Fast & Furious 9 Coming To VOD This Friday

The industry is still trying to shake off the lingering effects of the Coronavirus pandemic, which has caused both a steep drop in box office takings and a drastically shortened window between theatrical and VOD releases. Fast & Furious 9 only premiered domestically on June 25th, but it’s available to rent from this coming Friday.

While the ninth installment in the beloved franchise obviously hasn’t been able to hit the same commercial heights as its predecessors, a global haul of $622 million and counting is a phenomenal return for the COVID-19 era. To put that into perspective, the second highest-grossing Hollywood blockbuster released since the beginning of 2020 is Godzilla vs. Kong, and it’s miles behind Dominic Toretto and the gang with $465 million in the coffers.

The return of director Justin Lin after a two-film sabbatical that saw James Wan and F. Gary Gray step behind the camera was the smartest move The Fast Saga could have made as it builds towards the concluding tenth and eleventh chapters. Nobody knows how to stage the signature brand of vehicular mayhem better than Lin, and his lightness of touch saw the mythology edge one step closer towards becoming completely self-aware.

Studio Universal reached an agreement with the major theater chains last year that would see any movie to make $50 million and above across its opening weekend play exclusively in multiplexes around the country for five weeks before heading to VOD, an obligation Fast & Furious 9 fulfilled and then some. With the Delta variant spreading, there’s still going to be a lot of folks reluctant to crowd themselves into a packed cinema, so forking over $20 to see the latest globetrotting adventure for the ensemble cast is a more than acceptable substitute.

John Cena Says A Big Screen Showdown With The Rock Feels Inevitable

Dwayne Johnson and John Cena have shared a lot of similarities in their careers, and they’ve orbited around each other on a number of occasions in the past, but in Hollywood their paths are yet to cross. The two generational WWE stars faced off inside the squared circle at two consecutive WrestleMania events, but that big screen reunion is yet to happen despite the fact they’re both part of the same two franchises.

Cena has been vocal in his desire to bump into Johnson’s Luke Hobbs in the Fast & Furious universe, having recently joined the family as long-lost third Toretto sibling Jakob. Unfortunately, The Rock looks to have drawn a line under his tenure as part of the mainline Fast Saga, which sounds as though it’s down to his ongoing difference of opinion with leading man and producer Vin Diesel.

The opportunity to parachute Jakob into any future Hobbs & Shaw sequels remains a distinct possibility, but it’s hard to imagine their DCEU characters ever meeting. Peacemaker might play a major role in The Suicide Squad, and has an HBO Max series coming in January of next year, but Black Adam is an all-powerful cosmic deity who might not be spending a great deal of time on Earth.

That being said, Cena has admitted in a new interview that he feels it’s an inevitability that two of professional wrestling’s biggest-ever mainstream stars will butt heads somewhere down the line.

“You know me. Ready, willing, and able. And answering the phone whenever it rings. I’m good. I think that the excitement is starting to build with fans, whether you talk about the conversation of Fast, or you talk about now the DC Universe. I don’t want to say we’re on a crash course and it’s inevitable. I want to, because I’m a fan. But we’ll see. We’ll see what happens. Tell me what he says.”

Whether it happens one, five or ten years from now, it does feel like something unavoidable as John Cena continues to ascend up the industry ladder, but one thing that isn’t up for debate is the fact Dave Bautista most certainly won’t be joining his former WWE rivals.

Loki Director Reveals If Steve Rogers Created A Nexus Event In Avengers: Endgame

Now that Disney Plus series Loki has established the rules and regulations of time travel within the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a lot of fans have been revisiting Avengers: Endgame to try and pick some holes in the time heist, given that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes changing events in the aftermath of the Battle of New York is what allowed the 2012 version of Tom Hiddleston to escape in the first place, setting the stage for everything that happened in his solo series.

One of the biggest talking points has been the adventures of Steve Rogers at the end of the movie, when he went journeying through time and space to return the Infinity Stones to their rightful places, which resulted in him showing up as an old man having lived a life of peace and happiness with Peggy Carter.

There’s been plenty of debate in the two years since then as to where Steve went, how he accomplished his mission and what he was up to for the remaining 80 years. That only increased when Loki introduced the idea of a Nexus event, and Captain America popping up all over the place to return the Stones may have gotten the TVA’s attention.

In a new interview, Loki director Kate Herron admitted she’d been thinking about it just as much as the rest of us, and offered her take on whether or not Steve and Peggy would have been pruned for messing with the Sacred Timeline.

“I’ve been thinking about this. People are going to be annoyed because it’s not a definitive answer, but also I can only really answer as a fan, right? My theory is this: It comes down to if you’re an optimist or a pessimist. If you’re an optimist, maybe it was okay for them living that way, and the branch wasn’t so severe that it didn’t need to be pruned, and that meant that they could stay together. Maybe the romantics can say somehow that managed to exist. And then the pessimists think, ‘They probably got pruned’.

It depends on how people fall on that side of things, because in my head I guess it would be… generally branches have to be pruned and then maintained, right? But it depends. Like if it’s alternate, it would imply that it’s running alongside our main timeline, so yeah. I don’t want to definitively say that they were pruned, but by our logic in the TVA, probably. But maybe where there’s a will there’s a way, and they weren’t too disruptive and managed to live happily ever after.”

Some folks were of the belief they’d spotted Agent Carter in the background of a Loki episode, which would then tie into the theory she’d been pruned for having Steve back in her life, especially when it was also confirmed the older Cap was present at her funeral as a coffin bearer, as was his younger self. It’s all very confusing, but that’s time travel.

Blade Star Takes Back Controversial Black Widow Comments, Says He Feels Bad

In the run-up to Black Widow, Marvel fans were excited to see the MCU return to the big screen, but one former Marvel star wasn’t. Stephen Dorff, who appeared in 1998’s Blade, blasted the film, saying it “looked like garbage… like a bad video game” and that he felt “embarrassed” for star Scarlet Johansson. Dorff’s comments went viral, with the internet roasting him for his anti-superhero movie opinions when he’s been a part of the genre himself.

It seems the actor regrets his comments now, though, as he’s seriously walked back on his thoughts in a new interview with TMZ. Dorff revealed that he’s old friends with Johansson and “felt bad” about what he said before.

“Oh, I love Scarlett. I think that was taken a little bit out of context,” Dorff said. “She’s a great actress. I just… I’m not a fan. I love Scarlett, though, I heard she’s going to be a mom so I wish her the best and she’s an old friend of mine so I felt bad about that comment.”

Dorff went on to change his tune a little from last time, praising Iron Man and some of DC’s efforts, and explaining that he was just in a bad mood during the previous chat and spoke more harshly than he should’ve done. He also said that he has reached out to ScarJo to apologize but has yet to receive a response.

“I haven’t seen [Black Widow], I don’t really go to those movies,” he continued. “I liked Iron Man, I like when they go a little darker. I love the Joker. I’m looking forward to the new Batman. But, you know, that guy in England got me at a moment where I was just sh*t talking a little bit and I felt a little bad about it. Happens sometimes. I haven’t heard from Scarlett, but I sent her a little note, though.”

This whole situation has a feeling of deja vu about it as we’ve seen this sort of thing play out before – an actor criticizes superhero movies, the internet gets offended, so the actor takes back the criticism. Ethan Hawke, for instance, blasted the genre in 2018 when discussing his dislike of Logan. He got some flak for his views, so Hawke clarified them in a follow-up interview. Skip ahead to now and Hawke is about to join the MCU himself in Moon Knight.

So, despite his comments, another Marvel role for Dorff isn’t out of the question. In fact, he has previously said that he’d be open to reprising Deacon Frost in the upcoming Blade reboot, which will star Mahershala Ali in the role of the vampire hunter made famous by Wesley Snipes. We don’t know when that’s getting here, but Black Widow can be seen in theaters and on Disney Plus now.
