Space Jam: A New Legacy Fans Still Furious About Pepe Le Pew Being Cut

It’s unclear who was responsible for coming up with the background cameos that populate Space Jam: A New Legacy‘s climactic basketball game with the fate of both the real world and the ServerVerse at stake, but there’s absolutely no rhyme or reason to the majority of them, and many aren’t exactly what you’d call suitable for what’s ostensibly a children’s film.

Unless of course the youth of today are huge fans of Ken Russell’s The Devils, a 1971 historical drama about a convent of sexually repressed nuns. Or the classic 1962 psychological thriller What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?, where a fading former child star physically and mentally torments her paraplegic sister, or even the raping and murdering Droogs from Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange.

It’s tonal what-the-f*ckery at its finest, and has now even managed to reignite a debate we’d all thought had long since gone dormant. A New Legacy came under fire a few months ago when it was revealed that amorous skunk Pepé Le Pew had been dropped from the movie, and now that audiences have had the chance to see the bizarre laundry list of background players the can of worms has been re-opened, as you can see below.

Space Jam: A New Legacy is a very strange experiment, one that acts as more of an advertisement for the Warner Bros. back catalogue than the sequel to a beloved family favorite. It’s almost as if the storyline was molded around the IP and not the other way round, which is definitely not the smartest way to craft a $160 million blockbuster that still packs plenty of sequel potential, and it’s hard to imagine fans 25 years from now holding it in any sort of high regard.

Who Is the Strongest Avenger?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has introduced plenty of characters from the comics over the years, but when it comes to strength it’s hard to look past the Avengers.

A group consisting of Earth’s most powerful protectors, the group has now expanded significantly from the original six that we were introduced to in 2012.

In Avengers: Endgame we got our best look at all the characters who would be classified as Avengers and saw their fighting abilities on full display. Our list will consist of characters in the most powerful form they have appeared as in the MCU. This can be from either the films or the Disney+ television series.

Here are our picks for the strongest Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Strongest Avengers in the MCU

5. Captain America

Captain America

Captain America (Chris Evans) has been a member of the Avengers since their first appearance together on screen, but his character has matured greatly both in personality and strength. We got a look at the most powerful form of the character during the final battle in Avengers: Endgame.

Cap may not have found his way on this list without becoming worthy to wield Mjolnir and in turn the power of Thor. Wielding this weapon alongside his vibranium shield, Captain America can duel with Thanos in hand-to-hand combat as well as striking him down with lightning. While he still loses this duel, the character’s physical strength at this point undeniable having both the enhanced durability and power of the Super Soldier Serum and the power of Thor.

Welding Mjolnir, Captain America is a force to be reckoned with and is likely capable of defeating many of the other Avengers in combat.

4. Thor

Thor-Avengers-Infinity-War

In Endgame, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) doesn’t look to be in his most powerful form so for argument’s sake we will be referring to Thor at the conclusion of Infinity War as he enters through the Bifrost to take on Thanos.

To this point, no character had been able to damage Thanos severely and Thor was able to do just that forcing him to utter the notorious phrase, “You should’ve gone for the head”. Wielding both Mjolnir and Stormbreaker, Thor was able to cut through the offensive of all six infinity stones. Granted, this was after Thanos had used quite a lot of energy taking on the other Avengers, but Thor came closest to finishing the fight once and for all during this bout.

With a combination of his Asgardian godhood and extremely powerful energy, Thor is most definitely in the top five Avengers right now in the MCU.

3. Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange

Dr Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is one of the most mysterious and powerful characters in the MCU right now. The Sorcerer Supreme has shown a plethora of both offensive and defensive magic that makes him incredibly difficult for other characters to deal with.

Even wielding four infinity stones, the Mad Titan had plenty of trouble dealing with the magical barrage sent by Dr Strange, who didn’t even have his Time Stone to use. With the Time Stone on hand, Dr Strange may have been able to best Thanos there and set the MCU on a different path completely, but even without the infinity stone, the Sorcerer Supreme is still a more than capable fighter.

During the final act of Endgame, we see Dr Strange is mostly left holding back the ocean from flooding the battlefield, however, if he were to battle alongside the rest of Earth’s defenders he’d definitely have caused problems for Thanos.

2. Captain Marvel

Brie-Larson-as-Carol-Danvers-in-Captain-Marvel

Introduced in 2018’s Captain Marvel film, the character (played by Brie Larson) has been widely regarded as the most powerful Avenger currently in the MCU, and for good reason. Captain Marvel’s energy powers come from the Tesseract itself and grant her both incredible speed and the ability to fire blasts of energy at her foes.

Alongside this acquired strength, Carol Danvers also has Kree blood running through her veins gifting her extremely durability and strength that is on full display during her altercation with Thanos at the conclusion of Endgame. Where a headbutt had sent many Avengers flying back, Captain Marvel was able to withstand this attack and continue duelling with the Mad Titan fairly evenly.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige went as far as to call Captain Marvel “as powerful a character as we’ve ever put in a movie,” and at the time of her introduction this was unequivocally true, however, a character has shown themselves to be on a level of their own and because of that Captain Marvel gets the number two spot on our list.

1. Scarlet Witch

Infinity-War-Scarlet-Witch

Wanda Maximoff is without a doubt the most powerful Avenger in the MCU right now. From Infinity War onwards she has continued to display unmeasurable power. Her first impressive feat came when she destroyed the Mind Stone from the head of Vision while holding back Thanos with her energy. Destroying an infinity stone is a task most characters wouldn’t even dream of and yet she was able to do so while holding off the universe’s greatest threat.

The next time we see Scarlet Witch unleash her power is in the battle against Thanos at the end of Endgame. In this fight, she is able to duel with him to the point of forcing him to send down an airstrike allowing him to get out of danger.

These acts have been impressive, however, the best argument for Scarlet Witch being the most powerful Avenger comes from the strength she showcased during the WandaVision TV series. At the conclusion of this show, she is able to fully embrace her persona as the Scarlet Witch using her chaos magic to take out Agatha Harkness while still maintaining her spell over Westview so that her children and Vision may remain alive.

In the post-credits, we are shown Wanda reading through the Darkhold, a demonic book of magic she acquired in the show, and with this, we can only expect her to be even more powerful when she returns in Dr Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness.

Mark Hamill Praises Harrison Ford On Social Media, Just Because

Sometimes you’ve just got to share the love for one of your oldest friends, you know. And when you’re Mark Hamill and you’re sharing the love for Harrison Ford, it’s a sure thing that you’re going to go viral. That’s what happened this week as the Star Wars legend dedicated a tweet to praising his fellow Star Wars legend, for no reason other than Ford is and continues to be an icon.

Hamill took to Twitter recently to post a shout-out to his old pal Ford, just because he felt like it, and the internet loved it. “SHOUT OUT to #HarrisonFord for no particular reason, other than he is the one and only #HarrisonFord,” Hamill wrote in his tweet, as well as sharing four images from over the years – the first depicts Ford in recent times, the second is a still of Han Solo, the third is a publicity photo from Ford’s younger days and the last is a touching pic of the two friends hanging out.

Both Hamill and Ford reprised their roles as Luke Skywalker and Han for Disney’s sequel trilogy, but Hamill has long maintained that he wishes they got to share some scenes together. While Hamill made a shock return to the galaxy far, far away in The Mandalorian‘s season 2 finale, we’re pretty 1sure that we’ve seen the last of Ford in the franchise.

We haven’t seen the last of him in his other most famous role, though. The 79-year-old actor is currently in the UK shooting Indiana Jones 5, which is confirmed to be his final time playing the whip-wielding archaeologist. Logan director James Mangold is taking the reins from Steven Spielberg, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen co-starring. It hits cinemas in just over a year’s time on July 28th, 2022. Mark Hamill, meanwhile, can be heard as Skeletor in Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation animated series from July 23rd 2021.

Twilight Fans Freaking Out Over The Franchise Being Added To Netflix

Are we set for The Twilight Saga to experience a massive resurgence in popularity? Looking at both the social media reactions and most-watched chart since the five-film series was added to Netflix on Friday, it certainly looks that way, which is a terrifying prospect for the folks who remember the absolute anarchy and mayhem the Twihards generated at the brand’s cultural zenith.

Of course, it’s been thirteen years since the first installment hit theaters and kickstarted a global phenomenon, so even the younger members of the original fandom will be staring their late 20s right in the face, so perhaps they’ve become a little more reserved over the years. Then again, looking at the unbridled joy that greeted Stephenie Meyer announcing new book Midnight Sun last year, that might not be the case.

Understandably, many folks have seen their dormant love of Twilight reignited since the entirety of the franchise was thrust upon the platform’s unsuspecting and unprepared subscribers a couple of days ago, and you can check out some of the responses below.

Twilight

If you weren’t there the first time around, then it’s hard to overstate the rabid and fanatical dedication that The Twilight Saga fostered among its audience, with kids and Karens alike ready to throw hands depending on whether you were Team Edward of Team Jacob, while haunting CGI baby Renesmee still remains the stuff of nightmares.

Looking at the social media buzz, it would appear as though The Twilight Saga is back, baby. Whether or not that’s a good thing is entirely dependent on your personal preference, but it might be a while before Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and both parts of Breaking Dawn come down from the Netflix Top 10.

A Robin Williams Classic Hits Disney Plus Next Month

The timing for Disney purchasing Fox worked out pretty well for the Mouse House, seeing as it coincided with both the launch of an in-house streaming service and the company increasing their stake in Hulu, instantly opening up both content libraries to hundreds upon hundreds of valuable new additions.

It’s been a long time coming, but Robin Williams classic Mrs. Doubtfire is finally coming to Disney Plus next month, and you can guarantee there’s going to be a huge volume of subscribers eager to revisit the family comedy, regardless of how many times they’ve seen it already.

The legendary comedian snagged a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his barnstorming dual performance, while the movie itself landed the Best Picture trophy in the same category. Not only that, but it pulled in a whopping $441 million at the box office on a $25 million budget, going down as the second-biggest hit of 1993 behind Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park.

Mrs. Doubtfire

Mrs. Doubtfire found itself back in the online discourse earlier this year when rumors began making the rounds that an NC-17 cut of the movie existed, and while that was swiftly debunked by director Chris Columbus, he did admit that Williams improvised so much material that the editing team could have realistically cobbled together what would no doubt have been an uproarious R-rated version.

Maybe the impending Disney Plus release on August 6th will reignite calls to see Euphegenia Doubtfire unleash a foul-mouthed tirade or two, especially when fan campaigns are more prevalent than ever these days, even if the majority of them don’t really end up accomplishing much in the long run. Either way, it’s set to be another valuable addition to the platform’s library.

A Jim Carrey Classic Is Finding New Life On Streaming

Overnight stardom isn’t really a thing in Hollywood, when the vast majority of actors tend to have been working for years if not decades before they finally catch their shot at glory, but Jim Carrey‘s 1994 has to go down as one of the biggest breakout periods for any performer of the modern era.

The funnyman made his screen debut in 1980, but was still a relative unknown until Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber landed in theaters within ten months of each other. All three hit big at the box office and saw audiences quoting a ton of memorable lines, and just like that, Carrey was now one of the most recognizable and popular stars in the entire industry.

the mask

Of the three, The Mask fared best from both a critical and commercial perspective, while it also launched the career of future A-lister Cameron Diaz for good measure. A frenetic, hilarious, inventive and massively entertaining showcase for the leading man’s boundless energy and natural charisma, the smartest move the project made was deviating far away from the comic book source material, which is much darker in tone than Chuck Russell’s vibrant effort.

The Mask currently ranks as one of the most-watched titles on Hulu, and even reached as high as fourth position over the weekend. Sequel Son of the Mask may be rightly lauded as one of the worst movies ever made, but even such an awful follow up can’t do anything to detract from the quality of the original. There’s been increased chatter over the last year or so that Carrey is seriously entertaining the prospect of returning as Stanley Ipkiss, but we’ll just have to wait and see how those rumors pan out.

LeBron James Responds To Space Jam: A New Legacy Haters

For the most part, Warner Bros. releasing the entire 2021 slate of movies on HBO Max the same day they hit theaters hasn’t had a noticeable effect on box office takings, at least when the industry was caught in the worst throes of the pandemic. Wonder Woman 1984, The Little Things, Tom & Jerry, Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It all managed to open at number one, and it looks like we’ll be adding Space Jam: A New Legacy to that list.

In fact, the long-awaited sequel to the beloved 1996 original is on its way to scoring one of the biggest three-day debuts since COVID-19 first brought business to its knees sixteen months ago, with LeBron James’ trip to the ServerVerse set to dethrone Black Widow after a single weekend and take the top spot with a fairly robust $32 million debut frame.

As you may have noticed, critics haven’t been too kind towards A New Legacy, and even fans who loved the first film have been quick to blast the shameless marketing exercise masquerading as a big budget family-friendly blockbuster. Despite the tepid reviews and string of minor controversies that dogged the movie in the buildup to release, James has taken to social media and celebrated Space Jam 2 heading straight to the top of the box office, as you can see below.

As history has shown an all too regular basis, the best movies aren’t necessarily the ones that make the most money, but as the follow up to a generational classic that boasted a globally famous star in the lead role and a bevvy of high profile IP to reference, there was no other outcome than Space Jam: A New Legacy hitting it big this weekend.

4 Original Horror Movies Are Dominating Netflix Today

We might be in the middle of July, where audiences typically flock to the multiplex to catch the latest big budget effects-driven blockbusters, which is very much still the case looking at the healthy box office returns posted by the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Widow and Space Jam: A New Legacy, but Netflix subscribers have been hedging their bets on horror.

Four of the ten most-watched titles on the platform are designed with the sole intention of scaring people out of their seats, proving that the genre is a winner all year round, not just during spooky season. Admittedly, 75% of the quartet is made up of the Fear Street trilogy, but it’s still undeniably impressive that the first and second chapters are still hanging on to such high positions having been released three and two weeks ago, respectively.

Sadie Sink Fear Street 1978 Clip

Unsurprisingly, Part Three: 1666 is currently sitting pretty in first position, but low budget Italian chiller A Classic Horror Story has turned out to be the platform’s latest unexpected foreign-language hit. The high concept horror follows five friends on a road trip, but their camper crashes into a tree. Once they regain their bearings, the road is gone and an impenetrable forest surrounds them, with a foreboding wooden house looming.

Unlike the Fear Street trilogy, which is currently riding a wave of consistent critical acclaim, A Classic Horror Movie hasn’t been as warmly embraced by critics. The film from co-directors Roberto De Feo and Paolo Strippoli holds a middling Rotten Tomatoes score of 43%, with audiences rating it even lower at 36%. That hasn’t made much of an impact, though, with four in-house scary movies posting seriously strong showings on Netflix.
