Gene Roddenberry’s Son Isn’t Sold On Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek Idea

Quentin Tarantino and Star Trek hardly felt like obvious bedfellows, especially with an R-rating thrown into the mix. For a while, it looked as though the two-time Academy Award winner’s stab at sci-fi was actually going to happen after he continually talked it up publicly, but the chances of it coming together have grown increasingly slim.

The Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs director remains adamant that he’s retiring after his next feature, and while he could feasibly co-write that screenplay with The Revenant‘s Mark L. Smith and have somebody else step behind the camera, Paramount are moving forward with two new Star Trek projects, which would appear to shunt Tarantino’s effort into development hell.

While a lot of Tarantino and Trek enthusiasts will be left disappointed if the 1930s-set gangster film doesn’t see the light of day, one person who wouldn’t be all that bothered is creator Gene Roddenberry’s son Rod. In an interview with Forbes, he admitted that despite being a fan of the filmmaker’s work, he doesn’t believe he’d be the right person to continue his father’s legacy.

“I struggle with that because the way I’m pretty myopic with the way I see Star Trek. I mentioned that I grew up with fans coming up to me out saying how Star Trek inspired them and gave them hope for the future. It’s the optimism and the messaging in there that make Star Trek what it was. I truly believe that. If you create a Star Trek, that is just action; that is not Star Trek, in my opinion. That’s what makes it different than Star Wars, and I love Star Wars, but they can both coexist. And I love Tarantino’s work and the kind of films that he does. I am trying to have an open mind.

I would be curious to read a script on his take. I do not think you could say we’re going to do a Reservoir Dogs Star Trek. I’ll be honest, that doesn’t work for me, but he is a fan, and I think as a fan, he probably understands to some degree that Star Trek has to have some of this messaging. I would be curious, and I would try to have an open mind, but I’m not sure what it would be. I am glad that people are willing to explore that at least.”

That’s an understandable point of view; Star Trek has always been loaded with subtext about humanity, whereas Tarantino’s work is largely characterized by unflinching violence, pop culture references and plenty of creatively foul-mouthed verbiage, none of which particularly suits or reflects the franchise.

No Time To Die Has Been Approved For Release In China

The notoriously strict Chinese censorship board might be having thoughts over approving the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings after comments made by star Simu Liu recently resurfaced and saw him come in for heavy criticism in the country of his birth, but James Bond appears to be okay, as per Variety.

Until Top Gun: Maverick rolls around next summer, No Time to Die can officially be called the longest-delayed movie of the pandemic era, having originally been scheduled for release in November 2019. A full 23 months later, Daniel Craig’s final outing as cinema’s premiere secret agent will finally hit big screens all over the world.

Recent reports indicated that No Time to Die had faced so many setbacks and delays that it need to earn at least $900 million at the box office just to break even, so a Chinese run could definitely help in that regard. Then again, the franchise isn’t quite as popular on local shores as it is in the Western world, with Skyfall and Spectre earning $59 million and $84 million respectively.

Of course, any money coming in at all is a blessing in the time of COVID-19, especially when No Time to Die has become one of the very few foreign blockbusters to have been given the green light so far this year. No official bow has been set as of yet, so there’s a chance China might end up getting the 25th installment in the series a little later than the planned 30th September United Kingdom premiere, with audiences in the United States having to wait until October 8th.

Daniel Craig Reveals Hugh Jackman Helped Him Cope With Instant Fame

Daniel Craig was hardly dwelling in obscurity when he was first announced as the new James Bond in October 2005, having made his screen debut thirteen years previously, but he was very much an unknown quantity outside of the United Kingdom; although the same could also be said for the majority of his predecessors.

The actor was familiar with the ins and outs of Hollywood having co-starred with Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and lent support in Steven Spielberg’s acclaimed Munich, but his biggest leading role at that stage in his career came in Matthew Vaughn’s crime thriller Layer Cake, which went a long way to landing him 007 in the first place.

To become the leading man of an iconic franchise known the world over is a level of instant fame that nobody can prepare you for. Luckily, the industry’s most wholesome man Hugh Jackman stepped in to offer his support, as revealed by Craig in AppleTV+ documentary Being James Bond.

“My personal life was affected by being that famous all of a sudden. I used to lock myself in and close the curtains, I was in cloud cuckoo land. I was physically and mentally under siege, Hugh Jackman helped me to come to terms with it and appreciate it.”

Benedict Cumberbatch Praises Spider-Man: No Way Home Director

Once Spider-Man: No Way Home comes to theaters in December, 60% of Jon Watts’ entire filmography will be comprised of Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbusters. Prior to being tasked with crafting Tom Holland’s solo series, the 40 year-old’s only previous credits were low budget horror Clown and Kevin Bacon road movie Cop Car.

In fact, his MCU percentage is only set to increase, with Watts moving straight onto the MCU’s Fantastic Four reboot once he wraps up his duties on No Way Home. The filmmaker is clearly a favorite of Kevin Feige, and it sounds like he’s got another staunch supporter in Benedict Cumberbatch.

During a new interview with Variety, the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star was fielding the inevitable questions over his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home. While he wouldn’t be drawn on specifics regarding the plot, he was quick to lavish praise on Watts’ skills as both a person and professional.

“Jon is great, he’s got such a light touch, he’s so assured though. He’s great to hang out with on set. He’s very witty, but incredibly generous and supportive. Everything you want in a director. He’s young, he’s energetic, he gets the kids, I call myself an ‘older person’ to the older people. It’s an atmosphere on that set. It’s a bonded group, they’ve done three now, beautiful work environment. I really really enjoyed being on that set, I really did.”

Watts is only five years younger than Cumberbatch, so the former Sherlock Holmes must be feeling his age if he’s referring to the 40 year-old director as one of the youths. Spider-Man: No Way Home has piqued everybody’s curiosity with its multiversal narrative and Doctor Strange’s unusual behavior in the trailer, but at least we know everybody had a fun time putting the project together, even if we want answers.
