Ghost Rider Fans Torn Between Norman Reedus Or Keanu Reeves

Looking at how rapidly the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand, with dozens of feature film and Disney Plus projects in various stages of development as Phase Four marks the franchise’s most ambitious era yet, it’s only a matter of time before Ghost Rider is confirmed to be making his way into official canon.

Marvel Studios have held the rights since 2013, and besides a brief flirtation with Gabriel Luna’s Robbie Reyes, the company hasn’t shown much interest in a live-action reboot. If the biggest game in town is happy to reinvent vampire hunter Blade as the star of a PG-13 blockbuster, then there’s no reason why the Spirit of Vengeance can’t be afforded the same treatment.

Throughout the constant churn of rumor and speculation, two fan favorite contenders that never stray too far from the conversation are Keanu Reeves and Norman Reedus. Both have been linked to the role many times, and while Reeves has never addressed it publicly, Reedus is more than down to play Johnny Blaze if the opportunity arises.

As you can see below, Ghost Rider recently found himself trending, and fans appear to be torn on whether the action icon or The Walking Dead veteran would make for a better flame-skulled antihero.

Supernatural squad Midnight Sons have also been touted for an impending MCU debut, and when you throw that on top of the countless rumors dating back years about Ghost rider, there’s hardly a shortage of narrative, storytelling or mythological avenues to make it happen. As always, though, we’ll just have to put our trust in Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige to wait and see how it happens, and with who.

Netflix Offers Status Update On Bright 2

As a streaming service, Netflix arguably have the leeway to take more risks when it comes to mounting big budget original projects, because the lack of box office dollars to worry about can be offset by a monthly subscription fee rolling in from over 200 million subscribers. On paper, David Ayer’s Bright looked like a slam dunk, but it would be fair to say that the movie never lived up to the hype or potential.

Looking at how much the platform has expanded over the last four years, it’s easy to forget just how much of a big deal Bright was. It was Netflix’s most expensive in-house production ever at the time with a budget close to $100 million, an established director at the helm and an A-list megastar in the lead role, something that’s become commonplace in the period since.

A high concept odd couple buddy cop procedural set in a fantasy world was a unique premise, but Ayer’s gritty and self-serious tone was the wrong fit for the material. Bright may have drawn in huge viewership numbers, but it was far from a critically acclaimed success. Of course, a sequel was placed into development nonetheless, but it hasn’t gained much traction at all.

In a new interview, Netflix chief Scott Stuber was asked about how the company determines what movies get sequels and what ones don’t, with a script for Bright 2 reportedly close to being handed in, which was being written by T.S. Nowlin and genre Evan Spiliotopoulos the last we heard.

“It’s all gut. The data stuff is hugely overstated. At the end of the day, you have to ask: Do you believe in it? Do you have passion for it? Do you think it’s going to work?”

Louis Leterrier was announced to be directing last summer, but despite the rumors Bright 2 could be shooting as soon as the fall, it looks unlikely if there’s not even a completed screenplay yet.

New Twilight Project Rumored To Be In The Works At Netflix

After close to a decade in the cultural wilderness, Twilight appears to be on the verge of a comeback, which is either exciting or absolutely terrifying depending on how you feel about the franchise. The fanbase went into raptures at the announcement Stephenie Meyer was gearing up to unveil new novel Midnight Sun last year, and the author is even threatening to write another two stories set in the same world.

On top of that, The Twilight Saga has been dominating Netflix’s most-watched list, accounting for 50% of the Top 10 as recently as a few days ago, with old and new viewers alike checking out or revisiting Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and two-part finale Breaking Dawn, and the five-film series was gathering plenty of buzz on social media for good measure.

Twilight

A new rumor claims that the streaming service are developing a new Twilight project, but no details are provided other than it’ll be either a movie or a TV show, so it would be an understatement to call it vague at best. Realistically, should it happen then a reboot or Midnight Sun adaptation would be the most likely avenue, seeing as a large number of the original cast members have sought to distance themselves from the sparkly vampire story since it ended, not least of all Robert Pattinson.

Summit Entertainment might not be too willing to hand over the rights, either, with The Twilight Saga the production company’s five highest-grossing movies ever. Then again, the outfit has been a subsidiary of Lionsgate since 2012 so the decision might not be in their hands, and it’s not as if Netflix doesn’t have an endless supply of cash to draw from.

Army Of The Dead 2 Will Reportedly Feature More Zombie Animals

Without question, one of the best moments in Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead comes during the third act, when Alpha zombie Zeus puts on his makeshift helmet and a cape, grabs a spear and rides an undead horse into battle. It doesn’t need to be explained, it just happens because it fits the movie’s completely unhinged style and tone, and audiences bought right into it.

Similarly, Valentine the undead tiger became an instant cult favorite from the second the first trailer dropped, and when the big cat absolutely lays waste to Garrett Dillahunt’s Martin in ludicrously extended and violent fashion, you can’t help but admire the way Zack Snyder opted to throw everything into the action blockbuster for no other reason than he thought it would be cool. And for the most part, it was.

Fans of animal zombies may have reason to rejoice, then, after we heard from our sources – the same ones who told us Netflix were giving the green light to an Enola Holmes sequel long before it was confirmed – that Army of the Dead 2 could end up featuring even more animalistic predators to chow down on the unfortunate humans in their path.

While there’s no indication as to what species in particular we could be seeing, this is Zack Snyder we’re talking about, so it’ll probably end up being an elephant, a shark or something else that’s either giant or got a lot of teeth, perhaps even both.

Maybe as the Army of the Dead universe continues to expand we’ll even get an in-canon documentary series focused specifically on zombie animals with David Attenborough narrating, which would be one of the greatest things to ever happen to cinema.

A Popular Ryan Reynolds Movie Is No Longer Getting A Sequel

Netflix has been doubling down on trying to build a number of film and television franchises from the ground up, but it’s impossible to predict from the outset which ones are capable of drawing in a big enough crowd and presenting the potential to continue on as a viable brand. On paper, though, 6 Underground looked to be a slam dunk.

The platform recruited Michael Bay, one of the industry’s biggest directors who built his entire career on explosive pyrotechnics, and handed him $150 million to craft a balls to the wall action blockbuster with Ryan Reynolds in the lead role. While 6 Underground was hardly either man’s best effort, it still ranks as the streamer’s fourth most-watched original movie ever.

With Reynolds sticking around to shoot Red Notice and The Adam Project back-to-back for Netflix, coupled with those viewership numbers, it felt like a second installment was a foregone conclusion. In fact, we’d even been hearing tales of trilogies, plot details and potential casting additions, but the company’s head of original film Scott Stuber has not only confirmed that 6 Underground 2 isn’t happening, but he even explained why.

“We didn’t feel like we got there on that one creatively. It was a nice hit, but at the end of the day we didn’t feel like we nailed the mark to justify coming back again. There just wasn’t that deep love for those characters or that world.”

6 Underground

Michael Bay’s output generally tends to divide critics but make big money at the box office, and with no quantifiable way to measure how interested people were in seeing more other than counting two minutes as one view, Netflix clearly couldn’t justify throwing another $150 million in the filmmaker’s direction to helm a follow up to a film that was entertaining in parts, but also deeply nonsensical and often painfully dull when things weren’t getting blown up. On the plus side, there are still plenty of action franchises on the way to keep customers satiated, even without 6 Underground 2.

Percy Jackson Star Reveals Pressure Over Harry Potter Comparisons

One Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone had exploded onto the scene at the end of 2001 to turn the literary phenomenon into a global one, earning close to a billion dollars during its initial theatrical run, Hollywood went on a rampage to snap up the rights to as many YA novels as possible in an effort to capitalize on the newfound audience desire for big budget fantasy brought from page to screen.

As tends to be the case anytime the industry jumps on a bandwagon, there were more than a few failures along the way. In fact, outside of Harry Potter only The Twilight Saga and The Hunger Games managed to reach a natural conclusions, while others failed to get past the first film, and the likes of Divergent and Percy Jackson were abandoned after a sequel or two.

In a new interview, star Alexandra Daddario admitted she was oblivious to the pressure that came attached to Percy Jackson, which was both a beloved book series in its own right and the latest attempt to try and replicate the formula for success that had worked so well for The Boy Who Lived.

“I loved Harry Potter and I knew that it was structurally similar, but to me, at that time, when I was cast in it I was 22. To me it was just like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m gonna go do a movie!’. Now I’m older and I’ve been in enough films and gone through a bunch of press cycles and all of that stuff, so I have more of a sense of how important this is or that is, or if a movie’s gonna work or not work. But at the time, it was just like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m in a movie’.

So I didn’t think about the pressure of anything. I didn’t really understand what was gonna happen from that movie or the concept of tracking or budgets or first weekend box office. That was all stuff I learned through it, so any pressure I felt was just a pressure to do a good job. I just wanted to do a good job and to have fun, and that was the pressure that I was putting on myself. I wasn’t thinking about, ‘Is this too similar to Harry Potter?’, or, ‘Is this gonna work?’, or anything like that.”

Percy Jackson

The Percy Jackson duology weren’t bombs by any means, but they hardly set the world on fire after combining to earn $428 million at the box office on combined production costs of $185 million, rendering the profit margins small enough to dump the idea of continuing the franchise.

The good news for fans is that a much more faithful translation of Percy Jackson is in the works for Disney Plus, one that looks to do the source material justice after author Rick Riordan essentially disowned the movies.

Hereditary Star Says The Movie Caused Him Severe Emotional Damage

As far as directorial debuts go, Ari Aster’s Hereditary was one hell of a way to put himself on the map. The uncompromising supernatural and psychological horror was the subject of widespread acclaim from both audiences and critics, earning back its $10 million production budget eight times over at the box office and instantly establishing Aster as one of the genre’s outstanding new talents.

The ensemble cast was also superb across the board, and it wouldn’t be hyperbolic to say that Toni Collette’s turn as Annie Graham is one of the single greatest lead performances that’s ever been seen in a horror film. The actress may have taken most of the plaudits, but it was Alex Wolff who anchored the entire narrative as Peter, who found himself caught in the middle of everything that went down.

The youngster’s work was even more impressive when you consider he’d only recently turned 19 when cameras started rolling on Hereditary in February 2017, and in a new interview Wolff admitted that the intense nature of both the story and the shoot had a severe emotional impact.

“I’ll tell you that movie did about as much damage to me as a movie can do. It really affected me. It’s very hard because as an actor, you really don’t want to sound pretentious or self-serious or like anything is too serious. Because we have a cushy job in a lot of ways, but this, emotionally, it was one of those tough ones, it was one of those ones that really did some gymnastics on my emotional well-being.”

Wolff was no stranger to intense roles before he even got to Hereditary having played Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in Peter Berg’s Patriots Day, and it must have been incredibly jarring for the star on a professional level to move straight from light and breezy blockbuster Jumanji: Welcome to the Junge into Aster’s modern horror classic, which put him through the wringer in more ways than one.

He came out fine on the other side, though, as Wolff continues to cement his reputation as a fast-rising talent, while he can currently be seen in both M. Night Shyamalan’s box office topping thriller Old and Nicolas Cage’s moving drama Pig.

Margot Robbie Wants Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy Relationship In The DCEU

Margot Robbie may have said she’s planning to take a break from Harley Quinn after the release of The Suicide Squad, but she could realistically continue playing the character for at least another decade, if not more. After all, a huge number of cinema’s marquee superheroes are played by stars in their late 30s and 40s, and the actress only turned 31 at the beginning of the month.

She’s also one of the standout talents of her generation, having already secured two Academy Award nominations and moved into producing, with her LuckyChap Entertainment banner one of the companies involved in Best Picture nominee Promising Young Woman and her solo outing Birds of Prey. By that logic, Warner Bros. and DC Films would be foolish not to go out of their way to ensure that the former Harleen Quinzell remains an integral part of the DCEU for years to come.

Robbie recently admitted that she’s constantly badgering the studio to bring Poison Ivy into the mix, something that came close to happening before David Ayer’s Gotham City Sirens vanished into the ether of development hell, but in a new interview she’s once again doubled down on her desire to see Pamela Isley brought into the fold.

“I like that other people are as enthusiastic about this prospect as I am. I mean, I really am quite invested in Harley’s romantic life. So a box that I did like to check in this one is seeing her try and date new guys because it’s something that I’ve always enjoyed seeing when it’s popped up in the comics and something I would like to explore like you said, Poison Ivy, that is a relationship I’d love to see play out on screen.”

Of course, not everyone needs a love interest in order to thrive, but having moved on from the Joker in Birds of Prey, there’s definitely a gap in Harley Quinn‘s heart that could be filled by Poison Ivy. Fans have been backing Megan Fox for the part, and with Robbie integral to how the cult comic book favorite is portrayed onscreen, she’ll have a huge say in what comes next for the mischievous antiheroine.

Bruce Campbell Says He Won’t Be Appearing In Evil Dead Rise

While the idea of a new Evil Dead movie without Sam Raimi or Bruce Campbell on either side of the camera might be sacrilegious to some, it didn’t stop Fede Alvarez’s remake from hauling in almost $100 million at the box office on a $17 million budget, and it also drew some of the strongest reviews seen by any high profile horror remake.

The original duo were both credited as producers, though, and that’s continued through to HBO Max’s Evil Dead Rise, in which Raimi and Campbell have been heavily involved. Even the erstwhile Ash couldn’t settle on how to define Lee Cronin’s movie, but based on his comments it looks to exist somewhere between sequel, reboot and re-imagining, with the Necromonicon central to the story.

Production has been underway in New Zealand since the beginning of last month, and Cronin revealed a couple of weeks back that he’s about halfway through filming, so Evil Dead Rise has come together incredibly quickly when you consider how long it spent trapped in development hell before finally managing to escape.

A lot of fans have been hoping that Ash will show up for a legacy cameo, as tends to be the case whenever a popular property gets a fresh coat of paint decades down the line, but in a new interview Campbell looked to pour water on the speculation.

“I won’t be appearing in it, no. I’ll be in the upcoming Evil Dead game, which I think is due for February 2022. I just finished the voice for that. The nice thing is, your voice doesn’t age as much as your body, so I can milk that for a few more years.”

Evil Dead Rise follows two estranged sisters named Beth and Ellie who meet up in Los Angeles, only for their emotional reunion to be cut short after a mysterious and very clearly malevolent book is found in Ellie’s building, unleashing all sorts of monsters and demons, forcing them into a fight for survival, so Ash isn’t really required to suit the narrative.
