‘Doctor Strange 2’ fans go back and forth on the Tom Cruise rumors

While things haven’t quite reached Spider-Man: No Way Home levels, when any character to have even glanced in the direction of someone associated with Peter Parker being linked to a cameo, speculation nonetheless runs rampant around Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

So far, the only surprise guest we can bank on showing up is Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier, which leaves the playing field wide open for internet-breaking shocks. One of the most popular recurring slices of scuttlebutt is that Tom Cruise will show up as a Superior Iron Man variant of Tony Stark, although nobody seems too sure as to where it originated.

In that time we’ve seen some shoddy Photoshops claiming to be behind the scenes images showing Cruise in a motion capture suit, while plenty of fans are adamant his alternate version of the genius billionaire playboy philanthropist was teased in plain sight during the first trailer.

As you can see below, the debate has rather neatly been boiled down to one tweet and one reply, which perfectly encapsulates both sides of the divide.

It should be noted that we can’t rule out with 100% certainty that the A-list megastar isn’t in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness until either May 6, or three days prior when the review embargo lifts and the internet inevitably becomes awash with spoilers.

With a running time of just 126 minutes, there’s not a huge amount of screentime to go around, so there’s every chance the movie won’t feature anywhere near as many cameos as some may be expecting.

Streaming subscribers get caught up in a labyrinthine mystery thriller

Charlie Hunnam might be handsome, jacked, and charming, but he’s a much better fit for being an actor than he is a movie star. That’s not designed to be a slight on his talents, but his performances in Pacific Rim and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword leave plenty to be desired when compared to his work in the likes of Papillon, The Lost City of Z, Jungleland, The Gentlemen, and Last Looks.

The latter in particular deserved to find a much bigger audience than it did, with the literary adaptation quietly landing on VOD this past February. The labyrinthine crime thriller marked Hunnam’s first executive producer credit, and he clearly invested a lot of time and effort into doing Charlie Waldo justice.

The idiosyncratic former cop and private investigator lives alone in the woods, vowing never to own more than 100 items at any given time. When a famous TV actor becomes the prime suspect in the murder of his wife, Waldo is drawn out of isolation and plunged into a mystery that involves organized crime, industry executives, double-crosses, cover ups, and the disappearance of his former flame.

As per FlixPatrol, the underrated gem and potential future cult classic has been going down a treat among iTunes customers, having risen up the most-watched rankings by reaching the Top 10 in multiple countries.

Backed by an eclectic ensemble that finds Mel Gibson on delightfully hammy form as prestigious British thespian Alastair Pinch, there’s an awful lot going on in Last Looks at any given time, but it hits plenty of the right notes to deliver a winning old-fashioned thriller that twists and turns its way towards a fitting resolution.

‘Lightyear’ producer has no interest in a Disney Plus release

With the reinvigoration of cinemas, Pixar is moving forward with its planned theatrical release of the highly anticipated Toy Story spinoff Lightyear. For Galyn Susman, who serves as one of the film’s producers, debuting on the big screen was a no-brainer. 

In an interview with Digital Spy, Susman insisted that there was a significant push for a theatrical release, as opposed to the film debuting on Disney Plus like several other high-profile pandemic-era Mouse House titles. 

“There was never a debate on any of the films. All of our films are made for the big screen and if your fans can’t go to the theater, it’s great that we’ve had Disney Plus as that option because we do want families to be able to come and see these films together. Knock on something, unless something goes really bad, we are going to be in theaters because everybody can now come to theaters, and we want people back to theaters so we can have that theatrical experience together.”

In the past two years, Pixar has released the animated films Soul, and more recently, Turning Red, on the Disney Plus, but as theater attendance is back on the rise, Lightyear is looking to offer a full movie experience by opting for a wide rollout. 

Lightyear serves as an origin story for the popular Toy Story character Buzz Lightyear, and stars Chris Evans as the voice of the titular space ranger. Rounding out the cast of the film are Keke Palmer, Dale Soules, Taika Waititi, Peter Sohn, Uzo Aduba, James Brooklyn, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isaiah Whitlock. The film is scheduled to be released on June 17.

Terry Crews would love a ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ heist movie

After eight hilarious seasons together, fans of hit sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine said goodbye to their favorite set of detectives last year, but Terry Crews seems to be stirring the pot of a hopeful reunion. 

While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor and author gushed about his former castmates, tagging them as his family, before expressing a serious interest in the gang getting back together for a film that centers on their seasonal Halloween heist episodes. 

“Oh my God. I am definitely still interested. I still think we could do a heist movie. We always had our yearly heist episode and I think that would be brilliant, especially with Peacock and all the great things that NBC can already do. I think that every cast member will be down for us to do a nice hour and a half episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, make it three episodes all involving the heist and a new heist and it would be all wonderful. I love, love, love my castmates. I spent eight years with these guys and they’re truly family, and I miss them every day.”

Since Crews and the rest of the gang must have had a wonderful time together, we’re hoping they can find the time in their schedules to come together for one last heist. Stephanie Beatriz already admitted she would love a revival, so fingers are crossed.

It’s not unusual for TV shows to offer fans a final feature to bid farewell, and the slate of recent revivals coupled with the enduring popularity of Brooklyn Nine-Nine should ensure that there’s always a chance a movie may come to life.

Keke Palmer praises Jordan Peele for his normalization of Black-led stories

Emmy Award-winning actress Keke Palmer will be starring in the upcoming Jordan Peele thriller Nope and, in an interview with PopSugar, expressed fervent enthusiasm for the day that it releases. And while the leading lady remained quiet about further plot details, she gave a particular nod to Peele, who she believes is playing a pivotal role in normalizing Black stories that don’t have a catch to them.

“I just love that he is normalizing Black people being leads and stars in films and it not having to be for particular reasons,” says Palmer. “It’s just, they happen to be Black as opposed to the gag is…”

A good many folk will echo Palmer’s happiness with Peele’s approach; Hollywood has a history of portraying marginalized individuals quite poorly, especially Black people, who historically have been typecast in subservient or threatening roles, among other stereotypes. This is especially true in the horror genre, Peele’s bread and butter, where Black actors have often been cast in “token” roles with very little character development.

Peele himself is very deliberate about normalizing Black-led stories as well, as he once said in a 2019 interview with Colorlines discussing his sophomore film Us.

“It’s important to me that we can tell Black stories without it being about race,” Peele said. “I realized I had never seen a horror movie of this kind, where there’s an African-American family at the center that just is. After you get over the initial realization that you’re watching a Black family in a horror film, you’re just watching a movie. You’re just watching people.”

In Peele’s third venture, Palmer will star alongside Daniel Kaluuya as two siblings who own a horse ranch in a remote Hollywood town. They, alongside other residents, bear witness to an otherworldly encounter.

Nope releases to theatres across the United States on July 22.

X-Men fans debate how big an impact Mutants will have on the MCU

Marvel covers quite the array of universes and throughout the decades the comics have been going, heroes have crossed over into one another’s realms, with Hulk and Wolverine hammering it out and Spider-Man making the odd appearance amongst the mutants as well; but can we ever expect to see this within the MCU?

Disney bought out 20th Century Fox for a staggering $71.3 billion in 2019, allowing many superheroes previously unavailable to Marvel in the cinematic space to finally come home, so to speak. Now, there is the possibility for the current MCU to collide with the X-Men, but just how tricky will it be to navigate, and is it worth the risk? Fans took to Reddit to debate that very question.

Avengers vs. X-Men

The X-Men have been one of Marvel’s most popular creations, and they got their own movies back in the early 2000s, quite a bit before Robert Downey Jr. brought Iron Man to life on the big screen. They had their original trilogy, multiple Wolverine movies — some phenomenal (Logan), some less so (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) — and a reboot of the franchise through X-Men: First Class. Since the release of Iron Man in 2008, the two universes have been running alongside one another at the cinemas but never interacted. That is until we heard the voice of a certain Patrick Stewart in the trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Fans wonder just how the rest of the mutants will be introduced to the MCU, will they start from scratch or will they simply pull in the existing characters and their actors as well.

Many posted that they want to see the X-Men and the Avengers’ universes separate still, as integrating them would be tricky and would be hard to satisfy all die-hard fans.

Many think that with Disney now owning the X-Men, we may see some more Marvel series with these characters in them, just as we have had MCU shows such as WandaVision and Loki.

Whatever happens, it is up to the powers that be at Marvel, and we’re sure they have some ideas up their sleeves for how exactly they are going to go about bringing the X-Men into the Marvel Studios fold. Marvel fans are puzzled why Sony is making ‘Madame Web’ over other Spider-Verse heroines

Sony’s Madame Web has Marvel fans perplexed. In the comics, she’s a supporting character to Spider-Man, generally depicted as a blind, elderly woman confined to a life support system. Her powers arise from being a mutant, which gives her precognition, telepathy, and clairvoyance, often assisting Spidey with problems he can’t solve alone.

Now fans are busily debating whether she can really carry a solo movie. On r/Marvel there’s a thread in which a consensus is building that Sony should have focused on another heroine. The OP said:

I still find it hard to believe that with all these characters, who have years of solo comics, interesting stories that can be used and a reasonable fanbase, Madame web is the one that sony is most focused on making a movie, I’m not an executive but i would say it was a really bad choice.

Many replies point to Sony having a history of making bad choices, which was perhaps underlined by the terrible Morbius flopping at the box office earlier this month. Morbius writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless are working on the Madame Web script, which doesn’t exactly inspire much confidence.

Others underline that there are many more promising characters to adapt, including the various Spider-Women, Black Cat, and Mayday (with an interesting pitch that’d see Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst as her parents).

With Dakota Johnson cast in the lead role, it’s also obvious that the movie’s take on the character will necessarily mean a complete reworking of the concept, at which point you might as well just be making a movie about an original character.

It remains to be seen whether Madame Web is a good idea or not, but let’s face it — after Morbius, Sony has a lot of work to do in making their bizarre cinematic universe of Spider-Man side characters (but no actual Spidey) work.

Madame Web is set to be released on July 7, 2023.

A ‘Leprechaun’ reboot might actually happen this time

Everyone knows that Spider-Man: No Way Home topped the charts when it released in theaters on December 17, 2021 and the central focus was Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. However, another character deserves his time in the limelight: Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus. Straight out of Spider-Man 2, starring Tobey Maguire as the titular superhero, Molina’s Doc Ock made a welcome return in No Way Home, initially introduced as Spidery’s enemy, but later joining forces with Maguire, Garfield and Holland’s Spider-Men.

Molina made his debut as Doc Ock in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and was the famous archenemy to Spider-Man. He was turned evil by his mechanical tentacles, which feared for their own survival and thus invaded Doctor Octavius’ mind. The villain once again claimed the spotlight, when the actor returned to reprise his role in No Way Home alongside Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, Rhys Ifan’s Lizard and Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman.
