its past.
Phase Four has introduced a bevvy of fresh faces into the franchise who are all set to play major roles moving forward, but Phase One legacy players like Nick Fury, Bruce Banner, Thor, and Hawkeye are all still integral cogs in the machine. It’s a deft balancing act, one that’s brought a slew of instant fan favorites to the fore, but who ranks as top of the pile?
Following up greatness is hardly an easy task, but there was enough about Beverly Hills Cop II to suggest that Eddie Murphy’s return as Axel Foley could match the success of its predecessor, which went down as the biggest hit of 1984, helped launch the leading man into the Hollywood stratosphere, and became an instant action comedy classic.
For one thing, Murphy was still one of the most popular and bankable stars in the industry, one who could put butts in seats based on his name alone, while Tony Scott stepped in to replace Martin Brest behind the camera in what was the director’s first feature since Top Gun had taken everyone’s breath away the previous summer.
Very few people can boast about going head-to-head against an iconic extraterrestrial in their first ever starring role, but Prey’s Dakota Beavers is one of them.
As the fifth installment in the Predator franchise continues to enjoy critical success, the newcomer is still taking it all in. In a conversation with The Wrap, the actor shared the extensive audition process he went through before heading to L.A. for an in-person audition.
In the wake of Prey becoming a critical darling, another Predator alum is heaping praise on the latest installment in the classic franchise.
Bill Duke, who starred as Sergeant Mac Elliot in the original, took to Twitter to give some well deserved props to the film and its lead actress Amber Midthunder. The popular character actor stated that she “has a bright career ahead of her,” and welcomed her to the Predator family.
Giancarlo Esposito is a phenomenal actor that has gained a new slew of fans for his chilling villainous performances in television. Now, MCU supporters are hoping he can bring his cold and calculating acting energy to the largest film franchise in history.
A Reddit user kicked off the conversation, believing the character could take one of three unique roles in the Marvel universe: Professor X, Doctor Doom, or Magneto.
It’s been a couple of days since the new regime at Warner Bros. Discovery was placed under the microscope and given both barrels by the DCEU fandom, so the news that The Flash star Ezra Miller had been charged with felony burglary didn’t really come as all that much of a shock to anyone.
Having mercilessly axed Batgirl for being too big for HBO Max but not big enough for theaters, there was little chance the Scarlet Speedster’s long-gestating solo debut was going to suffer from a similar fate, with the project coming attached to a price tag said to be hovering around the $200 million mark.
The consensus is that a film’s sequel should continue on the narrative established in the original film. However, there are some sequels that have been released that not only went in a different direction, but ignored some plot lines from the previous entry.
A couple of Reddit users gathered yesterday to discuss some of the sequels that shifted away from stories already put in place, only to revisit them afresh in the next film.
There have been a few glimpses of the X-Men across the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019 and consequently the rights to the mutants franchise. Although the crossover of Magneto, Professor X and the gang with the MCU’s intricate web of characters has been long coveted by Marvel Comics fans, there is understandable general anxiety about how Kevin Feige is planning to make it all happen.
Despite the Evan Peters tease in WandaVision, the surprise Sir Patrick Stewart cameo in Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness, and the reveal that Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan is actually a mutant, there is little information about whether fans should expect the return of the original cast of the X-Men live-action franchise, or prepare for a selective or complete recasting. Regardless of who will play who, fans’ biggest request is that everyone’s backstories are portrayed with respect.
Star Wars is not just an iconic franchise spanning decades of films, series, games, and spin-offs. For many fans, it’s also been the source of some of the most mindful quotes and life lessons they’ve learned.
A Reddit discussion has spurred many Star Wars fanatics to reveal the most important lesson learned from the vast and growing universe spanning multiple comics, films, television shows, and responsible for some of the most popular characters in the history of cinema.
San Diego Comic-Con came and went without any news, but instead of becoming too downhearted, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans instead immediately turned their attention to next month’s D23 as the potential destination for some major Deadpool 3 updates.
After all, not only have the Merc with a Mouth’s first two solo adventures finally made their way to Disney Plus, but Ryan Reynolds is officially back in training ahead of his impending feature-length introduction into the world’s biggest franchise, which feels as though it’s been the longest time coming.
For a movie that suffered from its fair share of twists, turns, and setbacks during development, it’s fascinating to think how differently 1980s action cinema could have evolved if Beverly Hills Cop had turned out any other way than it did.
Mickey Rourke was the first name offered the role of Axel Foley, while Martin Scorsese and David Cronenberg both turned down the chance to direct. Sylvester Stallone famously came aboard and rewrote the entire script to the studio’s dissatisfaction, which ultimately let to the actor taking his ideas and turning them into cult classic Cobra instead.
For a species bred specifically as trophy hunters, the Predator franchise has repeatedly revealed that the titular intergalactic travelers aren’t particularly great at their chosen profession.
Whether it’s being defeated by a mud-smeared Arnold Schwarzenegger, a sweaty Danny Glover in a mustard yellow shirt, Adrien Brody wielding an axe, Sanaa Lathan’s tour guide, and now Amber Midthunder’s aspiring tracker in acclaimed prequel Prey, the dreadlocked death dealers don’t exactly have a solid track record at succeeding on Earth.
