Star Wars Actress Kelly Marie Tran Would Love To Join The MCU

For whatever reason, Kelly Marie Tran‘s Rose Tico turned out to be one of the most polarizing characters across the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. After being given a prominent role in The Last Jedi, the actress faced a huge volume of vitriol and backlash online despite doing nothing more than reading the lines on the script she was given, and things got so bad she left social media altogether.

Several of her co-stars publicly blasted the so-called ‘fans’ for throwing such negativity in the direction of a young woman who’d just scored the biggest role of her career, although Tran had just as many supporters as she did detractors. Rose’s screentime in The Rise of Skywalker was minimal at best, despite the fact she was featured prominently in several of the trailer’s money shots, but Tran has since revealed she doesn’t have any regrets.

If anything, she’s going from strength to strength having lent her vocal talents to animated hits The Croods: A New Age and Raya and the Last Dragon, which saw her introduced to acclaimed independent filmmaker Carlos López Estrada, who broke out with the acclaimed Blindspotting before working on Disney projects Frozen II, Raya and Encanto.

Tran recently boarded Estrada’s latest live-action effort Summertime as an executive producer, and in a new interview he jumped right in and answered the question on Tran’s behalf when she was asked if joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe was something that would interest her int he future.

“I’m going to answer for her and say I hope she’s part of it! For me, as a director, I have been very inspired by all the movies and people I’ve gotten a chance to work with, including the Summertime poets and Kelly. I will do everything within my power to continue working on projects that I can be equally as inspired by whether it’s Summertime 2: The Return of Summertime or a Marvel thing, I think I’m just going to have to follow my gut and try to surround myself with people I find as inspiring as Kelly Marie Tran.”

Obviously, not many rising or established talents have turned down the advances of Kevin Feige’s all-conquering outfit, but having done plenty of work for Disney in the past, Kelly Marie Tran is well-placed to join another of the Mouse House’s biggest brands one day.

Robert Pattinson Reportedly Wants No Comedy In His Batman Movies

During a long and illustrious career across all forms of live-action, animated and print media, Batman has been called many things, but hilarious is very rarely one of them.

Adam West’s 1960s TV series can generate plenty of mirth, but it was always more of a kitsch product of the time rather than an out-and-out comedy, while Joel Schumacher’s approach saw Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Carrey throw out a rapid-fire succession of puns while Val Kilmer and George Clooney dropped more than a few thuddingly bad one-liners.

Not every major comic book property has to adopt the tried and trusted Marvel Cinematic Universe formula for peppering almost every scene with a pithy quip or two, with insider Daniel Richtman now intimating that Robert Pattinson doesn’t want any comedy whatsoever throughout his tenure as Matt Reeves’ rebooted Dark Knight.

Of course, the former Twilight star didn’t write the script and he’s not the one calling the shots, so he’s hardly in charge of the words coming out of his mouth onscreen. That being said, there’s been a near-constant stream of rumor and speculation that he’s either pushing for increased creative control in the future or already got it a long time ago, so he might well end up having a much bigger say in the creative direction of The Batman than other contracted talents to have suited up for superhero epics.

Last summer’s trailer hardly painted The Batman as a barrel of laughs, but it’s a difficult balance to strike between treating the material with the utmost seriousness and respect without sucking every ounce of fun out of it, something that we hope Pattinson and Reeves have managed to pull off with aplomb.

Black Widow On Track To Beat Fast & Furious 9’s Box Office Records

In just three days, Black Widow will finally arrive to kick off the theatrical side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Four, over a year later than intended. As the most lucrative franchise in the history of cinema returns to the big screen for the first time since the summer of 2019, it’s long been predicted that all pandemic-era box office benchmarks will fall to Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff.

However, Vin Diesel and the Fast & Furious crew might have something to say about that. Not only did the recent ninth installment smash the domestic opening weekend record thanks to a debut in excess of $70 million, but it’s also raced to over $125 million in less than two weeks, and only a few days ago became the first Hollywood blockbuster since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to reach $500 million globally.

A few weeks ago, Black Widow was said to be tracking for a three-day bow in the $90 million range, and with the movie’s premiere imminent, those projections haven’t changed much at all. The earliest tracking pegged Cate Shortland’s espionage thriller somewhere around $65 million, but as the industry continues to rebound, those figures have been revised to somewhere closer to $80-90 million.

That would be even more impressive when you consider Black Widow is also available to purchase through Disney Plus Premier Access from day one, and previous hybrid titles like Raya and the Last Dragon, Mulan and Cruella didn’t make a major splash at the box office. Then again, this is the MCU we’re talking about, which operates at a different standard to any other brand, so if it performs well enough internationally then F9‘s half-billion dollar tally is a completely attainable goal.

The DCEU’s Supergirl Will Reportedly Be Very Dark

Looking at the recent and upcoming roster of upcoming DCEU projects, you’d be forgiven for that the dark and dingy aesthetic of the SnyderVerse was being laid to rest once and for all, but insider Daniel Richtman claims that might not be the case in regards to Sasha Calle’s Supergirl, who will make her franchise debut next year in The Flash.

Zack Snyder’s relentlessly grim and self-serious time at the helm continues to divide opinion to this day, but it certainly looked as though the shared superhero series may have turned a corner. James Wan’s Aquaman was big dumb fun, while David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! never took itself too seriously. On top of that, Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey was an irreverent R-rated romp, Wonder Woman 1984 leaned into the period trappings and The Suicide Squad has let James Gunn well and truly off the leash.

However, Richtman puts forth that Calle’s Supergirl will have a troubled past after being captured by humans, then finding herself tortured and experimented on. While this does fit with recent rumors that claimed her backstory would be similar to that of Flashpoint Superman, who was kept in an underground bunker by the government after crash-landing into Metropolis instead of Smallville, we still don’t know for sure which version of the Kryptonain superhero Calle is actually playing.

Andy Muschietti’s comic book blockbuster has been inspired by Flashpoint since it was first announced in October 2014, so several of those aforementioned pieces do fit together. For now, though, Warner Bros. are keeping plot details firmly under wraps, so it could be a long time yet before we find out whether or not Supergirl is getting a darker spin.

3 Benedict Cumberbatch Movies Are Blowing Up On Netflix

Looking back, was The Hobbit trilogy really such a great idea? An additional $2.9 billion in box office takings would certainly say yes, and there’s a whole lot of fans out there who got a real kick out of returning to Middle-earth, but there were just as many left crushingly disappointed by Peter Jackson’s second stab at the J.R.R. Tolkien mythology.

The high frame rate was a very poor decision in hindsight, one that’s since been rectified on the various home video and streaming releases, and the decision to stretch the slim source material into three epic blockbusters instead of two when Jackson was in the middle of production is directly responsible for the frequently sluggish pace. The reliance on CGI over practical effects was also incredibly detrimental to the levels of immersion, as the cast of characters ran around against obviously digital backdrops and poorly-rendered enemies.

The Hobbit

Of course, there’s still plenty of enjoyment to be found, and the performances are all top notch across the board, with particularly high praise earned by Martin Freeman’s out of his depth Bilbo Baggins and Ian McKellen slipping back into the robes of Gandalf like he’d never been away, as well as a special mention for Benedict Cumberbatch evidently having a whale of a time chewing on the scenery as the voice and performance capture of Smaug.

Netflix subscribers have been revisiting The Hobbit in their droves across the last few days, with all three installments among the 25 most-watched titles in the platform. Audiences have evidently decided to get through them one at a time instead of a nine-hour binge, though, with An Unexpected Journey currently sitting in seventh position, with The Desolation of Smaug in 20th and The Battle of the Five Armies just two places behind.

A Forgotten Seth Rogen Movie Is Finding New Life On Netflix

Things could have turned out very differently for Jack Black had he decided to follow in the family business, with both of his parents being satellite engineers, and his mother Judith Love Cohen worked on the Hubble Space Telescope and the Apollo Space Program. In fact, his brother is also a computer engineer with a long history of developing technology for the military, whereas young Jack went on to lend his boisterous enthusiasm to a string of broad comedies and family films, including Netflix success Kung Fu Panda 3.

Since being added to the library at the beginning of the month, the animated threequel has ascended as high as fourth position on the most-watched list around the world, even if the franchise has itself has largely been forgotten about. Which is a strange decision the part of DreamWorks when Kung Fu Panda has gone on to earn $1.8 billion at the box office and spawn a multimedia franchise of TV shows, short films, video games and more.

Kung Fu Panda 2

A trio of eminently entertaining martial arts adventures with a dysfunctional band of anthropomorphized animals doing battle to save China, the series did nonetheless fall into a familiar DreamWorks pitfall of paying what would’ve no doubt been top dollar for an A-list voice cast, only to give them very little to do in the grand scheme of things.

Among the Kung Fu Panda alumni to have contributed almost nothing memorable or of note are Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Jean-Claude Van Damme and even Al Roker for whatever reason. That being said, esteemed veterans Dustin Hoffman, James Hong, Ian McShane and Gary Oldman brought their animated A-game, while Black never gave anything less than 100% as Po.

Hugh Jackman Teases Wolverine’s Return In MCU With Cryptic Photos

The talk of Hugh Jackman making a comeback as Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t going to go away until the moment a new actor is announced to be inheriting the role whenever the next X-Men reboot plunges headfirst into active development, if that’s even the direction things are planning to head.

There’s every chance Kevin Feige could leave the mutton-chopped mutant out entirely to put some distance between Jackman’s iconic portrayal and his potential successor, because following in such massive footsteps is a daunting and arguably unwinnable proposition. Of course, if the 52 year-old were to dust off the claws one more time, then Deadpool 3 feels like the most likely option given his long-running rivalry with Ryan Reynolds and the plans to have them team up in Fox’s version of the project, but it’s entirely speculative for now.

However, Jackman recently took to social media and posted a pair of cryptic images. One of them was a piece of minimalistic fan art showcasing Wolverine’s adamantium appendages, with the other showing him arm-in-arm with Marvel Studios boss Feige, which you can check out below.

Naturally, this has sent the internet into a tizzy, with tons of folks believing that he’s teasing an MCU return, but it may just be a tribute of sorts to the late Richard Donner, who passed away yesterday. The legendary filmmaker behind The Omen, Superman, The Goonies and Lethal Weapon was an executive producer on Bryan Singer’s X-Men, which marked Feige’s first-ever feature film credit.

Jackman has even revealed in the past that when he flew in to join the cast having signed on as Wolverine two weeks after filming had started, it was young associate producer Feige who picked him up from the airport, so the shared Donner connection could very well be the reason behind his post. Or, you know, perhaps there’s more to it than that…
