MCU newcomer Xochitl Gomez speaks out on the pressures of ‘Doctor Strange 2’

Anyone who has watched the latest MCU film is aware that America Chavez is at the core of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The plot revolves around her multiversal power set, with young actor Xochitl Gomez going head-to-head with heavyweights like Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen.

That’s a lot of pressure considering Gomez was just 15 when the shooting of the film began, but she delivered her best and ensured that America will go on to have a bright future in the MCU. Now, in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gomez has gone into detail about the method she opted to approach the role:

“It was very important for me to keep that youthful, fake-it-till-you-make-it kind of vibe. In this movie, there’s a lot of heavy stuff going on. It’s not easy when you’re a teenager and you have all this pressure and crazy stuff going on around you. You have to remember that you are a kid. You’re allowed to make mistakes, and we’re all learning.”

It also seems that the MCU veterans took her under their wing, especially Elizabeth Olsen, who Gomez singles out as a source of “great advice” and guidance.

“She [Olsen] did give me great advice. She told me to never hesitate to give Marvel any notes or any opinions I have because they really want to hear my input. At first, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, really? I don’t know, okay.’ But I did take her advice, and it was really rewarding. Especially at my age, I [focused on] some of the small things that I would say, like, ‘I feel America would do this or that.’ Sam would be like, ‘Let’s do it!'”

The end result is — appropriately — marvellous and all indications are that America Chavez is destined to become a central feature in the MCU. The comics may also give us a clue as to what Marvel Studios’ eventual plans for the character are. In an issue of All-New Hawkeye, the characters travel 30 years into the future to discover that America is now ‘Captain America Chavez,’ the leader of the Avengers.

So, perhaps one day (hopefully not too soon), we may see Sam Wilson bequeath that iconic shield to Chavez just as Steve Rogers passed it down to him. It will be a long road until we get to that point, but we’re betting it’s going to be one hell of a ride.

‘Star Wars’ finally puts all the pieces together with an official timeline

Arguably even more so than the MCU, the disparate pieces that make up the entire Star Wars mythology are spread far and wide. Much of that owes to the fact that George Lucas’ seminal space soap opera is fast approaching its 50th anniversary, with Disney’s acquisition of the franchise — and subsequent retcon of the entire Expanded Universe — only further muddying the waters.

So where, exactly, do shows like The Mandalorian, Rebels and The Clone Wars sit, in the chronological history of a galaxy far, far away? Thankfully, the Mouse House has finally pulled its finger out and done the hard work for us all.

Disney has yet to deliver its own version of the full image, but while we wait, Reddit user u/jasmosis has handily stitched the assets, originally sent out via email, together to form one constant series of events.

No surprises here as far as the three core trilogies are concerned, then, though we suspect more than a few eyebrows will be furrowed by Star Wars Resistance. The short-lived animated series had its original run back in 2018 and followed Kazuda Xiono, a pilot of the New Republic who finds themselves assigned to keeping a close eye on the First Order during its fledging years and as a potential threat as the Galactic Empire’s successor.

As they have yet to release, Rogue Squadron and Andor have yet to make their mark on the timeline, and it’ll be interesting to see when all’s said and done, where they’ll come to rest.

Jon Hamm reveals if he’s still interested in playing X-Men’s Mr. Sinister

It’s weird to think about it now, but Fox’s X-Men franchise was actually building up to the arrival of a major new villain before it was swallowed up by Marvel Studios. Mr. Sinister, real name: Nathaniel Essex, was alluded to be on his way in X-Men: Apocalypse, Deadpool 2, and The New Mutants, but the franchise was cancelled before he could appear. Mad Men icon Jon Hamm was even hired to play him for a New Mutants post-credits scene that was never shot.

When the X-Men eventually make their way into the MCU, however, you can bet that Marvel will want to go with characters that haven’t appeared in the Fox movies before. So Mr. Sinister is a prime contender for the team’s next nemesis. But would Hamm be interested in returning to the part that he never got to portray? You betcha.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Hamm was asked about the potential for him to get Sinister in the MCU, and the actor made clear that he would love to board the Marvel universe as he’s been a lifelong fan.

“That franchise — it’s so weird to talk about it that way — but I was a big fan of just reading the comic books when I was a kid, the X-Men of the ’80s,” Hamm said. “And it remains. I remain a fan. It’s an interesting, very cool story, for want of a better word. I think that what they’ve been able to do, and what I think their plans — and I’ve talked to people that plan these kind of things — with how they are expanding these stories, and the wit and the creativity with which they are presenting these stories, really gets back to the old way that comics were presented.”

Hamm went on to stress that he would “for sure” play Sinister under Kevin Feige’s studio as he’s so impressed with the MCU’s recent expansion into the multiverse.

“Something like the most recent Spider-Man, which was such a cool iteration of that idea of the Multiverse and what’s happening and how three things can exist at the same time, it’s very creative,” he continued. “The way that they lean into that creativity is something that, for sure, I’d be happy to be a part of.”

To be clear, while Hamm was in talks with Fox to appear as Sinister in New Mutants, he never actually got to shoot anything as the character. If you’ll recall, Fox’s plans to reshoot the YA-themed spinoff flick were aborted after the Disney takeover. However, the original intention was to have Hamm cameo in that film before having a larger role in Channing Tatum’s Gambit solo, a project that Tatum is still heartbroken never happened.

While we wait to see if Hamm could ever ham it up as Mr. Sinister in the MCU, he stars opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick, releasing May 27.

Believe it or not, there are negative reactions to ‘Doctor Strange 2’

Counting down the days before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releases in theaters worldwide and after sifting through all the early reviews, not all of them are as positive as Marvel fans might have hoped. As the sequel to Doctor Strange (2016), the 28th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the fifth film in Marvel’s Phase Four, Multiverse of Madness has promised to be bigger and better than previous Marvel projects, but some of the feedback is completely contradicting all prior expectations.

Skimming through Twitter, the majority of reviews are favorable and credit Cumberbatch and Olsen as the driving forces behind Sam Raimi’s sequel, but despite the hype shrouding judgment, some fans are definitive on the fact that Multiverse of Madness pales in comparison to other Marvel films. Some have called it a “disappointing entry” whereas others have labeled it “controversial” and warned that Marvel followers may be “divided” by some risky writing choices and “BIG decisions” that will “definitely spark a fire amongst fans.”

One recurring issue that Marvel has faced over the years originates with the argument that female characters are given less three-dimensional character arcs than male characters, which certainly seems to be the case when heroines like Pepper Potts and Black Widow fade into the background. Although Cumberbatch and Olsen deserve equal praise, it seems that Wanda Maximoff’s character arc could be destroying her glowing reputation as a fan favorite.

While Phase 4 has been my favorite of the MCU, I was let down by #DoctorStrangeMultiverseOfMadness. Besides the picky critiques, some feedback has blatantly bashed Multiverse of Madness‘ “paper-thin plot” and compared it to Iron Man 3 as Marvel’s most “subversive” film yet. Apparently, anyone who is “way too invested in these characters” will be met with a whole heap of disappointment, but these peeves are merely a matter of perspective.

Even though Multiverse of Madness supposedly falls short in some categories, its stylistic visuals, comedic elements and befitting score saved it from a one-way trip to the bottom of the barrel. As with many films nowadays, it starts off slow, but the action-packed craziness is worth the wait.

‘Evil Dead Rise’ is so terrifying, it’s going to ‘knock people’s socks off’, says Sam Raimi

Evil Dead Rise is expected to release on HBO Max sometime this year, much to the delight of horror fans, and the frightening fifth installment is rumored to be almost as terrifying as 2013’s Evil Dead remake. Now, executive producer Sam Raimi is adding fuel to the fire when it comes to these rumors by describing the upcoming horror film as a “terrifying” experience to be had.

While speaking with Slash Film, Raimi touched upon the editing cuts that are being done in post-production for the movie, including several changes being made by director Lee Cronin that Raimi has yet to see — but he promises the final edition is going to fulfill horror fans’ expectations, stating:

I’ve seen a rough cut [of ‘Evil Dead Rise’], a medium fine cut, and a fine cut. There’s probably a few changes that Lee Cronin is making that I haven’t seen, but it’s great. It’s terrifying and it’s going to knock people’s socks off.

The Evil Dead franchise is one of the most memorable horror franchises of the ‘80s, with the original film written and directed by Raimi himself. The popular franchise has spawned several sequels and adaptations, many of which included franchise veteran Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, who serves as an executive producer alongside Raimi for the newest film.

While there are surely still a few months left to go until the film’s release, folks can rest assured that there will be an abundance of blood and violence in the newest installment. In fact, a recent R rating for the movie certainly backs up Raimi’s cryptic comments. Check back here for a future release date for Evil Dead Rise.

Sam Raimi opens up about his rocky relationship with Venom in ‘Spider-Man 3’

Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 still rank among the greatest superhero movies of all time. Director Sam Raimi perfectly captured and updated the 1960s stories, maintaining Stan Lee’s philosophy and style while adding a unique spin of his own. And then there’s 2007’s Spider-Man 3.

Tales of the tension between Raimi and the studio executives are legendary, with Avi Arad demanding that Venom be added to the movie. This left an already busy movie about Sandman and Harry Osborn becoming the new Green Goblin feeling overstuffed, though at least we got some good gifs of Tobey Maguire dancing out of it.

Now Raimi has looked back at Spider-Man 3 and explained why he didn’t want Venom in the movie. Speaking with Uproxx, he confirmed that he hasn’t seen either of the Tom Hardy movies and said:

It was really more just that I didn’t understand the character that well. It wasn’t close to my heart. The best thing I like about Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s Spider-Man is that they made relatable characters that I understand. Even if they were confused, like Norman Osborn, they still have goodness in their heart. They want them to do the right thing, or Peter Parker. Or even J. Jonah Jameson has goodness in his heart.

When I read about Venom, which I hadn’t read as a kid, I had to catch up on it when they wanted him to be in the movie. I didn’t recognize enough humanity within that character to be able to identify with him properly. That’s really what it boils down to.

Raimi’s MCU debut Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is picking up great reviews ahead of its release this Friday, so the famed horror director may soon be tapped again by Marvel for some more work. But Raimi set tongues wagging recently when he said he’d jump at the chance to reunite with Tobey Maguire for Spider-Man 4.

Perhaps this actually happening is unlikely, though the wave of positivity shown by audiences to Tobey Maguire’s appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home should give Sony and Marvel Studios some evidence that it’d be a hit.

But before all that will come an insanely fun-looking trip through the weirder corners of the Marvel multiverse in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will hit theaters on May 6.

In the wake of the smash-hit Spider-Man: No Way Home, talk has begun about Raimi and Maguire reuniting to finally make Spider-Man 4. Raimi has said he’d love to do it if the opportunity presented itself, but admitted that it might be a tough sell to Sony and Marvel Studios given the popularity of Tom Holland’s Spidey.

However, with the Spider-Verse blossoming into life, audiences would almost certainly understand what was going on with the character. A movie about Maguire’s Peter Parker and Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane trying to live a normal domestic life (perhaps with spider-powered teenage daughter May Parker tossed into the mix) would be a great ride.

In the meantime, 2002’s Spider-Man remains a fun watch. Sure some of the effects are a little dated, but it’s got style and heart, and both go a long way.

Lady Gaga has just dropped her single for Top Gun: Maverick and clearly understood the assignment. “Hold My Hand” is a thumping piano-led power ballad with major big hair vibes, with Gaga giving her impressive pipes a full workout.

The song is going down a storm in the comments, with a consensus building that we’ll see Lady Gaga nominated for yet another Best Original Song Oscar at the 2023 awards. The long-awaited sequel will touch down in theaters later this month after an exceptionally long gestation. The initial shoot took place way back in 2018, with it planned for release in summer 2019. Then, after some test screenings, they realized the flight sequences needed more pizzaz and went ahead with extensive reshoots.

Then COVID hit, and the movie was promptly put on the back burner for two long years. Now that wait is finally over, Tom Cruise will be rocketing back onto the big screen as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who’s charged with training a new group of hot young pilots, with Val Kilmer’s Iceman now an Admiral overseeing the project. Expect big egos, hi-octane action, and the most ludicrously expensive death-dealing vehicles the military-industrial complex can conceive of.

Sure, this movie might be propaganda for spending billions on fighter jets that will almost certainly never be used in combat, but on the other hand, they look really cool, so who’s to say what’s good or bad?

‘Deadpool’ artist reveals Ryan Reynolds’s super dedication to poke fun at Hugh Jackman

Deadpool is an extremely aware superhero, so aware that he is actually able to see beyond his own cinematic universe into others and into our real world, often breaking the fourth wall to talk to the audience. One thing the merc with a mouth is a big fan of is making fun of Hugh Jackman and his superhero counterpart, Wolverine. Apparently, Reynolds was extremely dedicated to ensuring these jokes got into the film right from the get-go.

Reynolds and Jackman have been engaged in a lovable pseudo feud for some time now. It seemingly originated from when the actor first played Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine back in 2008, and it didn’t end there. This feud continued with the Deadpool movies and apparently, Reynolds is the reason behind it as storyboard artist, Jay Oliva has shared an image on Twitter to project how determined the Free Guy star was to make jokes at Jackman’s expense.

The image shows the storyboard artwork for a scene towards the end of the film, where Deadpool’s romantic interest lifts off his mask (à la Spider-Man), only to find he has stapled a picture of Jackman’s face to his own. They even used the same picture of Jackman in the film as they originally did in the storyboard.

Not only does Reynolds troll Jackman within the films, he constantly roasts X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a film which was panned by critics and fans. It saw a vastly different Deadpool, who is completely altered and has his mouth sealed shut as he goes up against Wolverine. In fact, this version is so detested that the superhero went full meta in his last outing as the merc with a mouth as he used Cable’s time travelling device to kill the Deadpool in the X-Men film.

Despite their friendship starting with a film Reynolds dislikes so much, the two Marvel actors have a lot of love for each other, with their barbs and jabs often turning into compliments and praise.

As evidenced above, the two put a lot of effort into their fake fights, and the internet loves it. In fact, director Shawn Levy, who directed Reynolds in The Adam Project, Free Guy and will be directing Deadpool 3, is determined to get the duo in a film together, so maybe we can see some of that chemistry on the big screen soon.

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ promo art includes a mustachioed Korg

There’s a lot to be excited about in Thor: Love and Thunder, but what MCU fans are looking forward to the most is being reunited with Taika Waititi’s affable rock monster Korg. Introduced in Thor: Ragnarok and then popping up again in Avengers: Endgame, the peek at him in the Love and Thunder trailer indicates he’ll be showing Thor the first victims of Gorr the God Butcher’s deicidal rampage.

Marvel Studios has further teased his highly awaited appearance with some newly released promo art, which shows off Korg’s dapper new look: he’s clad in barbarian-looking furry armor and sporting a perfectly groomed mustache. Check him out:

It’s unknown whether this promo art has made the leap to live-action, as audiences may wonder why a rock man has started growing hair. Then again, perhaps it’s simply a mossy growth, making it some kind of moss-tache.

Waititi clearly loves voicing Korg so one can expect him to continue playing the character in future MCU projects as well. One hint of a potential appearance came in the trailer reaction video for Free Guy, with Korg appearing alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. This was technically the merc with the mouth’s first MCU appearance, so if the two are friends, we can expect Korg to pop up in 2024’s Deadpool 3.

But first Korg has to survive the cataclysmic events of Love and Thunder. Jane Foster taking up Mjolnir will probably rattle some cages in the new Asgard, while everyone is busy cooking up plans against whatever dark plans Gorr has for the surviving Norse pantheon. Here’s hoping the God Butcher gets at least one stony punch to the kisser on the way.

Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on July 8.

The great James Bond casting debate begins after early contenders are named

No Time to Die was a fine swansong for Daniel Craig’s James Bond, who will go down in history as one of the most successful versions of the character. But with his tenure now finally at a (very conclusive) end, audiences are wondering who’s next in line to be awarded the coveted license to kill.

Variety recently run an interview with Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli, who confirmed that “it’s going to take some time” to find someone to fill Craig’s shoes. Speaking at the opening night of Macbeth on Broadway, she said:

“It’s a big decision. It’s not just casting a role. It’s about a whole rethink about where we’re going. I’m just here celebrating one of the greatest actors on the planet, Daniel Craig.”

But the article also cites a number of actors who “have been whispered about in relation to the coveted role.” Now it’s worth underlining that Variety’s article doesn’t confirm the names of the actors who are officially in the running to get the part. It merely lists some of the actors — Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill, Idris Elba and Jacob Elordi — who have been talked about as potential future James Bonds.

The first three are popular fan choices, though it’s highly unlikely that they would want to commit to the Bond franchise. While Henry Cavill is committed to multiple seasons of Netflix’s The Witcher, at 49 Idris Elba is probably now too old for the role. As for Tom Hardy, he has refused to share any comments on the possibility. Seeing that we have had multiple movies about a Bond at the end of his career, it is possible they’ll go with someone younger, so of these four actors, Elordi is the most plausible candidate.

Even though being agent 007 is an alluring prospect, playing this role requires a multi-year commitment, strict rules on how you conduct yourself professionally and socially, and ties you into a tonne of marketing campaigns. It’s telling that even with the dangling carrot of millions of dollars, Craig repeatedly tried to quit the franchise.

2022 is also the 60th anniversary of the debut Bond film Dr. No, so chances are good we’ll see an official announcement in early October. While the rumor mills continue spinning, churning out different names for the next elite spy, only time will tell whether the Bond fans actually managed to correctly guess who is destined to lead the franchise.
