DCEU Fans Want To See Megan Fox As Poison Ivy

Megan Fox is in the midst of both an onscreen comeback and the rehabilitation of her public image, with the actress revealing in a string of recent interviews how badly she’d been affected on both a personal and professional level by the constant media coverage surrounding every aspect of her life.

The star’s career is definitely heading in the right direction, even if her latest effort Midnight in the Switchgrass completely sucks. Having proved her action chops in the entertainingly stupid action thriller Rogue, Fox gave what might be the best performance of her career in high concept thriller ‘Till Death, and signaled her interest in returning to big budget fare by admitting she’d love a role in either the Marvel Cinematic Universe or DCEU.

Naturally, fans have taken this and run with it, and many of them are now calling for Fox to become the DCEU’s Poison Ivy, as you can see from the reactions below.

Margot Robbie said she’d been constantly pestering Warner Bros. about bringing Pamela Isley into the fold, something that came close to happening a few years back before Gotham City Sirens was abandoned in the wake of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, with Birds of Prey ultimately rising from the ashes.

Fox has dark comedy Big Gold Brick, contained sci-fi Aurora and the star studded animation Naya Legend of the Golden Dolphins in post-production, the latter of which features the vocal talents of Kate Winslet, Gerard Butler and Elliot Page, so it could be just a matter of time before she comes full circle and returns to the studio blockbuster realm that launched her into the public eye to begin with, and Poison Ivy may well be the role to do it.

Jason Blum Says Paranormal Activity 7 Is Already Finished

Given the low production costs involved, it typically doesn’t take too long to cobble together a Paranormal Activity movie, at least when compared to your typical horror sequels. The low cost and high reward approach has seen the franchise become one of the most profitable properties in the history of cinema, having brought in $890 million at the box office on combined production budgets of $28 million.

However, the seventh installment won’t be aiming to bring the series to the mythical billion-dollar threshold that Saw recently passed, with Underwater director William Eubank’s new chapter heading straight to Paramount+. We’ve known for a while that Paranormal Activity 7 was set to land on streaming before the end of the year, but based on comments by producer Jason Blum, we should probably expect it around Halloween time after he revealed the film is ready to go.

Every Paranormal Activity with the exception of The Marked Ones released between October 14th and October 23rd, so by that logic we’ve got a pretty good idea of when the seventh could arrive. Blum also admitted that he wasn’t too sold on the idea of continuing the saga, which is why the decision was made to reboot the franchise as it migrates to Paramount+.

“The movie’s done. Yeah, we did it. Paramount wanted to continue Paranormal Activity, I probably would have left it alone. So they wanted to continue it, but I thought if they were gonna continue it, you gotta… It was tired, there was no way to continue the road that we’d been down. So I really encouraged all the creative people involved to think of something new. A lot of people who are going to go see the new Paranormal Activity were 3 years old when the first Paranormal Activity came out, so they don’t even know from those older movies. I thought if you were going to re-do it, you better really re-do it, not try and expand what we did all those years ago.”

Plot details are non-existent, but the script hails from veteran Christopher Landon, writer of every new chapter since the original. Emily Bader, Roland Buck III, Dan Lippert, and Henry Ayres-Brown have been confirmed for the cast, but you’d imagine Paranormal Activity 7 will be keeping its cards close to the chest to try and generate hype for a concept that suffered greatly from the law of diminishing returns thanks to the annual onslaught of found footage frights.

Black Adam Director Says He’s The Dirty Harry Of Superheroes

In case you might have missed it, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam is not going to be a clean cut good guy when his long-awaited solo blockbuster hits theaters next year. Both the leading man and various crew members have made that point abundantly clear, reiterating over and over again that the cosmic comic book favorite doesn’t practice restraint and won’t have a no-kill rule.

Johnson very rarely plays characters that have any sort of harder edges, so it’s exciting to think that he’ll be painting his superhero debut in several shades of gray. Those that know Black Adam’s backstory will be full aware he’s got every reason to be pissed off, and the star’s blend of charisma, screen presence and sheer size will make him a formidable foe for anyone unfortunate enough to get in his way.

In a new interview, director Jaume Collet-Serra offered another comparison by outlining the similarities between Black Adam and Clint Eastwood’s iconic Harry Callahan, as well as his quartet of collaborations with Liam Neeson in Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night and The Commuter, so the filmmaker knows a thing or two about grizzled badassery himself.

“Having just done a romantic adventure comedy where he’s very light, I was really attracted to getting the dark version of Dwayne. Basically, turning him into Clint Eastwood in a Western. I was like, ‘You’re like the Dirty Harry of superheroes’. I didn’t have to convince people that I was right for this one in the same way that I did for Jungle Cruise. It’s like things I’ve done with Liam, that tough-guy antihero who has a heart. The world is not black and white. The world is in gray areas, so you need these people that are riding that gray area.”

One strand of DNA that Black Adam would love to share with Dirty Harry is longevity, seeing as Don Siegel’s classic 1971 original went on to spawn four sequels over the next seventeen years. Obviously, Johnson will be 66 years old in 2038 so that might be asking just a little too much, but plans for a multi-film series are already firmly in place. That being said, a huge, jacked, superpowered version of Dirty Harry traveling through the cosmos and dispatching anyone who dares to cross him sounds all kinds of awesome.

Man Of Steel 2 Rumored To Be Back On The Table With Henry Cavill

Eight years is an eternity in blockbuster cinema, which is why the chances of a Man of Steel sequel happening continue to grow nothing but dimmer, despite the fact the fans would love to see it happen, as would leading man Henry Cavill, who still has at least one film left on his contract with Warner Bros. to play Superman.

To give an example of how much the sands can shift, eight years after Terminator Salvation was released, Dark Fate was shooting, and in between those two points we got another reboot in Genisys. Looking at the X-Men, eight years on from First Class we’d seen a pair of Deadpools and Dark Phoenix, with the rights to the characters in the hands of Marvel Studios before The New Mutants even had the chance to hit theaters.

Tipster Mikey Sutton is now offering that Man of Steel 2 is in development, but we should point out that the quotes in question are admittedly taken fairly, if not wildly, out of context. While Sutton claims that The Hollywood Reporter “reveals” the project is in the works, and Goyer agrees by saying “I think so,” it’s not quite that simple.

The interviewer’s exact words are “I’ve heard rumors a sequel may be in the works with Cavill on board (Warner Bros. says none is in development)”, so it’s far from a done deal. Not only that, but the question Goyer replies to asks him if he feels like there’s unfinished business with the story told in Man of Steel, not if there’s an actual follow up on the cards.

We can still keep our fingers crossed, though, but after ten and a half years under contract for Cavill and still no solo sequel, Man of Steel 2 remains as far away as it’s ever been.

The Internet’s Going Crazy For Kate Beckinsale’s New Action Movie

Thanks to her five-film stint as the Underworld franchise’s Selene, Kate Beckinsale‘s action hero credentials are hardly up for debate, with the actress proving herself to be more than capable of kicking all sorts of vampiric and Lycan ass, even if the quality of the series was inconsistent, to put it lightly.

Even outside of her recurring bouts of running, gunning, shooting, stabbing and punching, Beckinsale has shown up in a number of big budget blockbusters across the last two decades, and while none of them can be considered classics by any stretch of the imagination, she acquitted herself well in the likes of Van Helsing and the Total Recall remake, and it looks as though we can now add Tanya Wexler’s Jolt to that list.

The success of John Wick has a lot to answer for, leading to a barrage of revenge-fueled actioners that feature recognizable stars going on the rampage. Just ten days ago we saw the release of Karen Gillan’s Gunpowder Milkshake, and now Beckinsale is getting her hands just as dirty. The critics haven’t been too kind, with Jolt sitting on a middling Rotten Tomatoes score of 35%, but as you can see from the reactions below, it’s going down much better with audiences.

Jolt

Beckinsale plays Lindy, a woman who suffers from an intermittent explosive disorder that leaves her prone to incredibly violent outbursts, which she keeps under control by wearing a vest that shocks her when she’s close to losing control. When someone close to her is murdered, she sets out to find the killer while being pursued by the authorities as the prime suspect.

That logline is utter nonsense, which is probably why Jolt is faring so well, because it sounds like exactly the sort of gloriously trashy and entertaining B-movie that’s designed for a Friday night.

James Gunn Says Superhero Movies Need To Change To Avoid Dying Out

With 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn marked himself out as one of the most original superhero filmmakers in the industry, helping to change the shape of the MCU as the franchise thereafter veered towards more off-beat, heavily comedic projects. Now that he’s working over at DC, Gunn’s doing much the same for the DCEU. His wacky war movie The Suicide Squad is about to hit theaters in a couple of weeks.

It’s no surprise, then, that Gunn has a warning to impart to his fellow directors working in this genre – and it’s to make sure to change things up and keep the material fresh or else the superhero craze will fizzle out. Speaking to The Irish times, Gunn came clean about his thoughts about contemporary comic book films, labelling most of them as “boring”, and pointing to the need to recapture the kind of freshness of 1978’s Superman or 2008’s Iron Man.

“We know about the way cowboy films went, and the way war films went. I don’t know, I think you don’t have to be a genius to put two and two together and see that there’s a cycle to those sorts of films, you know and that the only hope for the future of the comic book and superhero films is to change them up. They’re really dumb. And they’re mostly boring for me right now. I loved them at the beginning. I was really excited when they first started making those movies. It was about the visual effects when I saw Superman as a kid. I still love that movie. Okay, I know, that’s a guy on wires and bluescreen with this sort of crappy visual effects. And then when Iron Man came out, I was in. You’re able to make a guy fly around who looks like a guy flying around. And that was a beautiful thing to be able to do. But if the movies don’t change, it’s gonna get really, really boring.”

In many ways, Gunn is echoing the controversial comments that Steven Spielberg made a few years ago, when the legendary director said that superhero movies would “go the way of the western” and eventually dry up. With the comic book content boom we’re currently in, it’s hard to imagine that happening anytime soon, but Gunn’s right that the genre needs to keep evolving to put that point off for as long as possible.

Thankfully, it looks like most creatives have already got that message. In particular, superhero TV shows are a hotbed of originality right now, with 2021 delivering a range of subversive, acclaimed series. e.g. WandaVision, Invincible and Loki. As long as the movies learn the right lessons from these successes, the genre should remain in a healthy state for years to come.

James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad opens in cinemas and on HBO Max from August 5th in the US, or July 30th in the UK.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Fans Think Storm May Have Been Cast

Production is now underway on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and there are less than twelve months to go until the hotly-anticipated sequel hit theaters on July 8, 2022. Up until very recently, Narcos: Mexico star Tenoch Huerta stood alone as the only new addition confirmed for the ensemble, with many fans speculating that he’ll play Namor the Sub-Mariner, and the latest recruit is also generating plenty of chatter.

Michaela Coel has boarded the project, and while she’s not a household name just yet, the multi-hyphenate talent has rocketed to mainstream attention over the last year as the creator, writer, co-director, executive producer and lead of I May Destroy You, one of the most acclaimed TV shows of 2020 that won five BAFTAs and is currently up for nine Emmys.

It’s a huge get for Wakanda Forever to snag a star that’s rising up the Hollywood ranks so rapidly, and as you can see from the reactions below, fans think Coel may have been cast as Storm.

The X-Men are on their way to the MCU, that isn’t up for debate, but Storm slotting into the second Black Panther makes a lot of sense. Ororo Munroe has been linked with a part in the latest chapter since long before leading man Chadwick Boseman passed away, and in the comic books the powerful mutant has plenty of strong ties to Wakanda, so it makes a great deal of sense to continue slowly assimilating the former Fox characters into the Marvel Studios mythos.

Of course, it’s not a guarantee by any stretch of the imagination, but it wouldn’t be hard to join those particular dots, either. As shooting on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever continues, we should be getting more and more confirmations as to who’s playing who, Storm or otherwise.
